Lambert and Gill got Town to within one point of the top six... 15:09 - Mar 20 with 5499 views | pointofblue | Now we’re dropping back it’s all the players fault? No blame for Cook for being so rigid on his thinking he can’t try a tactic which might work for us with the players who we have available?

What formation suits these players? Lets not forget Lambert chopped and changed formation and players last season, and we fell away quickly.

It may have brought him success elsewhere but we do not have the players to suit it. He may have had success elsewhere with it but four points out of five here.

We either want a manager for the long term or we don’t. If we do, then he needs to build his philosophy from day one not coach them one way for a couple of months and then do an about turn in the summer. If the players aren’t up to it (and all evidence suggests many aren’t) then he’s finding out now and can fix it going forwards.

We do not score enough, ergo we need two up front. With Matheson and Kenlock we might be able to get a wing back system to work with three at the back. I understand the calls for 4-4-2 but we’re lightweight enough as it is without reducing our numbers in the middle. Our wide attacking players generally don’t provide enough so wouldn’t be missed. 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 is hardly working.

He's got a bit now for the next week, but even then it's ridiculous to be judging him so quickly. You're the worst kind of modern football fan. Zero patience.

One issue is despite having a gazillion midfielders in the squad you can't get a balanced midfield out of them. Downes being injured is a big blow, need some real experienced leaders in the middle. Think that would make a big difference straight away. [Post edited 20 Mar 2021 15:37]

And if he wants to play that way he'll know for definite in a couple more games which players to keep and which can go.

So what more can he do with the time he has on the training ground then? Faffing around trying to find a formation that suits these gutless tw@ts? Or how about we let him lay the foundations and philosophy and get to the summer, promotion or no promotion, to give this place a right good seeing over.

Will the 'in or out' thing in football last forever? Bloody hope not. Any criticism of a manager and you're an outer and any defence of them you're an inner.

The difference being Lambert rightly got stick for it. All of a sudden Paul Cook doing the exact same thing and improving nothing deserves nothing but admiration.

Well yes. Because lambert was here 2.5 years. Had a hand in the recruitment of players and had a hand in how the players mentalities are. PC hasnt even had a full training week yet.

But my fear is this is EXACTLY what happened with Lambert. He deserves time, he needs a transfer window, he needs an opportunity to train, things will change. There’s a balance between, yes, giving managers that opportunity but also not giving them a free ride when we’re not hitting the heights we should be. Are you really saying we have a worse squad than Gillingham? When Lambert left we were above them.

Lambert and Gill got Town to within one point of the top six... on 15:31 - Mar 20 with 2557 views | tractorboy1978 | In 7 seasons Cook has: Won L2 with Chesterfield, followed by finishing 6th in L1 the following season Play-offs with Portsmouth followed by winning the L2 title Won the L1 title with Wigan Kept Wigan up in the Championship Had Wigan comfortably mid table with automatic promotion form in the games post COVID All of this playing a 4-2-3-1. It's a formula that has been hugely successful for him and he needs to know which of these can play/do as he wants. But no, let's build around a group of players that have been largely poor regardless of formation for nearly 3 seasons now.

So would you sack him? Tell him playoffs this season or he’s out? These are not his players. There will be some who want away, others that know they’re gone anyway, some ‘trying it on’ just as a few did when Bobby Robson started, some desperate to do better and a load of loanees getting fit for their real clubs. Cook’s test is next season.

No, but don’t just accept this season dying a death. We did that in 18/19 and the club has never recovered. Don’t be happy with anything but the play offs this season and, yes, that will mean more pressure on Cook and the players to deliver next year. I’m simply saying, considering where we were in the table, this season should not be treated as a write off.

Difference is though we arent in a position where we are facing relegation. Lambert also had 31 games. Training and a transfer window. And yes I'm still shocked he got as much support. However. This situ is nowhere near the same and thays why PC imo shouldn't be questioned.

Lambert not being sacked at least prior to the January transfer window baffles me even now. At the very least he should have gone after Portsmouth at home where it became obvious we couldn’t beat our promotion rivals. Does it say how bad this division is that we’re so apparently poor in all positions yet still in touching place of the play offs? And yet we don’t have the ability to take advantage of this?
