It’s Paul Lambert’s birthday today….!!! on 13:24 - Aug 7 with 2795 views | HighgateBlue | He inherited a team in freefall from our worst ever manager bar none, was given no budget (partly because his predecessor was given a few quid for the first time since Keane), achieved a better win percentage than Cook (who seems to be revered), despite some of his time coming in a higher division, correctly identified that the structure of the club needed sorting, and had the courage to say it. Sure, his time ended in failure and was far from a success. The same can be said of many players. Why diarise significant dates in such people's lives in order to throw stones? What gem of wisdom will we have on the anniversary of Mick's confirmation? Marcus Evans' wedding anniversary? Having said all that, he doesn't need presents given the wages the club will still be paying him until 2025. That decision was not the club's finest hour.

He was dealt a bad hand, yet still managed to play them terribly. Got us relegated without a fight, marooned us in the third division, picked fights with fans and had us playing some woeful football. The fact that PHIL has upvoted this speaks volumes, given he normally stays out of stuff like this. [Post edited 7 Aug 2024 17:08]

‘In freefall’ We were 5 points adrift of safety. He came in and played an horrific style of play not suited for a relation battle.

You can be in freefall and not yet have hit the ground. We had won 1 game in 16 immediately prior to Lambert starting. If that is not freefall then what on earth is? I find it odd that the guy gets so much abuse when his record was better than Cook's or Hurst's, that's all. We are on the crest of a wave at the start of a Premier League season. I understand that some people can't cope without daily def info on transfers, but why on earth dig up Lambert's corpse just to give it a slap?

Club spent very significantly on loanees in his first January, but I do agree the claim we were relegated without a whimper is a bit of a rewrite of history. More than often we played well but couldn't turn performances into wins. Club won't still be paying him, there will have been break clauses, there always are.

I don't have a little notebook of people whose opinions I disagree with in order to dig up past grievances. But whenever there is a news story regarding Cook there is always a range of opinions about him, some of which are pretty glowing. It is nice to have a smiley manager, but Cook's record was worse than Lambert's. Lambert was a failure, no doubt about it, of course, but I just don't understand what anyone gains from being unnecessarily mean to one in particular out of a long list of failed Ipswich managers from the wilderness years.
