grow up in a rich family?

Talking 4 holidays a year including skiing, every Sunday at Le Talbooth, privately educated type thing.

What was it like?

There is rich and there is rich, isn't there?

I would have said yes to the first question. However, it is then no, no and yes.

Privately educated to believe I was better than poor people and taught to vote Conservative. It took me some time to learn what the world is really like.

Never that posh fella! I was sent to a comprehensive school (which my mum deeply regrets, but she was sticking to principals).

We did have a cottage in norfolk though - hence been a canaries fan and not a gooner. My guilty secret.

However, they both worked for the beeb and I had a nanny.

Go on, stick it to me!

yeah I had a nanny!! Sowhat?!!

Mum and Dad both worked long hours, so me and my brother were picked up from school and looked after by the same woman for 12 years - she's like a second mother to me, but she prefers to think of herself as an older sister these days!

Its really not as posh as it sounds - she didn't have a silly uniform and taught us northern!

Was that when your mum was training to be a racing driver?

Middle class and rising.

Both parents were from working class families (Chantry and Castle Hill) but both passed 11+ and went to Northgate when is was a Grammar school. Both got good jobs at 16 and became professionals. Dad set up a successful business.

So grew up in a four bed detached in Rushmere St Andrew and went to St Johns Primary, then Copleston and then Ipswich School for Sixth Form. Two holidays a year overseas (Easter and Summer). Dad drove a Merc and Mum a new XR3i. Got some stick at Copleston for being the rich family - then at Ipswich School realised we were a long way away from rich.

With my Dad growing up on Chantry and starting his own business the one thing he taught we above all else was hard work. So I had part time jobs from the age of 14, got a very good degree and have had a good career. Now earn over 120k and my wife earns about 100k. Kids go to private school and we have a nice house - but still realise we are a long long way away from being rich - we drive 3-4 old Kias and haven't had a holiday in 3 years because all our disposable income goes on the mortgage and school fees.

Very middle class here.

Private school education, grew up in South East London/North West Kent border. Both my parents worked in the NHS. Parents did buy a weekend house in Suffolk after I left home. They sold that and the house I grew up in for a huge place in Woodbridge to retire too.

Excellent. How has being privately educated helped you in life?

I went to Ipswich School but there were far better-off families than ours lording it up around there, and I've come to learn it was relatively small fry in the public school game.

I had a bit of a mixture, nothing ever like what was described in the OP but when I was younger we were often tight for money, my Dad had set his own business up though and that did better as I got older.

I would say probably from the age of about 15 life was a lot more comfortable and foreign holidays started, my Dad was able to loan me the money to buy my first car at 17 for example, a whole £450 for a car older than me lol.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

I ran away from home once after my mum brought home a pair of dunlops.

Haha that just reminded me of something...........

At the age of around 11, I was bought a pair of Dunlop Greenflash, and was really happy to have them. I showed them to a fashionable schoolmate type who lived in the nicer area of Copleston catchment, and whilst wearing his Adidas All Blacks, he muttered that memorable word of the time "oof", and my Greenflashes were never to be seen in public again!

I went to private school but was on a scholarship and assisted place so wasn't rich. I went to Florida when I was 10 for 2 weeks, and then Spain for a week when I was 15 - they were my only family holidays bar Butlins and the like.

My parents are well off now, if they were as well off now as they were 25 years ago things may have been different but I grew up with plenty of people you speak about and all were good guys and gals nearly.

I think they struggle when they leave home though, in my experience especially the girls - going on holiday with Mum and Dad, staying in lush hotels and not wanting for anything. Spending hundreds on items of clothing or bags, to then getting a job in events and scraping by in London with a couple of hundred quid spare for all your socialising and holidays is a big difference.

EDIT - As per SomethingBlue's post, once you get out of Ipswich and Ipswich School you would barely even describe it as a 'public school' the way the press do with regards to Eton and the like. When you meet people from the very top schools it is a different world.

4 bed detached house, villa in spain overlooking 6th green, boat worth considerably more than house, 3 or 4 holidays a year, I declined private education much to my fathers' disappointment as he's convinced it's what got him where he was (I suspect i'm more of a disappointment now).

Nice cars, new mercs, although I distinctly remember us going from a white lotus to a yellow skoda when I was young (when skoda jokes were in their prime) ....to a porsche soon after.

Back in the early 90's my old man bought PC's for £2-3k most years...that's a lot even by today's standards. I look back and realise how ridiculous it was.

Parents divorced about 12 years ago, his bonus that year was over £250k, mum got that lol!

They were never happy, still not, always want more.

I feel sorry for them to be honest.
