Beating Bayern Munich while participating in the UEFA Cup.

Poll: If KM goes now, will you applaud him when he returns with his new club?

Well now I feel an idiot for missing such an obvious answer!

I don't think any team has ever done it.

For England, probably Copa America.

World Cup... if the Euros was still 16 teams it would be a closer call, but the general standard has dropped so it's easier for teams to pick up momentum by beating crap - Austria today is a good example. It would still be a massive surprise if they win the tournament of course but in a World Cup you wouldn't be able to get some confidence early on by beating North Macedonia. Panama in the last World Cup are probably of comprabale quality but they were an exception to the rule - there aren't as many potential whipping boys as there are in the Euros.

When the Euros was down to the best 16 teams it was generally regarded as the hardest to win. Unfortunately as usual the people with the power have decided it needs to be changed for the worse.

I think there are generally far more weak teams in the World Cup than the euros, even with the (rubbish) extended format.

That was what prompted my question to be honest. This year especially, England's route route if they're going to go deep in this tournament will involve having to beat some of the best teams in the world early on. I'm not sure that's always true of the World Cup.

Yeah, whoever wins this one is going to earn it.

We got to the semis in Russia without having to beat much, that can’t happen this time.

Indeed. Some of the teams that make it through from the Oceanic/Asia region are woeful.

Definitely a longer tail of quality in the WC vs the Euros.

edit: by longer tail of quality, I meant more poor teams. I didn't phrase that very well!

Think you only have to compare our current Euro group stage games to those in the last World Cup when we were grouped with Belgium, Tunisia and Panama.

Try doing the same with other major teams, if you want to double check.

Sorry when I said "longer tail" I meant far fewer teams of quality.

I've been awake too long today!

Copa America, no San Marino Gibraltar or Luxembourg games at that level.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

One contains just European teams, one contains just American and one has everyone in the world in it.

Hmmmm tricky one....

I don’t get why this extended format is so bad. More games, longer tournament and a chance for some of the smaller nations to have a go.

I don't mind more teams or a longer tournament, it's just the messy format - with some 3rd placed teams going through. Makes for so many dead rubbers in the group stages, particularly for the better teams - many of whom are pretty much through after one game.

If they really want to give smaller teams a go then just extend it to 32 teams and have a proper tournament.

They'd need to rethink qualifying then though.

Is there a dead rubber in the Euros? 4 points pretty much gets you to round 2, and 3 points gives a fighting chance too. In that situation no one is really out until the end of their final game. Hit round 2 and it’s big hitters all the way.
