I don't think you can make yourself "unavailable" for a FIFA or UEFA sanctioned tournament, unless you do what Luongo did & retire from international football. Otherwise, you can be prevented from playing for your club. |  |

Reading The EADT article, it sounds more like he's had a conversation with them to agree his position, rather than just declaring himself unavailable.
Really needs stating though, that him and Luongo are absolute heroes for the commitment to our promotion push above the opportunity to represent their countries at a tournament. |  |

At least Burgess plays for them and doesn't just sit on their bench. As a club we have far better cover for Burgess than the midfield duo. It is a risk for Burgess that if he goes he will lose his place and have to wait to get it back again. He could still withdraw as yet but I don't begrudge him wanting to play for his country. | |

Differnt scenario with him compared to Luongo and Morsy though, he’s just starting his international career, can’t blame him.
McKenna probably encouraged him to go as well, whereas may have helped ML and SM to not go as they’re at the other end of their international days. | |

Agree with what you’re saying, and understand why he wants to go, but for the exact reason you mentioned is why I think he should have stayed.
Personally think we’ll sign a centre back in January, we were after one on deadline day in the summer, think he might struggle to get his place back in the team, whereas at the moment, he’s probably the most favoured one we have, being left footed. | | | |

Burgess's family emigrated to Australia from Scotland when he was 11. He then joined the Fulham academy when he was 16 , funnily enough making his debut at PR when we beat them 2-1. His father is Scottish & he represented Scotland at U18 & U19 levels. He later switched his allegiance to Australia. Maybe he figured he had a better chance of playing full international football for them, who knows? If he hangs around the Asia Cup as a fringe player it will be frustrating. No wonder that the likes of Morsy & Luongo, like many other players in the Autumn of their careers, don't want the hassle of endless trips to join up with international squads as fringe players, with little meaningful game time in prospect. | |
