Another mistake by Evans’ Burley was on the radio the other day saying McGoldrick would’ve stayed had been have been offered something and probably not left to the last minute!

Didn't realise Burley was McG's agent. Why would he have signed a new contract here when Sheffield United were clearly interested?

Indeed, because that’s what he was here! Once he went to Sheffield he had a miraculous recovery.

Almost as if he'd moved to somewhere where they weren't cutting corners and penny pinching with their rehab and sports science.

Yep at least some folks know what they are talking about. His contract ended and he was released. Hurst went out and got League One players and... we ended up in League One. At least Cook looks decent. https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town/ipswich-town-fans-back-decision-to-rel

If Didz had actually been on a budget sheet given to Hurst, he’d have sold him anyway.

David McGoldrick Premier League match winner released by Ipswich Town on 20:48 - Mar 3 with 2833 views | Nthsuffolkblue | It was clear that McGoldrick was our most talented player and had the potential to play at the top level. It was also clear that the pitch time he was getting with us did not make giving him a contract here in the hope he would get consistently fit was worthwhile. At the time (as the article linked above clearly states), virtually all fans thought it was the right decision. As also pointed out, even Sheffield United were not prepared to simply take a punt on him with his injury record. Instead they got him training with them and proving his fitness before signing him up.

Add in a proper football club that had ambition, was properly run with standards and all of a sudden Lazarus rose and became virtually an ever present. No surprise.

Actually, I think it was that he wasn't an ever-present was a big factor in his lack of injury issues. If you look at how he was played with the Blades, certainly when he first went there, he was given 60, 70 minutes on the Saturday, would be a sub on the Tuesday and get 20 minutes. Here he'd be out for five months, get fit and be given 90 minutes followed by another 90 minutes and another.

McGoldrick going in isolation wouldn't have been such a problem if we hadn't also let Waghorn, Garner and Webster go. We also didn't go and get a quality loanee, like Fraser, Lawrence or to a less extent Celina as we did in previous seasons. Didn't Hurst also fall out with Bart? [Post edited 4 Mar 2021 0:41]

I’m sure he would’ve stayed with an arm round his shoulder and a new contract under his nose to sign, but equally I didn’t see many people at the time saying it was the wrong thing to do in letting him go. I think everyone knew his quality but he was a top earner and had struggled for fitness. Easy to look back in hindsight but in isolation I think him leaving was probably OK if his salary was reinvested in 1 or 2 players, and not followed quite quickly by Waghorn, Webster & Garner.
