Now the Dust Has Settled a Little 20:28 - Sep 23 with 9399 viewsMetal_Hacker

It does worry me a little we’ve conceded 9 goals from the home games so far

Without being a killjoy I do think this needs to be addressed sooner rather than later

Not sure if it’s a collective issue or individual

We can’t always score one more than the other team …..can we ?

We are outscoring that though, so no worries.

It was an open affair and we invited pressure whilst taking the game to them.

To play a more closed game would have consequences elsewhere. McKenna pretty acknowledged this in his after match chat.

It is unsettling that we're conceding but whilst we're outscoring the fckers it's not the most concerning matter.

Possibly, but we could tip the balance and start conceding less but scoring less and draw more. Fair concern if course but hard to get the balance right.

McKenna made a good point that Blackburn have created more chances than any other team in the division. (They haven't got the balance right at back). Really the goal issue was just Blackburn and Leeds. Both with very good attacking threat.

We've kept more clean sheets than anyone so I think just a case of playing what's in front of us and adjusting

29 shots and 11 on target....

As I've said before...the minute we stop creating chances is when I'll worry.

Weird how they've kept three clean sheets in four away games when, according to you, they can't defend.

By McKenna's comments it seems he's happy to take that bet with regards to risk vs reward and wants us to be more clinical to kill games off at home. A 4th when we were 3-1 up probably knocks the stuffing out of Blackburn and similarly a 5th at 4-3 does the same.

Seem to be saving the slightly more reserved performances for away matches (though we could have won the last 2 much more comfortably in fairness).

2 of those games have also been against Leeds and Blackburn who are two of the top teams in the division at creating chances and getting shots away.

You're right. Can we bring back the Keane back four of 4 CBs please?

Genuinely, what are you expecting? We are a Championship team, an excellent start to the season, scoring for fun, keeping clean sheets as well.

What is it you want?

I'll happily take the trade off Henners.

Not least as it has proven effective.

We've conceded ten goals from eight games this season. Nine have come from Leeds, Cardiff and Blackburn, and we've kept clean sheets in 50% of our matches. It feels like feast or famine when it comes to defending as a team.

I think it’s part and parcel of playing such an expansive and attacking brand of football. We attack in good numbers and with pace, but a consequence of that is you will leave space if you lose the ball. We’re highly effectively at winning the ball back in the opposition 1/3 and create a hatful of chances. But there will be times where they break the press and have space to attack. You can’t be all things to all people. Another factor is in League 1 you’re not up against the quality to punish you so consistently, and regaining possession came so easily to us in the 2nd or 3rd phase.

You’re right though, we can’t need to score 3 or 4 to win games, but equally I don’t think we will need to all that often. 9 of our 10 goals conceded have come in 3 home games. The other 5 matches have seen 4 clean sheets and a solitary goal at Sunderland. We’ve seen our ability away to be a little more pragmatic, it’s encouraging to see that we can mix it up.

Think it was slightly too easy for them to play in and around the box. But they are a very very good attacking team and we were playing very aggresive.

Given the nature of the goals e.g. Clarke's OG today, Hladky palming it to the feet of a Leeds striker etc you can argue some of it is luck/being punished in games.

Of the 7 in two games we played two very good attacking sides. The fact we kept a clean sheet against Soton who also have tens of millions spent on players counters that somewhat.

We're unlucky not to be top of the league tonight. That'll do for me.

I think that’s how most home games will go this season. Feel we are a bit more open at home.

After the last few seasons of teams coming down here parking the bus and more we should be quite glad of the entertainment….aslong as we win of course.

Could also say the teams we've kept a clean sheet against are ones with weaker attacks.

Taking off those conceded by ourselves, these are the current goals scored for the teams we've played this season:
Sunderland - 14 (conceded 1)
Southampton - 12 (clean sheet)
Cardiff - 11 (conceded 2)
Blackburn - 9 (conceded 3)
Leeds - 9 (conceded 4)
Stoke - 7 (clean sheet)
QPR - 7 (clean sheet)
Sheffield Wednesday - 5 (clean sheet)

To state the obvious, the more potent attack, the more likely we are to concede, with Southampton as an outlier.
