Hirst Out Through Christmas 14:27 - Nov 28 with 3476 viewsBellevue_Blue

Hirst has had another scan - 'not particularly great news'. Not exactly sure how long he'll be out, but certainly through Christmas ...

Could Kieran get inventive with Szmodics up top? Seems unlikely that Delap will start all 6 games in the next month.

Think Delap's gonna have to play them all, the drop-off without him is huge. But, yeah, I think I'd rather see SS up there than AAL if/when it comes to it.

Any free agents kicking about? Connor Wickham?

We don't have any free spaces in our 25 man squad, so unless the free transfer is under 21 (unlikely at this time of year) then were stuck with what we have until January now.

Time to start praying then.

Do you think it might be an acl injury?

Think Broady being back will help, we can rotate Clarke with Broady and maybe use Sammy as the front man

I wouldn’t rule out Broadhead playing that cameo role for 20 mins. He’ll be more effective than Al Hamadi and you don’t weaken the starting lineup by switching Szmodics.
That said I fully expect McKenna to rotate with 3 games this week,
I wouldn’t be surprised if Delap doesn’t start all 3 games.

Question, is this the same knee that he injured earlier in the season?

Suspect you're right, but Broadhead didn't convince when playing up front previously. Ideally we wouldn't switch Szmodics position, no, but he has more physicality and goal threat than Broadhead, so seems better suited. And NB/Clarke wouldn't be a huge drop-off from SS on the left.

I just can't see Kieran throwing Broady up there. Physically, I think he'd get eaten alive by PL centre halves, allied with the fact he's not played yet. Be throwing him under the bus. Szmodics seems the obvious choice - he played a lot as an out and out nine for Blackburn last season and would be able to match Delap's pressing.

Would Ogbene be deselected thus creating space, granted not sure any quality free agents would be available especially a CF and the conditioning would take a while to get up to speed.

Desperately sorry for the guy but his injury record is really becoming a problem now. Three major injuries in 2 seasons effectively.

Great shame for the lad who was just finding his feet but I think if we stay up we'll need to think about moving him on. His injury record is now costing us sadly :(

Equally, our failure to get a striker in the last two summer windows obviously hasn't helped either.

I doubt it's an ACL injury, not a rupture anyway. I ruptured mine many years ago and I couldn't walk in the immediate aftermath. Fortunately he was able to play on against Spurs after suffering the injury.

"he was able to play on against Spurs after suffering the injury." - if it was bad enough for him to be out for ~2 months, then he shouldn't have played on. He probably exacerbated it. Were no other strikers on the bench, and Szmodics had been subbed, but maybe should have thrown Chaplin up front, where he's played before, but was the physio's responsibility to relay the severity as much as McK's.

There's no bigger fan than me of everything about our setup and the fantastic people running the show, but I can't help thinking we leave players on when we shouldn't after an injury. At the same time I realise that I know fk all.

Don't want to be negative, but realistically we're going to run into problems if Hirst isn't back until the transfer window opens.

We've got 7 matches remaining this year (8 if you include Fulham) and not only does Delap need to stay fit and able to play 3 times a week, but he needs to avoid more than 1 booking.

Whatever his abilities, AAH clearly isn't fit and playing Szmodics up front in the PL is asking a lot.

KMc touched on this in his presser when he said injuries would dictate whether having a hectic December is a good thing.

Have you ever see him play that role? He's a completely different player for that 9 role and is very fragile and offers no physicality. Can't see it and he seems out of favour.
Let's not try and be nostalgic and try and shoe-horn an old favourite into the team. AAH is more a suitable fit to the role but in a Poundland way.

Agreed.

I really hope the awful refereeing decisions and injury crisis wont be what defines our season but have that in the back of my mind.

Delap on four bookings too. Not getting that extra striker in the door now looks to be coming back to haunt us.

An ACL would be the season, if it's cartilage, it would be about 8 weeks

We need someone off the bench who can hold up the ball, pick a pass, win headers and will read the game well. Step forward Mr Burgess….

We will lose Delap at some point in December. God forbid not to an injury, but highly likely to a suspension. And in order to prevent an injury we can't overuse him, so we need to manage his game time anyway.

Al-Hamadi is fine to bring on for ten minutes at the end of a game, but I just don't see him as a realistic starter in the Premier League. I'd love him to make me eat my words, but at this moment in time he's a lower Championship/upper League One striker for me. Getting him a decent loan in January has to be a priority.

Not getting that third striker in looks like it's going to cost us, but no point crying over spilt milk and it seems unfair to tar what was otherwise a highly successful transfer window with that particular brush. You can't win them all.

Broadhead is now key to us in December. Not to play up front, that didn't really work in the Championship, but to backfill Szmodics and alternate with Clarke as the left sided 10. He needs to step up. Szmodics is our only realistic option as a starter to replace Delap IMO.

In no way is this a criticism of McKenna or Ashton, but we do seem to go through a mini-crisis like this every winter. Last year it was not having a viable striker until getting Moore in after Hirst got injured and we'd sent Ladapo out on loan. The year before it was struggling in central midfield with an inexperienced Humphreys and Morsy on the edge of a ban after Evans got injured and we hadn't yet got Luongo in.

I guess that's just football in the winter. Almost like we need some kind of break...

Unless he is injured, he will play Al-Hamadi, maybe use Szmodics for the game Delap will miss through suspension.

I remember a pretty significant 'anyone but Jackson' movement early last year and he turned out to be a massive part of squad. Not great, but McKenna trusted him.

AAH isn't clearly fit, but equally is out of his depth in this league, not his fault, but the fact we're relying on him shows how not getting that additional striker in could be costly.

No surprise we went hard on the final day for Lath.

He's on 3 league bookings I think? Bookings are competition specific I think, so the one at Wimbledon doesn't count.

Think we'll be OK. We only realistically play three times in a week in the Christmas period where we play Newcastle/Arsenal/Chelsea(and probably expect 0 points from those).

I suppose we do have three games in the next 8 days or so, but then we have weekly breaks. The booking is of course the bigger issue and let's hope it doesn't come this weekend because it could be costly if he misses Palace at home.

Think we'll see Szmodics up top and Broadhead play his role if it comes to it, and i'd be OK with that. I definitely think Broady has something to offer and a point to prove, so let's hope he does.
