If we want to sign permanent players in January 13:58 - Dec 7 with 4389 views | MK1 | Then we are going to need to let a few go. Who would you let go? Harsh call on some who brought us here, but no sentiment in football. Hutchinson and Johnson seem more than capable for the front right, so perhaps Burns to Bristol City is a possible. Al-Hamadi isn't going to be a PL forward, so maybe a Championship side would like the option to take him. Chaplin isn't a PL 10, Portsmouth would love him back. And finally Luongo is unlikely to get much if any time for the rest of the season, so a club like Swansea would snap him up. Like I say, harsh, but reality needs to kick in if we are to stay up this season. Those 4 out with 4 improvements in and we have half a chance.

If we want to sign permanent players in January on 14:08 - Dec 7 with 3494 views | Cheltenham_Blue | "Al-Hamadi isn't going to be a PL forward" We signed him on a four and a half year contract literally to turn him into a top forward. And McKenna really seems to rate him. He's spent a good portion of his time with us carrying an injury and if we hadn't lost out on Broja and Nelson in the last hours, he'd currently get getting week in - week out minutes in the Championship which is his logical next step. I don't disagree that players will have to leave, but I'm eternally confused as to why some seem so quick to write off AAH when he's only 22 and has come from League 2 comparatively recently.

Why would he be getting Championship minutes every week? He was a punt and probably his most suitable level is League 1. Let's not kid ourselves.... AAH wasn't that great in the Championship. Let him earn the right to make it at the highest level. He's probably 2 divisions too high atm. Get him a loan move to L1 and let him develop. Like Cam Humphreys . who is a far better prospect than AAH IMO

The one that really surprises me on that list is Wolfenden I thought he might have had more minutes. It’s almost like KM has not seen enough over the last couple of seasons from him to think he can make the grade in the top division. I don’t think it will be more than 3 in so let Luongo go and enjoy playing football somewhere, loan out Ali and remove Ogbene from squad for rest of the season.

Several Championship teams wanted him in August, he just didn't go out on loan because we didn't bring our second striker in Whether that's his level is a different debate

If we want to sign permanent players in January on 15:21 - Dec 7 with 3168 views | jayessess | Find these threads have a tendency to get a bit ahead of themselves? The starting point seems to be "who don't I particularly rate" and then make a big list from that. But that's not the club's process at all which (generally) is to build the first team and then discard players who've been pushed down the pecking order. So, the real question is where would we look to reinforce our starting eleven and who would be surplus to requirements if we did. IMO we'll look for a right winger, but will still need Burns as backup. We'll look for a striker and send Al-Hamadi on loan. Can't see us getting more centre backs or centre midfielders (or getting rid of any). Could get a right back if Axel's injury is bad enough (but even then we're probably happy with Johnson as first choice there). We recruited twice in the left forward slot already, we surely aren't going to go there again? Mayne in the central 10 slot, I could see that pushing Chaplin down the pecking order.

I've gone more for a list of players who KM has already improved on in their positions so will either want to go as not playing.. luongo. Wolfenden. And players who we need to replace still with higher quality so we have 2 high quality in every position. So that's Burns. Taylor. Clarke. [Post edited 7 Dec 2024 15:27]

Whilst wolf hasn't played much we're not going to let him go unless we get a replacement in, which i don't think we'll be targeting in Jan as it's forwards we need

We'll definitely want a striker, possibly a right back as you say and if there was a third player, it's probably going to be a PL number 10 The hybrid nature of that floating creative/goal scoring player, might mean they can play on the right or left also

Woolfenden. So many people seem to forget the second O. For me, he's the most disrespected player full stop. Burgess has proven he's capable of covering and Woolfenden did nothing wrong in the opening three games before being ditched for O'Shea. I think there are two reasons he'll be let go - he pushes to leave or McKenna has had a falling out with him. Otherwise, I don't think we'll make any changes at centre back. My usual Woolfy rant aside, I think the issue is, if we let any squad player go, we'll have to replace him. Who's going to come in and take the place of our current lot, happy to sit on the bench but be an upgrade? Or will we be looking to upgrade on our summer signings and drop them to reserve? I can see a right winger coming in as a first teamer so that one definitely makes sense. Then a right back, with Tuanzebe long term injured and Johnson injury hit, and another striker. So Clarke (though I thought he was one of our best players against Palace) and Al Hamidi (again, he was better on Tuesday than against Manchester United) out with Ogbene dropped from the squad list. Central midfield is a possibility, though Morsy appears undroppable, suspension or injury aside, so any new signing will be fighting with Cajuste and Phillips for the remaining place. Therefore I imagine we may let one of Luongo or Taylor go, probably the former, and bring one new signing in.

I just feel there's something weird with the woolfenden thing. Clarke H isn't the best RB cover for the prem. So I was shocked we went there instead of O shea on the right with Wolfenden in the centre which tbh I don't think would have been a bad shout at all. Oshea probably would have had more success getting balls over the top for Burns too.

I think McKenna was burned against Everton, when we tried O'Shea - Woolfenden - Burgess - Davis and had no attacking support down the right, making it easy to pin us back, take Davis out of the game and isolate Hutchinson. Tuanzebe isn't the most attacking of full backs but the difference was still stark. If Woolfenden goes we will have to bring in a replacement.

Assuming we’re targeting a forward, 10, right winger and right back then: Third striker and we’re confident Hirst’s injuries are behind him - AAH goes out on loan Right winger because Ogbene isn’t going to be fit any time soon - de-register Ogbene New 10 - Luongo released Right back if Tuanzebe isn’t going to be back soon and Johnson is going to be used higher up - Burns potentially goes

I’d also like us to look to bring some younger players in who are under the age of registration. Some longer term punts from abroad maybe

It's amazing how quickly people forget how good McKenna is at developing players. The stick AAH has had since he had a slightly mixed 10 minutes cameo against Man Utd (having not played since GW2 I think?) is ridiculous.

Whilst true. The main stick was about fitness. But also. Yes he can develop players. But Al hamadi was set to go on loan. But also. We signed ahadme. And let ahadme go. So we don't always develop and keep. I do think Al hamadi was a player trading signing more than one who's gonna become a town star. A loan to a champ side. Score some goals. Sold for a profit.

Ahadme was a complete panic signing when we failed to get get our targets. The club took a punt but never saw him as a starter unless in emergency. In fairness, the same could be said of Al Hamidi.

I don't know if wolfy is happy to be left out. If he is. Then OK keep IF KM wants him around. On taylor. Not my job to find one. But I'm sure we will get one. Don't think taylor suits being a sub for the role he plays under KM.

Wolfenden is an injury to O'Shea away from being an automatic starter. Now way does he go. Taylor is getting game time from the bench. Agree with Burns and Al Hamadi. I think Luongo stays as well.

I think it speaks volumes that McKenna has elected to play O'Shea with a spine fracture, rather than put Woolfenden in the team. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him leave either in January window or the summer. I think Woolfenden is vastly overrated on here by some, and he's had a run in with McKenna re being left out of the squad and not wanting to travel to Man City away because he was left out of the squad. And IF the suggestion on here by someone else recently that he was also responsible for leaking the team selection ( God knows why he'd do that!!), thrn I'd say that definitely marks his card. Another player not listed on possible out the foor list, is Broadhead. Had we ven able to sign the striker we were after in August, he was definitely leaving. So I'd suggest he'll be on his way also. Town will definitely be looking to bring in 2-3 ayers and to do that, there will definitely be departures. It's logical that those who fail to nail down a regular place will be high on that list....
