To any fans of Tolkien who has warched Rings of Power. 04:28 - Oct 8 with 2958 views | Mercian | I think it is terrible and an insult to the author. The late Christopher Tolkien who was very protective of his father's work would not have allowed it to go ahead. He had to have his arm twisted to allow The Lord of the Rings trilogy to go ahead because of the changes needed to convert book to screen. Does anyone have any thoughts on it? To any fans of Tolkien who has warched Rings of Power. on 07:46 - Oct 8 with 2428 views | TractorWood | Am trudging through season 2. It's pretty terrible. Horrendous pacing, unfollowable stories all running concurrently, plot inconsistencies. I recently rewatched the trilogy for comparison and it's absolutely incredible. Hasn't aged much either as you'd imagine.

To any fans of Tolkien who has warched Rings of Power. on 07:49 - Oct 8 with 2424 views | Steve_M | I watched the first series thinking it might get better but, despite a few decent bits of plot (the significance of the broken sword) nothing made me have any desire to watch the second series. General feedback is, rather like yours, that it is an enormous disappointment and perhaps worse than the first one.

To any fans of Tolkien who has warched Rings of Power. on 08:51 - Oct 8 with 2297 views | ElephantintheRoom | Cant be bothered with the second series as the first was so dire. Something similar is happening with Game of Thrones with a tedious reimagining of House Targaryen I’m no fan of ever expanding children’s books - but I doubt the upcoming TV version of Harry Potter will work either.

To any fans of Tolkien who has warched Rings of Power. on 08:55 - Oct 8 with 2284 views | DanTheMan | I might watch it at some point, but I've been put off based on other people's opinions. It's hard to know with some of the criticism as it was wrapped up in some culture war nonsense but even people who don't care about that don't have much good to say about it. I had heard season 2 was a bit better. Much like anything Discworld, it seems very hard to translate to TV or film.

I think House of the Dragon is good. Better than the later seasons of Game of Thrones when JRRM's material ran out and he stopped being an executive producer.

At best.....alright and mildly diverting. When an actual story emerges there's some fun stuff but it could have done with some serious editing. [Post edited 8 Oct 2024 9:43]

It is tedious. About 4 episodes of how the rings got created.

To any fans of Tolkien who has warched Rings of Power. on 10:09 - Oct 8 with 2031 views | mutters | As others on this thread, am a bit Tolkien fan. I've seen the Rings of Power slightly differently as others. The first series was a slow burner, basically scene setting. The second series has definitely picked up the pace and the last few episodes I thought were really enjoyable. When Amazon won the rights to make this they had to commit to making at least 5 series, so they were always going to take their time. There are lots of good things in here but also a lot of frustration. As somebody who likes most things Tolkien, it's been interesting to see that Universe expanded, see more characters, more stories bought to life. They have touched on parts of the lore that haven't been mentioned before and so to see that played out on the screen is good imo. As much as Tolkien wrote, there is obviously gaps and this is where the TV studios have a bit more of a freehand to fill in the gaps. Some has been good, some not so. My frustration lies in how they have manipulated the timeline on telling these stories. I am not going to talk about the story as some won't have finished it, but if you have read Tolkien in detail then something's that happen in the book are much more spaced out there than Amazon have done. They changed some of the timeline to suit their storytelling, which to a degree is ok but for a purest it's a bit poor. Friends of mine who haven't ever read Tolkien have really enjoyed it, though have said it can be a bit slow going. As I said to them, the books can be the same at times, as Tolkien loved going into great detail. Overall the series is on an upward trend imo, and am looking forward to series 3 much more than I was for series 2.

Regardless of it doing Tolkien a grave injustice its just terrible, dull viewing. One thing I would say is that we have learnt some thing new about elves from.it. we already knew that they were powerful and crafty folk, capable of creating potent artifacts. Now we know they have terrible hairdressers.

Some of the characters were good. The best I think is Adar who was not Tolkien's creation. Sauron was good throughout. Other good characters were Elendil, Pharazon, Durin the younger and his misses and Elrond grew on me. Galadriel is downright awful. She was possibly the wisest and most level headed of all Tolkien's characters not the petulant vengeful 5000 year old woman-child that was portrayed on the show. [Post edited 8 Oct 2024 11:30]

To any fans of Tolkien who has warched Rings of Power. on 12:46 - Oct 8 with 1825 views | J2BLUE | Mixed feelings. It's been pretty slow and the build up to something happening has been painful. The subplots with the Harfoots couldn't be more boring. They have made Galadriel look like some naive teenage girl who willingly walks into any trap without thinking. The Numenor stuff was also pretty slow. If you have read The Martian with the dull repetitive plot this is kind of the same. With that said...it's an investment for future seasons IMO. I probably wouldn't bother with it until just before season three comes out because, in theory, it's all about to kick off.

Yes, some characters are much more appealing than others! The whole Númenor scenes I found really up and down. From reading Tolkien I remember where that city is going to end up but some of the subplots didn't grab me. The halffoots I guess are a nod to the hobbits origins but I never really connected with them. Galadriel I guess is still young here, in elvish terms anyway, so maybe with age comes wisdom? I thought Elrond was a bell end in the first series but definitely grew on me in the second. As a side note, the young girl that plays Galadriel in the first episode is my friends niece!

The two hacks they've got as showrunners couldn't write a decent show if their lives depended on it. It's about to be kicked off Amazon, rather than kick off, they spend almost as much per episode as Peter Jackson had to film all of Fellowship. Bezos might not care about losing so much money on it, but Amazon could make multiple new shows that people might actually want to watch and enjoy paying to watch than this dumpster fire.

Isn't Bezos a huge LOTR fan? Sounds like it's his personal project.

To any fans of Tolkien who has warched Rings of Power. on 16:45 - Oct 8 with 1517 views | SouperJim | As a fan, I could just about swallow what Peter Jackson came up with and enjoy it for what it was, but I managed 2 episodes of RoP. It's not Tolkien. The only adaptation of any of his work that I really rate, is the 13 episode BBC radio version of LoTR. That's a cracker and well worth a listen for anyone who hasn't.

Be interested in where you heard that rumour? It was pretty clear from the terms of the Tolkien estate that Amazon has to commit to a minimum of five seasons for them to get the rights to make this. I would be surprised if they break that agreement. Also as much as some moan about it, it is still rated reasonably. Averaging about 7/10 on the sites I looked at.
