Just one more football quiz... π¦ 17:06 - Oct 15 with 4875 views | Miaow | English Football Clubs with Bird Nicknames A bit of a silly one, and hopefully not too difficult either, although I don't think I was actually aware of one of the 13 answers before putting it together. There are four minutes to try and get them all, with all clubs listed playing within the 92. Note: "Budgies" is unfortunately not given as one of the bird-related nicknames. https://www.jetpunk.com/user-quizzes/1696326/english-football-clubs-with-bird-ni Cheers. β½

You could award yourself that one for participating maybe? And come back and celebrate it in 50 years? On a bus? With no roof? Or would that be a bit, y'know, tin pot? 10/13 for me: Missed three of the 'duplicates', at least one of which I should have really got.

Just one more football quiz... π¦ on 18:14 - Oct 15 with 4138 views | NthQldITFC | I got excited before this because I knew The Throstles and thought maybe I just might get one that not everyone else knew as The Baggies would be a better known nickname for WBA. So imagine my disappointment when I saw it was one you had given us!

Just one more football quiz... π¦ on 11:22 - Oct 16 with 3753 views | blueasfook | I love these quizzes Miaowwers. I got 11/13. I knew one of the Bluebirds ones (Barrow) but not the other. Also one of the other Magpies I was stumped on. Keep 'em coming. How about something relating to English teams in Europe? Maybe teams to have competed in the UEFA cup or something?

I was toying with including βThe Throstlesβ - of those I greyed out, that was the one I was closest to putting in. But I decided against it as it seems to be so rarely used these days and I thought some people might have an issue with it. Sorry! (You can have a bonus point from me.)

I think I remember seeing them referred to by that nickname at least once before - it was apparently coined when the club began using a badge with the eagle on it in 1972, which was the same year that Ipswich first used the Suffolk Punch crest. It obviously hasnβt stuck but given that it has cropped up on one or two pages online, I included it alongside the other lesser-known/used nicknames.

Mostly they are known as the U's. Or "that little crappy insignificant team down the road" as we like to call them.

In 'the old days' you sometimes saw them called the 'Oystermen', maybe one word or maybe two, but it always seemed to me to be something used by people who wrote quizzes for Shoot! rather than anything anyone would actually say when walking into the pub and asking how the team got on. The 'Blue Eagle' was a fanzine, I guess in the late 70s and early 80s. But if anyone ever tried to get the name 'Eagles' to replace the U's as the club's nickname, you're certainly right that it never stuck. I have lots of programs from the early 70s (when Jim Smith, the Bald Eagle himself! was manager), and there is no mention of it there, even when the program had a cartoon eagle on the front. But I do take your point that possibly when a whole host of clubs, Town included, were prevented from using the borough arms as a badge that they may have tried to make a virtue of necessity by coining a more distinctive nickname. Probably by then Palace were already the Eagles. I wonder if that's when Derby became 'the Rams'. And I wonder if anyone tried to make Ipswich anything other than 'Town', or 'the Town'. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/392704856321 [Post edited 16 Oct 2023 18:10]
