So the Rotherham players didn't think Campbell-Ryce played that well. I recall at the time it happened, he didn't track back, got loads of grief from his team mates but looked absolutely superb every time he got on the ball. But which players genuinely would have deserved a standing ovation at Portman Road over the years? I remember Waddle being unplayable when Sheffield Wednesday beat us (2-0 I think on the opening day of the season about 1990?). Glenn Hoddle was unreal when Swindon beat us 4-1 in 1991. Aiden Davidson had a worldy for Millwall when we drew 0-0 around 1996 (might have been the day we missed the playoffs and they went down). Ashley Young was relentless when Watford won down here when he was about 19 and playing on the RW and must have weighed about 8 stone. Seedorf was fantastic for Inter Milan. Ian Wright was different class when he scored a hat trick when we lost 5-1.

Klinsmann v Spurs 1994.

Kevin Wilson playing for Derby against us in around '84. So good, we signed him.

Was about to say Klinsmann!

3-1 defeat under the lights I believe and Kilnsmann got an ovation from all 4 stands if I recall?

Junior Bent. If you know, you know.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Hoddle and Hazard destroyed us when SWindon beat us 4-1 at Portman Road.
Also Spurs beat us 3-1 at Portman Road when they had the famous five up front that season. They were 3up at halftime until they eased off second half, I think they could have hit 6 or 7 if they went for it all game. Illie Dumistrecu was world class that night.

A real recent one. - Glen Whelan, absolutely bossed the game when Villa thumped us the other month. I genuinely don’t think he gave the ball away once, just sat in front of the back four and picked the ball up, spraying passes left right and centre.

Really showed what a comfortable ball-playing defensive mid is capable of.

Andy Reid for Forest, possibly in 02/03 or just a little later when he was still a teenager and pretty well unknown. He was different class that day.

Slightly different, I remember when Villa came to Town in 2000 (the game Nilis suffered the awful injury) and David James was in goal. He looked immense and I just couldnt see us ever beating him.* Cant remember seeing a keeper since who looked such an obstacle.

*Although we lost 2-1 so we did beat him - I think we scored a late late consolation?

Dean Ashton got a hat-trick in a pre-season for West Ham. Despite his Nardge spell, I still feel sorry for the way injuries finished his career. He could well have been the player that Kane got compared against.o

Dean Gerken for Bristol City in a 0-0 a few years back. Looked unbeatable.

Whelan is decent. But it became easy for him and Villa after we were down to 10 men, up until the sending off I thought we'd matched them pretty well.

I thought Grealish was far better than Whelan tbh

Hoddle's Swindon side were really good to watch, he had a good game for them, but, if memory serves me correctly a significantly younger version of "the Hod" had a cracking game for Spurs @ PR one year,

Wright always seemed to tear us apart, be it for Paliss or Arsenal. He got a standing ovation at John Wark testimonial when he was substituted.

Sure Mark Bright also always had good games against us.

I believe the Town v Spurs match that you refer to was the one at PR circa Nov 1984. Spurs won 3-0, and Hoddle was absolutely unplayable. One of the best individual performances I think I've ever seen.

The first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title. Hoddle for Swindon, we won the league that year but they did us 4-1 at home and gave us a schooling. I was at the front of Churchmans and could hear him shouting and gesturing about where they should move, he's swing the ball over and Bang! A footballing masterclass.

I only saw it on the telly, but Paolo Di Canio was most definitely "on it" when West Ham beat us 3-2 at Portman Road in October 2001.

Sean Scannell and Wilf Zaha gave us a lot of trouble a few times.

Not at PR but I remember going to the 5-0 away defeat against Palace a few years back concerned about Zaha, and instead it was Yannick Bolasie - a player who until then I hadn’t thought a great deal of - who absolutely tore us a new one

He’s done ok since

I remember seeing Michael Carrick down here when he was a youngster with West Ham. Can only have been a teenager but was head and shoulders above everyone on the pitch that day. Class.

Can remember Campbell-Ryce's performance that night well, always stuck in my mind as it was the first time I'd ever seen PR give an ovation to an opposition player like that. They were pretty much already down so I remember expecting us to walk that game but he was tearing us apart until he got taken off. Always surprised me that he never kicked on to play at a higher level rather than spending the rest of his career down the leagues but I guess that must have just been a stand out game for him.

Can remember being really impressed with a young Leighton Baines around that time too, scored a worldy against us for Wigan just before Christmas when we beat them to go top.

Another one for David James, although a different game. Early in his career for Watford, maybe the 90/91 season. Was superb.

Additionally Franz Carr for Forest in the late 80s tore us a new one.

Away from home Vieri is still the best striker's performance I've ever seen against us.

Vieri tore us apart in Milan, I was always irked Burley went with Naylor up top on that day, whilst resting Sixto and Pablo who were more suited to playing against continental types.

David James also had a blinder against us for Pompey in the FA cup when we were down to 10 men.

I was going to mention him. Not just his physical presence and confidence, but I don’t think he stopped barking at his defence all game.

I remember seeing Ruud Gullit play at PR against us for Chelsea in a league cup game in the mid to late 90s. Serious class.

EDIT - in the 2 times I've seen him down PR with Fulham, he's never looked like he's got out of second gear.
