I think what's most terrifying is the number of seemingly ordinary people who are totally on board with this and various other completely immoral and illegal actions that Trump is taking.
It makes sense to me that he wants to keep the social media oligarchy close to hand, these are the people who can influence people, normalise the abnormal and set the tone for what is/isn't appropriate.
Since Trump's first term as president there was something of a slow burning *normalisation* of what the documentarian Adam Curtis describes as hyper-normalisation, but this is happening at such rapid rate this time around that it's hard to keep up.
I was re-watching Andor the other night and this quote really felt pertinent.

An update by the UN humanitarian office in January showed that less than a quarter of the pre-war water supplies were available, while at least 68% of the road network has been damaged.
Palestinian data shows that the conflict has led to the destruction of over 200 government facilities, 136 schools and universities, 823 mosques and three churches. It doesn't take long to destroy the reputation of a nation, and it's never completely rebuilt.
Plenty of people around the world still revile the UK or 'England' because of the Empire phase, despite much good work in the last century or longer.
Many, perhaps a majority of, my grandparents' generation absolutely loathed Germany and equated it with the Nazis until their dying day and passed some of that down to my parents' generation. It still sits there, doesn't it, in some of us to a greater or lesser degree. It hasn't gone.

Tho Trump does seem to be operating the "say something extreme, then when everyone's running around in panic and making concessions, draw back and take the gains" school of diplomacy. Of all the things he has come out with recently, and I probably shouldn't rank them, but this maybe the worst. The idea he can end a deeply bitter conflict by evicting millions of people and building apartments is obscene and absurd.
This could be the end of Nato if the western leaders take the stance they should. And sadly it could rupture the UK/US relationship. And then we have no friends on the world stage. But sometimes you have to draw a line.
