Toto and Burgess 16:36 - Dec 30 with 3004 viewschrismakin

I think sadly, and as much as I've always liked him. This may be the last season of Toto at town. If our CBs are to be bringing the ball out like last night, which itself was brilliant to see, its not something I can't forsee Toto being able to do it comfortably.

Where does it also leave Burgess do you think?

Right now fourth choice. Don’t understand sone level of criticism he has had, can’t think of too many times he’s really really let us down/cost us.

I think central he would be fine in this 3, should anyone get injured.

Think the £750k price point looks a little high right now. But for large parts of his Town career people would have said the same about Donacien, but he has been superb this season.

It was probably unlikely that Nsiala would get a contract extension regardless, tbh. If we're looking to upgrade the first team in the Summer, then we'll need to make space somehow and out-of-contract players are going to be the most straightforward way to do that.

Nsiala, Jackson, Nolan, Kenlock, Carroll is 5 wages off the bill, 4 spots in the squad opened up without much effort.

Burgess, well, is he so bad on the ball that we couldn't possibly make use of him? Played well in a 3 at Accrington, didn't he?

There's also the question of Ndaba coming back. He's 22, got a 2-year extension this season and has done what was asked of him at Swindon. Does he get added to the first team squad?

Agree regarding the out of contract players, they will surely move on.

I’ve never seen enough of Ndaba to be convinced he should be around the first team, but has very rarely featured for us if truth be told.

Ndaba is at Salford - albeit recovering from an injury currently. Simpson is at Swindon.

Not played a single minute of league football for us, but seemingly did enough in training and at Salford (got my "S" teams that play in red mixed up!) to get himself another couple of years. They liked him at Ayr too, I believe.

If McKenna thinks he's up to it, he's a very versatile player to have around. Both Salford and Ayr used him at CB, LB and DM at various points.

Of the out-of-contract players, you'd presume Aluko has definitely done enough to trigger another year and the jury will be out on Norwood.

I think it is a shame for the football club toto has been here as long as he ahs - crazy that he was bought when we were hoping to be an upwardly mobile Championship club.

Footballers need to be able to play football - I've never enjoyed watching him here as he is so poor on the ball - that's not to say he has been awful, he had a good year last year and does enough things well, but he's miles off what sort of player I enjoy watching.

Burgess got a lot to prove, hopefully he can do so - but he needs to move the ball faster - i worry about his (lack of speed) as well, especially on the turn

I wonder how much of Salford McKenna has seen being up in the North West with the obvious MU links as well - possibly may even have seen it as a job he'd have fancied at some point.

But I think ndaba could be a player that succeeds here - has all the raw attributes and very versatile - left foot gives a nice balance as well

Toto's a solid baseline defender with no frills, perfectly adequate for a League Two club, but he obviously has his limitations, and given where we aim to be he's just not uo to standard.

Won't go down as a laughing stock like Reo-Coker or Fish which is probably an achievement in itself for him.

Burgess doesn't excite me one bit, and makes me worry when he plays, wouldn't shed any tears if he was sold, but can't see anyone willing to pay what we did.

Having said that, if McKenna is a good coach as everyone is saying, then he might take someone like Burgess and work on his game and improve him. Something we haven't had in years at PR.

Toto is the single worst player i have seen in a Town shirt when he has to use the ball when in possession. His default seems to be just to stand still with it unless there is a simple option directly in front of him. Decent blocker, last ditch tackler etc. but awful with the ball, so i agree, he won't play again unless we have some injuries.

I've only seen Burgess a couple of times, but I have been alarmed by just how poor he is with the ball. He seems a decent stopper, but very limited with it, from the little I've seen.

I can only hope that McKenna and his team can work with him otherwise he looks a pretty poor signing.

I remember you saying when we got him he was a really good signing!

Think he’s ok, but nothing more, tbf the rashness has improved over the last 12-15 months.

I'd only seen him once or twice but at the time we were a more limited side so would have fitted in better, but can't imagine thinking he was a really good signing - I thought Nolan was but was obviously wrong on that one as he has been a bigger disappointment!

I've said it numerous times, if Nsiala is still in the team, the defence hasn't improved. He's not very good.

What is about Toto that you like so much? The constant errors? The numerous penalties given away? The number of red cards accumulated?

Unfortunately being slow on the turn can't really be coached out of him and he has looked awfully vulnerable. A panic buy from Cook I reckon.

I’ve seen him more than that. And he’s really not that bad. Even whipped in the left-wing cross of the season vs. Wycombe I believe.

Think the post above about judging Donacien has got it spot on. JD also had a similarly stop-start beginning in a stuttering team. Now, he’s probably been our best player alongside Edmundson.

There’s certainly time for Burgess to show more. And if we’re not going to have Walton’s confidence under the high ball then Burgess might coming into the reckoning as he’s a beast in the air.

Oh absolutely. Same here.

But that applies to over half the current squad who probably also need to be in a much more settled team and role to really look the part.

Ha! That’s summer’s recruitment was dismal.

Donacien the best of the lot and only just proving it 3 years into his stay says it all.

I think the priority of McKenna’s January shopping list was clear to see after 20 minutes last night.

Cover for JD, Woolf and Edmundson. Or somebody of quality who would take their place.

As a no nonsense league 1 defender he is one of the most reliable at certain aspects. Absolutely he has his weaknesses like many but he's never say die attitude helped us more than recognised.

Number of reds? Bit bizarre not sure why you've mentioned reds.

Errors.. all defenders make them.
