New contract in the summer or call it a day?

Poll: If forced to sell one of the following this summer, who would you sell?

Wanted by Cardiff City, which would be a good outcome for all parties i suspect.

Yes - getting a big signing on bonus as a free agent with a longer contract than we would want to offer him must be a big draw - despite the emotional attachment he clearly has for us.

Boyhood club. Makes a lot of sense if he can get a 3 year deal there, then finish up at Newport or somewhere.

Seeing as we're now promoted... I think maybe a 1 year extension, at best. I think Wes might want longer.

If we had failed to get promoted, I'd give him a 2 year extension.

Going to the MLS I heard.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

I'd give him 2 years. He is 31, hardly ancient, and no one knows the McKenna RAM role like he does. His connection with the fans also shouldn't be discounted.

From a purely sentimental point of view, I'm sure he would love another crack at the prem after his injury last time around. He was the only attacking player from the 22-24 squad not to get a prem goal and he deserves a chance to put that right.

We've spent the best part of £40m improving that area of the team and he's still our best option there.
He's not just about pace anymore. The timing of his runs and his directness with his end product mean he's got some good years left. Get him signed up for the next 2 or 3 years imo.

What an incredible player he's been for us, I love the bloke.

Agreed. I'd give him another two.

Love Wes to bits and he spoke really well after the match, but it's case of reality before emotions for me.

A manager's dream - a player you can depend on and trust to work hard and do the job. Sadly though, his best days are behind him now. I don't see him getting back to the player he once was here. If we do get promoted, we will need better quality than Burns to have a better chance at staying up.

He has been brilliant for us, but I do think we will part ways this summer. However, if we do stay in the Championship, I wouldn't be surprised if he was offered a new deal - though the length of that deal I would guess at being a maximum of 2 years (possibly 1 year + a 1 year option depending on X appearances).

I think we have to be realistic rather than sentimental.

Giving him 2 years this summer would leave him in a tricky situation in 2028. Aged 34 and most people perceiving him to be 'finished' as a flying winger, no doubt. If he can get 3+ years somewhere, I'd jump at it if I was him. Let's be honest, we *do* need better than Wes if we're to genuinely stay up in the PL. As much of a legend he is, promotion for both parties feels like the perfect way to say goodbye.

I would be more than happy to keep him around the squad but sounds like he has some decent options in the summer.

I'd offer two years on the assumption he wouldn't accept one. We do need better but we also need squad players who the manager can trust and players with a bit of pace and physicality.

Not sure why he would automatically be finished just because he's 34.

My answer a year ago would have been different but I've been so impressed by Burns impact coming back. He's a really good player and physically he hasn't lost anything since coming back. At 31 he has to be worth a new 2 year contract. Look at the money spent trying to replace him. It isn't easy and it costs a lot.

I honestly think he is a fantastic squad player to call on even in the prem.

I think perhaps he is moving on but I would try and keep him. We will need to buy another RM/Winger still though for sure. High pedigree.

Walle Egeli may need to be loaned out next season though he might suit the prem more weirdly. It's less chaotic and more technical.

If he could stay fit I would 100% have him as an option in PL.

Difficult

Going into summer we've got

Ogbene, Burns, Egeli, Mcateer And that's before we go shopping

With respect to all of them, I don;t see a prem starting RW in that.

Still our best right sided player. I'd keep him on another season, plus a fan favourite.

I think two things (which contradict each other a bit) and they are that a) he's a club hero who has earned the right to do what's best for him and I don't think we'll be able to offer him a deal that secures him 3/4 years at this stage of his career and b) I think he's our most effective RW at the club still.

Being a bit cold-hearted about it you'd expect that we'd not want to go into a Prem season with Burns and McAteer as our wide options there and so one has to leave, and sadly Burns probably has to be the odd one out.

I think you are right but id much rather give Burns a 2 year deal and move on from Mcateer but just don't think the logistics of that work

If anyone has earned the Sone-Aluko-Ashley-Young-Saga-Squad-Place for footballers approaching retirement, it's Wes Burns.

Think he still has far more to offer than those two ever did/have when given that role.

Appreciate that this semi-retirement role is more valuable in a PL squad but we are currently a better team with Burns in it.

100% we should be giving him a new contract.

He might be the wrong side of 30, and he might have suffered a bit with injuries the past 2 seasons, but he is still by far our most effective RW option.

The timing of his runs, his physicality, his ability on the ball, his goal threat, his game is about much more than pace. He always steps up in the big moments too. Says a lot that KM chucked him in from the start yesterday.

Spent alot of his time at Fleetwood in a hybrid RWB role, I wonder if maybe we could move him back, he certainly has the game for it.

In a summer where there is inevitably going to be huge turnaround in players, he's a low cost, low maintenance option who knows the system, knows the team, and is loved by the fans. Sign him up.

A fit and firing Wes is a very decent back up at worse in the PL. He's currently our best RW option despite all the money we've spent. I'd 100% give him a 1 or even 2 year deal personally.

Burns on 12:25 - Apr 29 with 978 views_CliveBaker_

I would. A bit of continuity isn't a bad thing and McKenna likes to have a few of those senior heads around the place. Keogh, Aluko, Young. He's clearly well respected and part of that leadership group, and at 31 still has some football in him. I'd definitely try to keep him around.

I can't see it though. Maybe we're waiting to see what division we'll be in, but I would think the deal would be done by now if he's staying.

You can just see last night, he's our best player at right wing. He's direct and takes on defenders, and of course can score goals.

We've tried to "replace" him with a number of players and the current one's still don't offer as much as he does. I suspect we try and do it again in the summer.

I'd offer him a contract but obviously he might want to actually play regularly or have a longer contract etc.
