It was just an example.

I said to my mate a few weeks back I’d play if 20/1 came anywhere. Only Skybet have priced it so far as I’ve seen and they went 12s.

Whilst they clearly aren’t likely to get top 4, I’d back it if the price was right.

That was the point I was making to spruce. Him mentioning that Poland 66/1 bet as evidence to betting is something that I just had to point out.

I never made them one of the favourites. I made them a value bet at 66/1. There’s a difference. Ok I was wrong and they were atrocious. But I’d still say it was a value bet.

I don’t think Wolves are favourites for top 4 next season. However, at 12/1, I think that’s an ok price. That’s just an example but you see my point.

"But I’d still say it was a value bet"

How on earth was it a value bet if they got home before the post cards?

It’s not that I don’t think it could not happen. Obviously I wouldn’t do that but the price is vital in bets that COULD happen.

I don’t think Portsmouth will qualify ahead of Sunderland tonight. It’s possible. If someone went 10/1 on Pompey to qualify, I’d back it. Because that is a value price.

I don't think Portsmouth will qualify ahead of Sunderland tonight either especially as they do not play until tomorrow.

Because it was 66/1. Each way, I thought that was overpriced.

Play the tournament 66 times and I think they’d make the final at least once.*

Value in football is harder to find tbf so I could just be wrong. I just thought it was a big price at the time for a team with one of the best strikers in the world, we’re unbeaten in a year and were in the top 10 ranking in the world.

*Obviously we will never know.

Here’s a better example...

Heads or tails. I usually chose tails. It’s a 50/50 even chance. So 1/1 (Evens) is the bet.

If someone offered me 3/1 on heads (despite me fancying tails to win as I always do), I’d bet the heads. As it’s value. You see?

I find it one of the great paradoxes of the board that harmful activities such as gambling can be freely promoted and encouraged, but you can't swear. Madness!

The gambling talk and adverts on here debate has happened plenty of times. I’m sure we don’t need it again.

It’s Phils site and he’s happy with it (hence sticking my racing threads 11 times a year) so I suppose that’s the most important element innit.

I’m off out now anyway so I bid you all farewell for the evening. X

That's not my point! Maybe I'm wrong, but I recall the inability to swear on here being put down to the fact that kids use this site. If that's the case, I'm not sure they should have gambling waved under their nose either.

I don't care about kids. I just want to be able to say chunt without the H.

He's definitely spiky. Doubt he'd get 30 goals or anything like that but would give us an edge we've missed up there and, by the looks of it, make space for our midfielders and wide men to get into good areas. We've struggled for that.

Very good early signing this if it comes off, like it a lot. Been pretty impressed with him in what i've seen. Reckon PL will be in the market for a target man too to mix it up a bit.

Good signing on a free. He's in his prime and has so eying about him. Not sure he'd be up to the Championship but we don't need him to be, not yet at least. Need one more striker in addition to Norwood and a couple of full-backs and we'll be sorted.

It's called taking value. I used to have the same mentality you do and dismiss anyone who spoke of value. My betting has got a lot better since I started looking at value selections.

‘As big a coup as you can get as a League 1 club’

Sunderland spent £6m on Will Grigg this season

He looks to be a good signing but let’s not go nuts here

EDIT: I appear to inflated this fee in my mind, it was just the £4m

Huge difference between betting on something you think there’s a chance of happening, and putting money on things like Wolves making the top 4 or Poland winning the World Cup though surely?
