I think the contract may have been announced but there might have been issues in signing it.

BBC saying he signed a 3 year deal last month. On the face of it a ridiculous decision.

Makes you wonder if someone else had become available and they’re going after them. We’ll see soon won’t we.

Leam Richardson - New 3 Year Contract by TalkingBlues 5 Nov 2022 14:22
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63388769

This was signed after they'd just lost 5 out of 6 league games, a run that has now extended to 8 out of 10 and sees them in the relegation zone. Is this worse than the new contract Evans gave to Lambert just after our slide down the table?

If you are Cook, you’ve got to ask the question surely? However, would Richardson want to go back as a No.2 after - on the whole - having a successful stint as a No.1?

I think it's a little premature considering how tight the Champ is at the moment.

Ah, ok. There were certainly questions about paying players on time and some odd tweets from the club about Richardson. Looks like the season of relative stability that Richardson brought them on the pitch is all going a bit wrong.

Harsh on the bloke as he massively overachieved last season. He'd still be in the job if he was say 6th in League 1 right now.

Exactly this. It's actually ridiculous that a manager effectively can get sacked by being too successful and having to operate at a higher level. If Wigan were still a competitive L1 club he would still have a job.

Wigan have turned into a total mess in the last few weeks - not paying players etc.

I wonder if Will Keane signed that new contract in the end?

Might be imagining this, but pretty sure someone confirmed that he hadn't a couple of weeks ago.

Interesting that Richardson was being used as a stick to beat Cook with by some last year (rightly or wrongly), yet here we are one year on with Cook at Chesterfield, Richardson on the unemployed heap.

Maybe Richardson wasn’t the driving force after all, maybe he was, but on the face of it maybe they worked better together than separately, bit like Clough and Taylor.

Either way, it seems a bit harsh on Richardson. Something is amiss at Wigan.

I still think that the main problem with Cook here was that he was just a poor fit. It happens. Would Richardson with him have made a difference? I doubt it but who knows.

Richardson won the title last year and has been harshly sacked in the Championship, Paul Cook is in the National League so not sure there's that much in it in that respect!

Harshly sacked?

He's won 1 in 10 games and sit 2nd bottom.

a niche perspective

I suppose it depends on whether you choose to attribute that to him, or the context of allegedly not paying players and Wigan's wider financial insecurity.

I know I wouldn't perform at my best if I didn't think my work could pay me, regardless of whether I had a good manager.

We don't have much to go off. But I'd suggest over achievement last year and 4w, 4d, and 2l from their first 10 games this season suggestions that something changed that may not be entirely due to him.

Considering they are bottom of Championship spending, it was always going to be a tough ask, you would have thought given the success he had last year, he would be given longer than 3 months.

I think it's harsh.

Were a shell of a club losing players every week with no owners and he kept them in League 1

Were about 8-10th in bookies odds last year and win the league

Then fall into relegation zone for first time all season - and are still just 6 points away from Reading in 12th

So 2 seasons of massive overperformance and one season of probably about par is harsh just in football terms before you see the rest of the rubbish being dealt with.

Will Keane was going to come here before deadline day, presumably on a longer better contract, but he gets offered a new deal to stay - sounds from the above as though he hasn't signed it - how motivated is he right now when been stiffed out of tens of thousands of pounds
