Jewell Apologises for Worst Defeat in Management Saturday, 20th Aug 2011 20:26
Boss Paul Jewell apologised to fans after his worst defeat in management as nine-man Town were hammered 7-1 at Peterborough. The Blues manager refused to blame a number of questionable refereeing decisions for the severity of the loss.
Jewell said: “I think that’s worst defeat I’ve suffered as a manager. For 12 minutes I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Well, I could believe what I was seeing because it’s happened too often, and obviously the 45 second minutes was the longest 45 minutes of my football life.
“It was damage limitation at half-time. We had nine men, they were playing with superb confidence and popping the ball around. We were just trying to keep the score down.”
The Blues boss refused to blame a number of contentious decisions by referee Graham Scott: “I’m definitely not going to hide after a 7-1 defeat and blame it on the referee.
“Someone just said that three of their goals were offside and the penalty was outside the box. That might be true, but it doesn’t hide what’s going on in our team and the defending was of shambolic proportions.
“I’ll take responsibility, I’m the manager, I pick the team, so I’m not hiding behind anything else. I’ll take it on the chin, I’ll get my tin hat on and fight through it and try and get people in there who are worthy of playing for us because there are too many people who are not good enough or worthy to play for us.”
Jewell says the results in the last week are as poor as they come: “I don’t think too many teams can have conceded 12 goals in five days and it’s hugely embarrassing and it’s really, really hurting me. But what can I do? I’ve just got to try and bounce back tomorrow and try and get people in the building.
“Some of the goals we concede are just ridiculous. The last goal sums us up. The guy’s gone through three challenges and has just brushed us off. When it becomes physical, when it comes down to the nitty-gritty, the white flag comes out.
“Whenever we come under pressure, we collapse. Anyone who has seen us over the last couple of years will have seen that as soon as it gets tough to many go missing.”
Jewell apologised to supporters and promised that he will turn things around: “I’m hugely embarrassed and I’m sorry. They’ve been fantastic for this club. I’ll take it on the chin, I know it’s down to me. I’m hurting every bit as much as they are.
“They were singing ‘we want our money back’ and they deserve it. These fans that turn up week-in and week-out, home and away, they deserve better. I think I deserve better than what I’m getting from the players as well. I’m determined that we will eventually get it right.”
Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson was unsurprisingly delighted: “It was as comfortable as it could possibly be when they went down to nine men, but even before that the most pleasing thing for me was the first half because for 20 minutes we just carved them open and got four quick goals.”

Worth looking at the Leeds Boards. They aren't going to be happy unless they put 10 past us in the next game. Chants from the start will be "We want 10". DREADFUL. No other words to describe our defending. Right now I would play my 2 dogs in Central Defence over our 2 guys tonight. At least they would get involved and put up a fight for the ball. Terry Butcher would never have allowed Ainsley to play like that and would have kicked him into touch himself for making so many simple mistakes.

The worst performance I have ever seen, truely gutless, pathetic.watched these for 25 years and never seen anything worse.this talk from manager is getting cheap, same ol crap getting boring.at this rate at least 8 or 9 players needed just to avoid relegation.Got critised on here saying mid-table mediocricy at best seems at the moment that is just a pipe dream! We have to keep the faith but its getting tough!

Shocking performance and whilst the referee did'nt do much better! A right back and two decent centre halfs have to brought in now Evans. Cough up the money or watch your investment disappear down the toilet!!

There is only one team worse than Ipswich in England at the moment - and that is India

We thought we were getting Wigan Paul Jewell but clearly we've got Derby Paul Jewell. Tuesday and today were unforgiveable and we can blame the players as much as we want but you have to look at the last few performances (Norwich, Leicester, Soton, Peterboro) to realise that Jewell hasn't got a clue and it's just a matter of time before he has to go. When I look back to the EADT editor calling for Magic's head I thought our club could only move forward from then, but we have gone backwards even since those days. We are a shambles.

The same thing is being in different ways; poor manager, poor players, no committment, no hope! Our club needs to change! we must stop being a 'nice' club trying to play 'nice' football. We need to man up! develop an ethos of playing hard - on and off the pitch! Jewell needs to move on - the nucleous of the team are his signings, I don't rate any of them personally, we need a winning manager in NOW! So who's availalbe? Forget new signings - bust the bank to get a manager like Martin O'Neil & let him 'manage' what's there. I see no point bringing in more players if the current manager can't get them to perform? Any views?

How bad were Aisnley and Delaney? Didn't think it was possible to have a worse team than Smith and Delaney. Total DROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get this sorted out now! Leadbitter= SELL HIM- NOT FIT TO WEAR HIS SHIRT We made Peterborough look like Barcelona. We are the laughing stock of the league with our comical defending. Smith - absolutely deserved his red card. Martin- not so sure.

What did people expect with the team we put out against the Posh? We were all expecting to lose, just all of us were shocked how badly we lost. 3-0 would have been respectable. They are much better than us though and deserved their mammoth score. I feel ok about the result. It could have easily been 15 or 16-1.

Maybe McAuley & Norris were better than we gave them credit for? We need a holding midfielder in front of our defence, even if we do eventually get a proper RB & two CB's. It concerned me on Tuesday night that JET did not win one single header & he faired not much better today. We need to keep the ball. We give it away too easily and let's face it, Southampton & Peterborough put their teams together in League One and are not that good. We made them look good. Leeds will eat us. How absolutely depressing. Come on PJ!

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to watch it on TV from here in Afghanistan. Very happy right now that Im a long way away from Ipswich. Utterly embarassing. Smith, Delaney, Ainsley should never play for us again. Not good enough! And leadbitter.....lets take the Pompey offer. Use any money made towards offering Bullard a contract.

Whilst I'm gutted and ashamed of tonights performance you can NOT Sack your manager 4 games into a season. As a team it's not working at all. The defending is shocking I've seen better on a local Sunday team, There are players in midfield that are poor IE Leadbitter. I do feel for Chops as we know he is a quality player but is not getting any service and is feeding on scraps. Evans needs to open his pockets we HAVE TO HAVE A RB, CBx2 And Bullard maybe a striker in January. In my opnion these players are PJ Best signings so far: Stockdale-Felt sorry for him today. Cresswell- looks bright and will shine in a better defence Andrews-really impressed so far should be captain and try and sign on perm deal. JET- Still feel the best is still yet to come. Chopra-Will be the 20 goal man we are looking for. Negative signings so far Bowyer- looks unfit and a shadow of former player Ellington- Hasn't played much but when featured offered very little. Inigarson- Injury prone but maybe solid if fit.

The players should be ashamed in the performance which was witnessed by people all over the world like many who have already said delaney, smith and edwards should be shown the door and if portsmouth want leadbitter your welcome to him and as for jewell stop with the excuses and sign some centre halves who will spill blood for the blue shirt of town like the beat and butch and marcus evans should refund the people who witnessed that rubbish

Remember when Gordon Brown said 'I take full responsibility. That's why the person who was responsible went immediately.' They're all decent championship players with organisation and leadership they shouldn't be losing 2-5 and 7-1.
