This season has been weird. 17:07 - Mar 11 with 5084 views | Linners | There are 10 games left, and my overriding emotion is that I'm looking forward to it being over...but there's no doubt that there is something a bit special about the showbiz football in the PL. A bit like going out with a supermodel and their friends every weekend. Might be nice to have another go in a year or two..?
This season has been weird. on 17:15 - Mar 11 with 4258 views | J2BLUE | It's become a circus. I'm glad we got promoted. I hope we survive just to stick it to pundits writing us off but other than that i'd be happy competing at the top of the Championship yoyo-ing up and down. I dread to think what a super league would be like.

I don't actually think many people would watch a Super League. I really don't. When there is no jeopardy involved, what is sport? I know, the NFL etc. doesn't really have it, but in England/Europe, we're conditioned to having jeopardy.

Exactly this. A closed shop “super league” will be dull as fk. I mean, the prem league is halfway there already such is the imbalance of finances.

I suspect it would be extremely popular with Man Utd/Liverpool/etc supporters who've never been to the ground/city/country and couldn't find any of those on a map.

Sadly it's not for the England/Europe market. Destination Entertainment Hyper-bowls crammed with tourist stuffing their faces with gourmet popcorn beaming to giddy Asian and Middle East markets. Owners and fat cats drowning in money but still seeking new ways to spread the "beautiful game" to new savage territories.

I actually hope it happens. Let the top six go and leave the proper game to the rest of us, football can have a re-set and become a slightly more even playing field.

Hence why this season is dull. Past two years it has been a closed shop effectively. I don't see anyone promoted staying up next year. If Wolves had sacked their manager earlier they'd likely be on 33-35 points right now.

This season has been weird. on 07:56 - Mar 12 with 3200 views | Churchman | I want the season over too. It’s been interesting but I’ve hated the structural uncompetitiveness of it and watching my team losing every week is no fun in previous bad seasons and isn’t now. It’s hard to look forward to games when you pretty much know the outcome and pattern. I have detested the cardboard arch, shaking hands before trying to get a player sent off (Cucurella), plastic PL music, plastic away support, silly fireworks and the sheer grotesqueness. It’s not football as I know it. But to completely contradict myself, I never thought I’d see this club anywhere near the Premier League again. It was some moment when they walked out against Liverpool. I’ve loved seeing the ground full and looking smart too. The standard of football at this level is off the scale. I want us to be in this league. To be the best we can be. I’m not expecting the club to build a new stadium for £2bn that looks like a French dessert or to compete with the likes of Arsenal and Man City but why not with the Forests, Brightons, Fulhams and West Hams? That should be our ambition. We can achieve that. I am gutted that in all likelihood we will get booted out and that we’ve fallen so far short. But the players and club have given their best A lot of money (for us) has been spent and I’m happy we’ve given it a go. Not trying and not knowing what might have been would have been awful and in football context cowardly.. I just hope that the club has prepared properly for all eventualities and learns from this. Onwards and upwards.
This season has been weird. on 08:46 - Mar 12 with 3095 views | Herbivore | The quality of football at times has been ridiculous and seeing us largely compete in most games has been positive, it shows we've come a long way. But we've not come far enough and that's largely down to the structural unfairness of the Prem and it's not likely to get better any time soon. I'll be sad if we go down but there's an awful lot of stuff I'm not going to miss about the Prem.

The talk is about a new "EPL" separate from the EFL with no promotion or relegation made up of fewer teams. They will invest in the EFL if the EFL accepts U23s from the Premier League in their system. Football in 20 years is going to be different.

Yeah totally. This is what I have been warning about us making sure to boycott the Pizza Cup a few seasons ago because of the brands involvement! This is their dream. It's certainly not mine though - after near fifty years that would finally be it for me if it happens. I'd rather EFL became non-league standard facilities and retain competitiveness and dignity than that. Sadly it feels only too realistic a scenario. To be honest this season has just confirmed how dead football is. Make sure every big team 'supporter' you know knows it that they're already in their super league. I was just telling a (genuine - as in 'from the place and went last night') Liverpool fan today about how I couldn't be bothered to go away to their place last month to a foregone conclusion and he nodded sadly. Might as well put Tyson Fury up against my gran. Winning a league of one or two instead of against nineteen other teams is not exactly satisfying for the proper ones either.

I get that people are saying this is becoming a trend but I am not convinced. I can see Leeds and/or Burnley staying up in very different ways. Leeds would spend and have to get it right. Burnley will furstrate, play very negative and dull football but could do enough if luck goes their way. Our job is to make sure we build a team that is ready to play in the Premier League. We haven't done that leading up to this season but that shouldn't really surprise anyone.

Something I hate is the cardboard signs that say 'Rashford, I've come from Canada, can I have your jersey?' Don't get that at Portsmouth away in the league cup.

Indeed. If you have taken the trouble to arrange a trip from Canada, you should at least be able to get a glossy printed sign asking for it.

Interesting point. Because of where I park normally I don’t get to see much of the away supporters close up. However I did at the Chelsea game. Walking through Portman Rd, aside from the usual cadre of lobotomised Chelsea crustaceans, I was surprised at the numbers of people from the far east and other parts of the world. Football tourists, essentially. There’s nothing wrong with it in that if people pay their money for ‘the Chelsea experience’, so be it. But you can see where top level football is going and how pricing out ‘traditional’ support is no problem for the big boys. Neither is playing in a super league and across the world if that’s the paying customers are coming from. As it stands, the game in this country is going to look a lot different in ten years time, in my view. Time will tell.

Lobotomised Chelsea crustaceans is a great name for a band! Spurs had loads of Korean fans in the away end. As you say, the promised land is being increasingly geared up for cash rich footballer consumers to the detriment of the permanent 'come what may' fans. People obviously argue on here but the consistency of people's permanent love and commitment to the club is amazing. I'd rather be at Preston away with 2,000 fans who are just mad for it than sat next to thinly veiled Liverpool and Chelsea fans who have £200 to buy a ticket at Portman Rd.

Agree with this. I think the key is not stagnating for too long in any division. Don't want to be like Palace or Preston for example, as the only way is down as we found out during our 17 year stint in the Championship. Assuming we're relegated, it's important we return to the PL in the first two seasons before our parachute payments run out.

I hope you are right and think Leeds will make a better go if it than us but Burnley I see coming back down along with Sheff Utd. At least one team is going to have to have a hell of a shocker for anyone to stay up. Statistically this year's bottom 3 is the worst ever despite two being recently relegated and one spending £150m. The trend of the last two years is undeniable.
