Best save you've seen from an ITFC goalkeeper? 09:39 - Mar 17 with 3637 viewsITFC_Forever

Following on from an article on the BBC website:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64906797

Trying to think.... the one that comes first to mind is Richard Wright at Wembley which kept the score at 3-2, Hristov (I think) headed towards goal at the far end and for all the world I thought it was in, until a clenched goalkeeping glove appeared from nowhere to knock it away.

In terms of overall goalkeeping performances, two more from Wright - Blackburn away in the FA Cup replay in 1996, and Arsenal away in around January / February 2001.

I can't remember who it was against, but can remember Neil Alexander pulling off a triple save that was incredible!
But yeah Wrighty just had those games when it looked light no one would go past him.

Give him a ball and a yard of grass

Bart made three unbelievable saves in his time with us:

1. The deflected shot where he was going the wrong way and somehow got down the tip it over the bar Gordon Banks style.
2. One where he saved it from point blank range, it went on the underside of the bar and then he had the reactions to palm it out of harms way from the floor reaching up.
3. And possibly my favourite; makes two quick saves and then the ball is squirming towards the goal until the Bartman flings himself backwards into harms way and scoops it away. The speed at which everything happened was incredible.

Bart really was a fantastic shot stopper.

We played WBA at home and at the time Lee Hughes was in top form. I remember Richard Wright pulling off a few great saves including a couple one-one-ones.

We played Blackburn away (I think in the FA Cup) and he pulled off a couple spectacular saves as well.

Sereni from an inadvertent Jim Magilton, last minute vs Villa in the relegation season. Extraordinary.

Second place Wright pen/rebound vs Stockport.

Richard Wright's save in the last few minutes in the Play-Off Final. Certainly up there in importance, but a fantastic save in its own right.

Craig Forrest from Andy Thompson at Wolves in the FA Cup. Incredible reach to even get there let alone keep out a header destined for the top corner.

I'm trying to remember who is was against but I remember Wright saving a penalty at PR and it rebounded back to the taker who looked for all the world to have a tap in, Wright managed to get back up and stick out an arm to keep it out. Proper business.

Was that the Stockport one? I think it may even have been Tony Dinning who took the penalty?

Think so, December 1999 I think, in the hinterland that is between Christmas and New Year.

That rings a bell, if I'd had to guess I'd have said Stockport.

In terms of 'most important' Wright from Craig Hignett in the playoff final when we were 3-2 up.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

That was the one.

Seem to recall it was added as a very late entrant to the Britannia Building Society "Ipswich Save of the Century" competition which Wright won with those saves.

Thanks for aiding my failing memory, lads. I remember it being properly Baltic at that game which is possibly why, along with the save, it's etched in my memory. Have a vague recollection of Scowie scoring but could be wrong.

Richard Wright triple save vs Bristol City at Ashton Gate in 1999. We won 1-0.

Honourable mention to David Stockdale in a 4-1 defeat at Millwall in 2011. Caught out of position with the ball played across the area. Millwall player blasted the ball towards an empty net. Stockdale, running back across goal, stuck out a hand and deflected the ball onto the underside of the bar and away.

Craig Forrest at Derby in the League Cup. Somehow managed to tip a header over the bar from close range. Shilton was applauding from the other end of the pitch.

That's why we didn't get relegated sooner. We only finished 4 points from the drop back in 2016/17.

Boxing Day 1992 was in the 1992-93 season.

We played Arsenal away in 1993-94 in September, so the Christmas-time game would have been the Boxing Day 1992 game... we were in a terrace in the corner of the Clock End, and they had the mural in front of the North Bank as it was being re-built.
