North vs South All stars game 07:31 - Sep 14 with 3108 views | bluelagos | So the Chelsea owner has proposed an All stars game with a North v South split. I just looked at the Prem and there are exactly 10 sides notth and 10 sides south of us atm. So every chance we could be in either when this gets to fruitition. Which side you to be on?

North vs South All stars game on 07:37 - Sep 14 with 2463 views | Ely_Blue | Ah of course a “how much money can we make out of a sports franchise’ yank is going to want to Americanise football in this country. It’s a stupid idea which the majority of clubs will never (rightly so) agree to and it’s just another glorified friendly and a week/weekend that has to be fitted into the calendar. I say leave that BS for the yanks and their basketball/hockey teams

Who'd turn up to such a nonsense game? This idea that you can select 11 players and they magically become a team has been debunked many times.

Fans will be able to tell you how many times their favourite player has been selected for the Pro Bowl, and whether they were a starter or not. 2) no one else plays American Football*, so this is the closest they get to the recognition of international call ups and caps. 3) the draft system means great players end up with bad teams. This puts them in the company they deserve. 4) the NFL is an amalgamation of the original NFC and the upstart AFC. This is a reminder of that history, and pits the two Conferences against each other. 5) they all get to go to Hawaii at the end of the season. The broadcasters get to go to Hawaii. Hawaii, the remotest of the 50 states, gets to be included in the NFL. I can't see the same enthusiasm for an EPL All Star Game in Port Stanley. *Canadian Football is played to slightly different rules. European nations against an USA team would be like Gibraltar versus Pele's 1970 Brazil team. You could just about field a "Rest of the World" team of professionals from the NFL. The Offensive and Defensive Lines would be OK (Pacific Island heritage players) and the Running Backs would be decent. Quarter Back? Not so.

The Pro Bowl hasn’t been held in Hawaii for some years, and most of your other points miss the mark. Point one for example is fairly meaningless as they also name All Pro teams which take precedent TBH though I don’t think you could have highlighted a worse sport given that as far as the American sports All Star games go the Pro Bowl is by far the least popular, hardly anyone gives a sh*t about it (players included). The NBA with the accompanying dunk contest and MLB with the Home Run Derby are hugely popular, and there probably isn’t any reason the same couldn’t apply in football if some suitable gimmicks were included

He was more referencing the NBA and MLB which have held incredibly popular all-star events for decades. Can see why he would think it's a good idea (and also why the money men might see it as a good commercial opportunity) but the main reason it's unlikely to happen here is the practicality of scheduling it.

They could call it "The Thirty", with quarter of an hour each way, followed by an extended penalty shoot-out whether one is needed or not. Goalies have one hand tied behind their back to make scoring easier. Plus dancing girls, fire and a performance from some band who had one hit 20 or so years ago.

You’re correct about the pro bowl being the least important all-star game but truly, they are all worthless gimmicky nonsense games which mean nothing. Americans have a peculiar desire for that stuff and I don’t quite know why, possibly because their fandom isn’t as tribal or based on hating other teams as much as footy in the UK. To sum up, Chelsea can fook off with this stupid patronizing idea.

Indeed, and American Football (sensibly) has a much shorter season so it's easy to fit in a game like this. We've already accepted too much American style razzamataz into football - protracted pre game nonsense, hysterical stadium announcers etc.

Another short story, sometimes our best efforts go astray. So in my brief teaching career we got an aboriginal speaker in to take a class assembly, idea being that we could follow it up with some PHSE on people's race and how we are all proud of each other and celebrate our diversity. Guy gets up and opens with a simple question "What's better? Being white or being black". He points to an enthusiastic child with their hand up in the air who loudly proclaims "White!"

The Len Cantello Testimonial Match, (West Bromwich Albion XI v Cyrille Regis & Laurie Cunningham XI), was a testimonial football match that took place in May 1979 to celebrate West Bromwich Albion player Len Cantello, who played for the club over 300 times between 1968 and 1979. The teams were selected based on the colour of the players' skin. The West Bromwich Albion XI was composed of white players while the Cyrille Regis & Laurie Cunningham XI was composed of black players. The Cyrille Regis & Laurie Cunningham XI featured Ian Benjamin (Sheffield United), Vernon Hodgson (West Bromwich Albion — a trialist), Brendon Batson (West Bromwich Albion), Derek Richardson (QPR), Stewart Phillips (Hereford United), George Berry (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Bob Hazell (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Garth Crooks (Stoke City), Winston White (Hereford Utd), Cyrille Regis (West Bromwich Albion), Laurie Cunningham (West Bromwich Albion), Remi Moses (West Bromwich Albion), Valmore Thomas (Hereford United). Unsurprisingly, most of the players were Midlands-based.

Um.... in the exact same interview, he suggested playoffs to see who gets relegated (i.e. the three in relegation zone and three in promotion places from league below) Once again, he can absolutely feck off back to America with that tripe.

Genuinely... The guy asks again, this time he picks a black kid who says "It's black" By this time pretty much every teacher had their head in the hands before the guy picked a year 6 pupil (Teachers at the back now pointing towards them) and we finally get the "It makes no difference" answer. Kid never got in trouble - think he was a year 4 from memory and was just answering a question honestly. One lesson though - you should never ask a question you're not happy to hear the answer to.

I would say that the SuperBowl is more of a reminder of the two separate leagues coming together. Until the merger there was the NFL and the AFL leagues who's champions played for the NFL-AFL championship. Superbowl IV was the first played between the champs of the AFC and the NFC which were the two conferences formed from the merger. The moniker "SuperBowl" was first used in SB III.
