Putney 21:34 - Mar 27 with 3070 viewsCoastalblue

I don't really remember him particularly, though I must have seen him play dozens of games for us. Looking through some stuff he won suporters player of the year in '84 in a side which included Wark, Mariner, Butcher, Osman.

Was he that good?

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

Sort of a poor man’s Matt Holland from what I can remember.

Started off as a full-back but became more of a Flynn Downes sort of midfielder (well he was blonde, anyway!). Got about the park well, as they say.

Putney & Grew, St Nicholas Street! Anyone shop in there? He was also knocked senseless in the League Cup semi up the road, think he broke his jaw, so his move there was an odd one. He comments on The Bobby Robson Years FB page along with John Lindford

Unremarkable player with a short highlights reel. Think he was consistent more than anything else. My only real memory of him was scoring a mistimed header in front of the away end at Upton Park in the FA Cup, earning a replay, which we lost.

Trevor Putney was by no means the worst player we ever had. He was, in my memory, a ham an egg sort of midfielder. No pace to him, nothing particularly outstanding bar that shock of blond hair. I don’t remember too many tears being shed when he left.

Wasn't it a swap with John Deehan, who was past his best. Certainly seemed like we got the raw end of the deal at the time.

No.
He was a hardworking chaser/tackler without much more than effort to his game.

Bobby Ferguson told him he only won it as he was blond and people were able to pick him out from the rest of the team more easily!

I didn't think he was. he seemed to epitomise the downgrade in players we were experiencing. After the likes of Muhren, Thiessen, Wark, etc, to have Putters in midfield just didn't seem right and we knew our time at the top was up. He was hardworking but just didn't have the same quality.

Yes, he played in a Norwich team that finished 4th in the top league, so I guess Norwich fans remember him fondly.

Just had to look this up. Probably the most common knowledge ITFC thing that has escaped me!

I started going regularly home and away in 87 (I was 7) and remember pretty much all of the team from 86-87 onwards yet had no idea Deehan played for us let alone scored 11 in 45 games or whatever it was I just saw his stats as.

Yes, but it was all relative, wasn't it? We were hoping that his era that followed on from the greats was just a blip, but it turned out to be part of a great decline which even our later two brief returns to the Premier could not entirely mask (said with the benefit of hindsight!).

Check out his playing career which, though later hampered by a severe injury included 350 apps (300 at a higher level than we are now) his transfer fees and club captaincy elsewhere and there's no reason for people to get sniffy just because he was less memorable than what went before. Were he at his height now, he'd be an automatic pick, except that, we wouldn't be able to get him.

Or was it one shorter than the other?

Yes it was all relative. That's the point really. Pretty much anyone who played for us from about 1970 to the mid 80s would be an automatic pick now and any of them would be the best player in the current side.

I reckon you're thinking of Glenn Pennyfather. Richard Naylor's knee problems were down to the same thing though.

Looking at Putters Wiki page took me down a little rabbit hole where I learn that Mich D'Avray's real name was Jean-Michel d'Avray.

I never knew that before.

maybe he just ended up in better teams, I dont recall him as being particularly great, certainly not compared to the players that had come before him, and whilst maybe better than some of the dross that followed, felt he was always average when he played for us, and yes probably stood out most for his blonde hair on the pitch more.

I'd say he was about on a level with Stockwell (as any map of London will tell you.) . He just moved clubs more often.

He looked a good player when he first came in, a very busy all-action style, similar to Brian Talbot, but became apparent after awhile he wasn't in the same class as those who came before him, but who was? Brennan, Cranson, Yallop, Hallworth etc were all decent Division Two players.

All that crop that came through were downgrades on what went before:
Kevin Steggles
Tommy Parkin
Irvin Gernon
Trevor Putney
Ian Cranson
Frank Yallop
Mich D’Avray
David Barnes
Michael Cole
Even Mick Stockwell… he was no Mick Mills or George Burley.

That’s an interesting point actually that I have never thought about much before. What happened to our youth team/scouting etc in the late 70s/early 80s? No one even close to the class of Wark Butcher Gates etc

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Poll: With Evans taking 65% in Huddersfield, is the Banter Era over?
