Briefly mentioned on another thread.
My word he was a talent that lad.
I always thought he was destined for so much more.
Felt similar about Bowditch and Billy Clarke.

Poll: Apologies I'm bored. How many signings will we have by Plymouth at home.

The hype around Billy Clarke....but also so many others, who was the last really good academy player to come though? Dyer, Ambrose, Bramble for me, not much springs to mind since then. Even those that made a decent career, Marriot, Rhodes have under achieved compared to the hype around them?

Where is Jack Marriot now? I genuinely can't tell you without googling it.

Poll: Will Phil ever confirm we are actually close on a signing ever again

I thought Jack Marriot was at Derby or Peterborough?

Downes is clearly worth a mention, on the verge of playing in the Prem. Wickham was a talent too.

Also, the likes of Dyer would probably be poached before making a first team appearance these days. Like Knight or Flores.

really? He was a good athlete but technically lacking. Had a dream season 1st season but he got into that side because we didn't have any money and he had a left foot.

It would have been Wickham if he hadn't been constantly injured.

Downes may be a player, Dyer to Downes is long wait. Is Martiot at Derby or Posh? Literally no idea, haven't heard his name mentioned in so long.

Maybe not Dyer, home town boy with a genuine connection with the club but you're point stands as a rule in this day and age

FWIW, I really liked the partnership he and Richards had down the left. Not a lot of people seemed to agree at the time though! They were the least of our problems and in hindsight we've struggled to have such and effective partnership on that side since.

Matt Richards was treated really badly here. Not the best player we’ve ever had but far worse have been given a far easier ride than him.

Shame our financial situation was what it was then. Matt Richards was a far better LM than LB and, had we had a pot to piss in even, we would've had someone else in at LB, pushed Richards on and brought westy inside.

*Sigh*

15 years in which we have been operating outside the top flight too. In that time we have brought through plenty who have played at the same level as us and a few who have gone onto play higher. Of course, it would be better still if we could have an academy like Southampton's when they were at this level but that is the exception and not the rule.

Additionally, the last 15 years has seen poor investment in the academy. Didn't Keane let Klug go for a while too? That will have set the academy back for some time until after he returned. How long after a player starts working with the academy before they come through?

Completely agree, they developed a really good understanding, and it only really came unstuck when the crowd got on Richards' back and seemed to irreparably knock his confidence.

I'm not saying we haven't produced players who had good careers, I'd kill for Jordan Rhodes career, less the Nodge blip, but how many players have we produced that lived up to the buzz since say 2000?

Darren Bent.

(As mentioned by another poster) An England player, and actually seemed to understand his debt to ITFC.

Yep, Darren Bent for me too. He genuinely looked like he’d make the grade in the PL almost from the off. And most of his career was subsequently played at that level and for his country. Different level to what followed.

Biggest disappointment was Bowditch. At 16, what talent. Like many players, he just never kicked on. Tbf, he made a good career in the lower leagues and very few people achieve that, but I just thought he was an outstanding prospect as a yoof/start of his senior career.
