On the subject of pubs. How about ones that are no longer around that you miss? 18:11 - Sep 12 with 10448 viewsgainsboroughblue

The two next to each other where Lidl is now. Ipswich Arms and Royal William. Sloanes on Bramford Lane, Rose and Crown and Hare and Hounds. Perfect for breaking up that walk into town for a night out.

Earl Roberts behind the Co-op car park in town. Still a gaping space where that once stood.

Prince of Orange (Bar Fontaine?)- Quirky place that had telephones on the tables so you could call someone you liked the look of (Please tell me I'm not imagining that)

You’re not. Bar Fontaine (with the phones) was a different beast from the Prince of Orange, which was a very good bar if I remember rightly.

The White Horse was fairly grotty by its end, but in the late-80s a good indie hangout pre-Olivias and Cindy’s.

The Bell was horrible around the same period, but quite fun as the landlord would be so drunk he’d fall asleep behind the bar and you could help yourself.

Blades had its uses.

Harry Palmer's night was at the White Horse in between being at the Vaults and ICA.

On a sort of related note, Furry night is having a reprise, as St Stephens Church next Friday. I've got tickets for UK Subs in Norwich though.

For old times sake I will say The Racecourse, Duke of Gloucester, General Gordon, Dukes and The Coach and Horses

I don't understand why they knocked down the Earl Roberts, just to do nothing with the space?

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

I lived round the corner from Racecourse for a while before they knocked it down to make way for a Tesco. Think I only went in the D.O.G. once and that was because they were in my pool teams league.

I know where the Coach and Horses was but was before my time. Where was Dukes?

It was condemned due to water damage around 97/98.

Furry was my first real 'club' experience, was going there above the White Horse from the age of about 15.

Looking forward to Friday, always brilliant tunes.

Half Moon and Star was handy for breaking up that long trek from the Jolly Sailor's up to the Greyhound.

The Crown and Anchor (on the site of the present day W.H. Smiths) was often chaotically good and you could even escape the mayhem and go upstairs for a meal if you wanted to. The Olive Leaf was handy for Civic College lunchtimes and had an interesting transformation in the evenings, The Swan is a sad shadow of its former self these days but was my local for a few years in the Seventies but The Duke of Sussex could knock them all into a cocked hat for a wayward pub experience, you had to watch out for the Norwegians if you drank the cider in there...

That makes more sense.

Was never a world beating pub, but not a bad one either.

The ship and star was the best pub ever! Was there at least 3 times a week for about a decade

Played some great gigs at Furry, remember supporting Frank Turner and our singer scoring him some illicit substances

I once walked right out of Ipswich Station and was going down towards the docks when a pub appeared on the right hand side called The Old Bell Inn.

It was very very odd, weird feeling, felt like I had walked into a weird cult - one big happy family, left as soon as I could.

Think it is a funeral parlour now.

Yeah, that’s the one I’m referring to. It was frequented by alcoholics (I know, all pubs are, but everyone in there was a heavy drinker, including the landlord), which might explain the atmosphere.

The Trafalgar could be pretty good as well, while I remember.

Well it's all changed now but from memory Dukes was around where the Buttermarket entrance is opposite Noble Romans

What was that bar called on the corner of The Buttermarket and The Walk? I think it's a clothes shop now. Used that when we came into town until the missus mobility issues became an issue.

The Crown and Anchor was our sixth form pub back in the late 70s, never had problems getting served, even in school uniform.

Sad to see The Vaults and The Golden Lion boarded up, another of our haunts whilst still at school. Many excellent memories from times spent there.

The Duke of Sussex was undoubtedly the weirdest pub in Ipswich, particularly, as you say, if you indulged in the cider.
