I’m waiting for lowhouse. He hates it when I start without him. (But yes, Starmer is a complete void by any measure)

His stuff on education and private schools is excellent this week. So it'll never happen while people are happy to prop up a system of spiralling social inequality.

it won't fit well with the cap doffers - their betters not being able to claim their businesses are charities it might help if Labour stated that was what it was about - not 'taxing' private education, merely removing the scam they have enjoyed for far too long Much as with colleges like Trinity (Cambs), whose assets are £1.5 billion plus........ they own the land Felixstowe docks sits on, and the O2 arena amongst much other, however the income those assets generate is treated as charity "pass the port old fellow" there is much that can and should be done in this and similar areas it will no doubt cause howls of outrage from brexiteers " it haint right guv'nor, thems our betters, and the more moneys they have the mores the crumbs will fall from the table, gawd bless 'em" stop the scams, close the loopholes and end the umpteen ways tax is avoided through claiming 'bogus' charitable status a worthy read that highlights where the real problems lie within our society, and economy https://www.monbiot.com/2019/06/12/landfall/

all universities have endowments to varying degrees which are used to fund charitable activities (research, student hardship etc) which are over and above their activities which are financed through publicly funded fees. university endowments and public schools are very different things.

err yes, I think that is known however much seems skewed towards simply increasing its wealth, as with "follows Cambridge’s £350m bond issue in 2016, used to finance large-scale property developments in north Cambridge." and held investments in Arconic, the company responsible for the cladding on Grenfell tower yet "Despite Cambridge’s colleges alone sitting on assets worth just under £7bn, Queens’ College remains the only one accredited by the Living Wage Foundation" Too much emphasis is on continuing wealth accumulation, and ensuring that the largesse finds its way into well connected pockets via endowments to fellows and unaccountable 'research' bodies'. Reform is long over due.

charities can't simply increase their wealth - it must be applied for their charitable purposes. i suspect lots people on here also had exposure to that company through investments linked to their pensions - university endowments are no different in that sense, they tend to hold equities which their fund managers choose for them. i think the 'property developments' were for operational purposes - 'eddington' in north cambridge which is being used, amongst other things, for university key worker housing.

I agree. She’s genuine old Labour. Not some privately educated Islington loon pretending to be old Labour. She’s seen the current shower up front and personal and concludes that a lot of the front bench are scum. Should she apologise? No Will she apologise? She’ll be forced to, otherwise her words will become this week’s story rather than Starmer’s vision for the country. And I don’t find her words as offensive as the Tory MP who suggested a bomb be sent to the offices of Anneliese Dodds. Regardless of whether it was a joke or not. Oddly that isn’t getting the same coverage. Some of us remember when actual bombs were being sent to our politicians at this time of the year.

i don't find her words offensive, but we need to build up credibility and seriousness and i suspect for many of the people we need to win over this style suggests just the opposite. it is playing to the members (it is conference after all and she wants to be leader), but it won't win broader support. she's definitely old labour - the comparison to john presscot is actually a bit scarey.

“How he would move the country forward” .... It was basically the 90s re-heated. As if the last 20 years of neoliberalism failing, austerity, and the pandemic have been mere bugs rather than features. Or that the future and its challenges aren’t now very different. On top of which that “vision” basically calls himself and his leadership pledges out for what they were ... Lies and deceptions to get elected. There’s no vision there at all. The current Labour leadership and the powers ringing the throne are close to the Tories on almost every socioeconomic measure but their lack of competence and honesty is the bigger betrayal of the electorate. They’re going to gift the appallingly dishonest Tories the next election because they’re constantly proving politicians are “as bad as each other and can’t be trusted.”

I can't imagine they'll gift it to them quite as decisively as Corbyn did.

Which goes to show how little most people in the UK understand social democracy. And why should they, they’ve never seen it until Corbyn came along and that was called far-left socialism. It’s boilerplate liberalism. Which I humbly suggest is nowhere near enough for the challenges facing the UK nor is it distinct enough from Boris. I can see the Tories easily continuing to outflank Labour on most issues because ruthlessness and expediency will always defeat weak principles.
