Jewell: Better Side But Lacked Cutting Edge Saturday, 15th Sep 2012 17:51 Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his team were the better side at the Riverside despite falling to a 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough. Town created plenty of chances and the Liverpudlian was disappointed his team failed to take any of them.
Jewell said: “I thought we were the better team, I thought we played good football, we just lacked the cutting edge today inside the box. We’ve had lots of shots, played lots of quality football, had good possession, the only thing that was missing was goals.
“We created plenty of openings and we don’t make the most of them, real gilt-edged chances, through really good football.
“We had 17 shots on goal throughout the game, but we haven’t made their goalkeeper work hard enough, hence the reason we didn’t win the game.”
The Town manager was disappointed with Boro’s first goal which came after Andy Drury’s misplaced pass midway inside his own half: “It was a sloppy ball in midfield.
"The lad [Luke Williams] finished it really well, you can’t take the finish away from him. We had good possession in the middle of the park, we lost it and the next thing we’re a goal down.”
Jewell’s side pushed for the equaliser in the latter stages before being caught on the counter-attack for the Teessiders’ second goal but he thought his team deserved more for their performance: “The story of the second half is that we piled forward, they were trying to hit us on the break.
“We kept going, we tried to keep playing, but the ball didn’t drop for us in the box today. I’m not one to blame bad luck but the bounce of the ball just didn’t fall our way.
“We tried fresh legs late on and I thought the team, everyone who came on the pitch, played their part.
“OK, we’ve lost 2-0 and people will look at the result but you’ve got to look deeper than the result at this stage of the season.
“I thought some of our play was excellent and if we’d have come away with a point we would have been disappointed. To get nothing, we’re doubly disappointed.”
Jewell said he’d comment on whether he would be pursuing his interest in German trialist Kevin Pezzoni in the week.
Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray admitted his side had been given a difficult afternoon: “You have to say Ipswich played very well.
“Ipswich have got a history of being good with the ball, I was there for nine years and the coaching and the philosophy and the expectation at that club is that they take care of the ball, and I think they showed that today.
“They probably lacked a bit of a cutting edge. I thought Jonathan Woodgate and Andre Bikey and Jason Steele were very good today and yet, while Ipswich might be disappointed because they played well, we’ve won the game 2-0 and you can’t be dominant every game.
“There have been some occasions when we’ve lost and been dominant with the ball and I’m happy enough to take the points.”

It's very, VERY boring and patronising to hear the same, lame excuses from PJ each and every week. I have to admit that Town won't get one single penny from me while this inept donkey is in charge...

Well done, unfortunate score line. Looks like the team is going in the right direction, shame it's a rather slow upward curve. If we could have put away one of the 5 or 6 good chances we'd have been alright. Glad to see the middle third doing well.

So... we have good player's (sort of) ... But we can't find the right system? I'm not sure what this week will bring. I always liked Paul Jewell but his record isn't great aside from at Bradford.... and if I remember correctly he quit and they stayed up? I will never be calling for a manager to leave.. let's stick with him while he's here. There are a lot of teams in this division better than us, and whilst it's frustrating no one team has any divine right to beat everybody else, I don't know the answer?

" I thoughtbwenwere the better team " WE LOST ! Football is simple. The team who scores the most goals wins. Just what have we been doing on the training field every day? Suggest we start to teach our defends how to defend and our strikers to score.

So at what point will evans say enough is enough and get a proper manager in charge who knows how to build a football team. For Jewell not sorting out the back 4 before the start of season is poor management at the very least, if i ran ipswich i would of sacked him for that alone. We should of got rid after losing 8 in a row last season but no, instead we continue to pay our money to watch a dreadful football team and somehow this is exceptable. Jewell out, he has been given enough time. Please hurry up aswell before our season is over.

Bye jewell sick of the same rubbish. Go & leave us with a chance to bring in a manager to put fire in the belly & make itfc fans proud once more. Mick Mccarthy is the man. He was a kick ass defender & his managerial career superior to pj. Imo.

...... when we are relegated - PJ will still be saying 'we were the better team'. No way would he ever get away with his pathetic repetitive post match drawl after a defeat, at any other League Club. We are a 'pathetic shambles' - with no care being shown by 'The Three Musketeers' as to the decaying status of the Club. Keep coughing up, listen to the pre season drivel, and buy your season ticket every year - and be assured it will continue.

It all looked so positive after the first two games. Still, we are only 5 games in and I'm still hopeful things will go well this season. It's a bit early in the seson to call for Jewell's head, a win today would put us 1 point off the play-off's and everyone's perception would have changed. Come on Paul and the team, we're all supporting you to get back on track on Wednesday!

...... whoever (of the Three Musketeers) is, individually or collectively, responsible for this state of affairs - Is it too much to ask that they have the interests of the proud name of IPSWICH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB at heart ? - AND SORT IT - or GET OUT completely.

I don't think out problem scoring goals is due to the strikers (beyond the obvious). We're lacking decent balls in, there's no pace down the wings apart from an off-form JET. There are no strong leaders in the team - people who play with that little bit of extra passion and wear their heart on their sleeve.

Anyone who still thinks we have the right manager please explain why!

You can always take positives out of a game but we were ultimately well beaten today. Quite frankly we are starting to look out of our depth in this division and we need points soon. Two home games to come next week but we will need to improve dramatically to get much out of Wolves if today's performance is the yardstick. Thus in a real sense the Charlton game could be a make or break match and still in September too. This is so depressing; it's getting more and more difficult to see what can be done to improve matters without fundamental change in the management team. Ultimately though the players currently being selected to represent the club are not performing, certainly not as a team. Whether anyone else can do better with this set of players remains to be seen.

ITS noel the moan, now could i not moan its our strikers now 16 or 17 shots no cutting edge, whos going to get the blame on wed.IF you dont concede you wont lose get it into your brain we cant defend as a team.If you keep bringing in midfielders or strikers this problem will send us down,if we do score 3 or 4 we will let in as many get it sorted pj because every week it will be like listening to a tape..

The stark reality of the situation is that we are no further forward since Keane's dismissal. If anything we are in a worse situation. At least Keane's team was relatively solid at the back, if a little impotent in front of goal. Now we leak goals and can't score them. In Jewell's defence, he has his hands tied financially and struggles to land the players he wants. But if the club is really trying to cut costs then we should be scouting for players in the lower leagues and/or abroad, where promising players can be found with lower wage demands. Instead Jewell looks towards Premier League fringe players and journeymen who are clearly unobtainable. This is Jewell's team now and his mess. The sense of despair is palpable amongst manager and fans alike. This club has regressed massively since the Magilton era, both on and off the field. I've never felt so disillusioned and helpless as a Town fan of 25 years. Sad times.
