Cook sounds like he is a Nokia in a Smartphone world.
Lovely bloke, and his methods worked well in certain "back to the wall" environments, but his tactical nous was non existent and by the sounds of things, his training methods were a throwback to years gone by. |  |

Indeed, the training under Cook was just very repetitive and boring, from what I heard (certainly towards the end of his time when the results just weren't consistent enough).
Think Penney may be saying those things as well because Cook did stick him on the transfer list also. |  |

I'd heard he stuck him on the transfer list after the Plymouth game (think someone else said that on here - maybe itfcjoe - also).

Yep, heard the same. Cook hung him out to dry after his mistake for the goal at Plymouth. Apparently after that game he made his mind up on him and I dont think he really played again. The fact Bailey Clements played ahead of him when he was fit tells you a lot.
FWIW I like Penney, obviously Coulson is better option when fit but I'd like Penney to stay around. |  | | |

Transfer listed him a few months after signing him and yet I don't think Penney was ever that bad. Playing Clements 3 games in a week when he is a youngster that had hardly played a professional game was another ludicrous decision.
Really strange from Cook - he really did lose the plot a bit here when things didn't work out. Still can't believe some people were so hesitant to sack him. If anything it was too slow, not too quick |  |

In fairness when we interviewed David Johnson on Blue Monday pod he said the same about Burley's sessions - the same every week, same order, same sessions - and that they were pretty boring etc but obviously worked.
But guess this is 20 years later and things have moved on so far |  |

Yes it’s probably a lot easier to stomach when you actually see results from it.
If you’re struggling and in a bit of a rut I can’t imagine there’s much motivation from the players knowing they’re heading into training just to do the same things over and over. It may have ended up working long term but clearly something was not right this season. | | | |

No, and with a lot of first team players there needs to be really well thought out and engaging sessions - had heard from one that feels a lot more modern now and Cook's sessions at times felt like going through motions and plodding along.
Have also heard all sessions now filmed on drone and the performance staff are clipping up videos to go through with the individual players for where they need to improve, and been empowered to do so by McKenna, i.e. not all has to be run through him, if they see bits which aren't right they can correct with the players | |

That sounds promising and is a logical step given the direction the club is heading in. No point putting all this infrastructure in place when you have a manager who wants complete control over everything. A shame we wasted the first half of the season with Cook when it was clear he wouldn’t work in this setup.

He had a torrid time that day, especially in the first half - but it didn't warrant being transfer listed and training with the u23's.
We all have bad days, and by and large he's been steady for us all season, and moving to the wing-back role he has actually looked a lot better - suits him much better. | | | |
