Let's be honest, no defender does well in that 15 minute spell, diop was being pulled all over the place as our midfield had gone to pot, with diop out of line, Greaves was having to try and help davis out whilst looking after the gaps left by diop whilst trying to figure out which ridiculous pass Fernandes was going to make next
Honestly.. If utd did not have Fernandes, we'd have won that game. When we lost our shape, he began to shine, we kept him at bay in the first half, obv apart from the goal but that was just a freak incident for nunez

I think we need a mobile and agile LCB who can cover wide areas and mop up behind Diop when he gets sucked in and misses his challenge (which he does a couple of times a game). Or slot in alongside O’Shea if GON prefers him over Diop.
I was going to suggest an ambitious signing like Belgium’s Arthur Theate, as he was available, but has just joined Bologna on loan. That’s the calibre we should be going for (another Enciso, Palacios statement type signing).
Someone like him though. Athletic, aggressive, good top league experience. Jean-Clair Todibo Could have been another one who was available; but he’s reportedly tying up a loan away from West Ham.
The players are out there, but the lack of any activity or links suggests we’re not looking to do anything. Which I find surprising. Diop/O’Shea/Greaves/ Kipre looks too light on quality for my liking, especially given our RB weakness and wish to get Leif up the pitch. [Post edited 31 Aug 9:47]

He was superb in the first game and had a really unfortunate 15 mins against a top team and the best player in the prem last season. Midfield also disintegrated giving the defence no cover. We write off last night as an unfortunate lesson about what can happen sometimes against a top prem team and move on. Beating teams like Sunderland is how we stay up this season, not winning away at utd. Dropping him after that would be wildly unfair and would destroy his confidence long term. Zero chance GON does that. | | | |

I’d be pretty cheesed off having had that goal given against me and been under immense pressure for best part of 45 mins. Defence seem to be taking a lot of stick but seemed obvious to me they were left very exposed by the midfield when our moves broke down halfway up the pitch.

He’s dealt with many tough moments before, he’s an experienced footballer. Added to that, the guys will around him and remind him he’s a top player.
So shouldn’t be dropped for that reason.

Spot on about Diop. He was all over the place but nowhere to be seen when the first and fifth went in. At least Greaves was killing himself to get back when he brought Cunha down for the penalty and he was unlucky in attempting to hack clear the 5rh. Diop's positioning was very suspect IMHO. |  |

Barring three incidents (the OG, the pen and being wrong-footed by Fernandes - two of which he could do very little about), I thought he had a good game and was very solid for that first hour.
Unfortunately, all three resulted in goals, but that is, similar to a goalkeeper, the life of a centre-back. Every mistake risks immediately conceding. |  |

It’s a tough day on greaves. But defending in that weather with that quality of movement and balls pinged all over the place is impossible / greaves was the unfortunate one to have been closest to the ball or action - positive or negative for throughout most of the game - I dont think that game and those set of circumstances will happen again all season,
I honestly dont - hind sight is should have brought extra midfield cover in as that’s where you will always be exposed against manu but do we really want to play like
hull - I know I don’t so have no issues with the result of how we tried playing.
One thing is for sure we deffo need another striker and right winger as massive drop in quality as soon as the subs are brought on. That and I am praying enciso stays fit for the whole or majority of the season as he is by far the best player we have brought in for some time. He is unplayable when he gets going even though still some times rough round the edges and some times takes on too much but when you are that good it is easy to see why. | | | |

Diop seems to want to step up a lot and has then been noticeably caught out positionally a few times. Hopefully it’s all stuff that can be tweaked on the training pitch. | |
