Using prisoners to dig the hole as a matter of routine.....

Not a pandemic thing though. Just a standard modern developed city mass grave.

Considering we now have the highest daily death rate for a European Country.... Our slow pathetic response is proving calamitous and devastating at the same time. Nevermind as long as all the ignorant c..ts are enjoying a nice cream on the beach while poor families suffer the hideous consequences. Hope the ice cream man feels good about his profits at the expense of blood. F..k the economy.

Erm I think you’ll find France still has a higher death rate than we do so no we don’t have the highest daily death rate for a European country

Thanks for this. It’s a perfect example of how a picture can be used to tell a story that isn’t necessarily the whole truth. The way it was presented in our media, I thought it was just being used for massed C-19 burials because so many people had sadly lost their lives.

On the subject of journalism there is a bit of a parallel with the Q&A on the daily briefing. While I find these to an extent informative, the journalist questions and media spin put on the answers are to me mostly appalling. Their aim seems to be to trick the presenters into saying something they can use to justify a story they’ve already written.

Highest daily death rate - yesterday’s daily figure was higher than what both Italy and Spain reported at the peak (assuming that - hopefully - the peak has passed for both). Of course we have to be careful about how many of those are historical figures only released yesterday but had passed before though I presume Italy and Spain have the same issue.

Still think it is bad to report it as if all these deaths are happening on the same day.

Blimey.

"Hart Island...has been used for more than 150 years as a place to bury the city's unidentified or unclaimed dead.."

So far so good, albeit very sad and you'd think the memory of these people would be treated with a bit more dignity. But needs must I suppose.

But then:

"...or those whose families can't pay for a burial."

WTAF?

I don't really care about what happens to me when I die. But the state of that mass grave and island!?? There's no pretence that this is the cheapest alternative.

I don't know about unclaimed by family and loved ones, these bodies look unclaimed by society.

You also have to remember our population is 10% larger than Italy and an even greater percentage than Spain. We also have a population density in excess of those countries. If you want an example of a country with a high death rate that seems to have escaped most comment look at Belgium. Currently 290 deaths per million of pop, while ours is 132. For context Spain and Italy are 350 and 312, the USA is 57.
