I have little knowledge on this subject but does the England approach to batting meet your approval. I have read that test cricket is on the decline so does this add to your game or take it away.

I'm all for it. It's good to watch, aggressive, confident and fast scoring. I think it plays to the strengths of our attack as well. My fear was that it can be borderline reckless and while we've give away a couple of wickets cheaply today I guess that's always a consequence. If we can maintain a nice balance of confidence and aggression without recklessness I'm all for it.

It’s not just the batting but declarations like that are new

Pick up a wicket or 2 this evening and the pressure in on Australia

First reaction is omg. Second is, we’ve got to bowl them out twice whatever, so why not?

Bowling is tiring in this heat too. Makes sense to try and take a wicket today and go again tomorrow fresh.

Very much in favour. An exciting, attacking innings has always provided memorable cricket - think Botham in 1981. At least the high run-rates tend to remove the draw from the equation. Those things are likely to attract new fans to the long-form game.

Plus the ball will still be relatively new in the morning, when there's often more chance of getting a bit of swing.

Fine balancing act isn't it - at the rate Rooot was scoring at the end, I'd have liked to see them go past 400 at least, for the psychological edge if nothing else.

I was very surprised by the declaration, it would make more sense to go gung ho and get another 20/30 runs. The Aussies have a good batting line up so every run counts
As a test purist I'm happy with the aggressive play, over 4 innings it will even it self out, nobody wants to see a boring draw

Love it, anything that helps keep test cricket alive is good. There can be no greater win than one earned over 5 long days in the middle. Its exciting, absorbing and entertaining.

I'd like to have seen Chris Tavare have a go at baz ball.

" I have read that test cricket is on the decline"

A sold out Edgbaston bore witness to that. Though I have read they had to pay spectators to fill the seats.

The thundery weather on Sunday will probably shorten the match, and may produce some interesting bowling conditions come Monday.

I think the declaration is reckless but this is Bazball, it isn't meant to make sense

The Aussie fans have been saying it would be impossible for us to score freely against their attack but I think today has shown at least, we are not going to take a backward step and we are going to be aggressive with them, it's good to see

England are always better when they are aggressive and not bullied by the Aussies

You can’t argue with nearly 400 runs in a day. But at least three wickets were given away to reckless shots.I too Am a lover of test cricket, and have to admit that this England team are a great watch. Our Opening bowlers are veterans , and may struggle on unhelpful pitches, so we. Will see.

It is a batting wicket, so a High score was always on the cards. But not in such a spectacular fashion, I should imagine.

With Sunday looking to be rained off the thought must have been that staying in bat, maybe Sat morn would run a decent score but would make it hard to complete 4 innings over 4 days.

If that is the thinking, then great. Good to see an attacking mindset, rather than batting on knowing bar a collapse in the second innings a draw would be most likely

A few early wickets tomorrow, and quite a few beers will see Edgbaston come to live. Always been a vociferous crowd.

But that would have denied them the 20 minutes of Broad and Robinson against Warner and Khawaja which, while it didn't get a wicket, easily could have (and certainly put the wind up them, judging by that running). Possibly also wasted what may be the best bowling conditions tomorrow morning while our last two wickets fall.

For me, getting Warner, Smith and Labuschagne out for no more than 50 each will be the key to this test. Far more than a few extra runs on the board, which those three could erase in no time, if allowed to get going.

If they win fine,if the Aussies spend the next 2 days amassing 600 runs and lose a day to rain,so make a get a result declaration on the 5th day and then bowl England out cheaply for 200 runs then it's a reminder test cricket isn't just and extended odi game.

We will see. As Boycott always says you don't know how good this pitch is till both sides have played on it. England's declaration seems more gamesmanship inspired than we've got plenty of runs

My assessment may well have been influenced by hindsight & the absence of a wicket!

Agreed, the aggressive approach is great, but they easily could have got another 60/70 with Root and Robinson batting well, giving up those runs for 4 overs bowling at them before close probably not worth it and a bit showy.

Yes. If long form cricket is to survive, something had to happen. England’s approach is refreshing and exciting. I know the Ashes sells out, but it’s the only test series that does.

Test cricket used to be watched by people who enjoyed cricket. Now it is watched by people with the attention span of a gnat most of whom are half p!ssed.

So yes - this is a bunch of poor test cricketers and Root playing to their strengths - basically reducing test cricket to a somewhat dull elongated form of panto cricket.

Morning Ellie

Would you rather watch Boycott grinding out 50 runs over 3 days or bowlers bowling balls that while they won’t concede runs have as much chance of taking wickets as I do of becoming pope

Sport is about 2 things

1, entertainment
2, results

Whether you like it or both bazball and McKennaball provide both

And this coming from a cricket purist who loves the 5 day game

Bit like football, you I presume you don’t know much about cricket if those two paragraphs are anything to go by.

Glad to see the happy pills are working.
