Notre Dame all over again. Tragic.

A sign of the End Times, and that most of you haven't been reading your Bibles as you should.

Still, there's always millions poured into funds like this from the great and good. Less so for more immediate, human problems, but cathedrals look nice and aren't as complex.

Churches should be museums or destroyed.

Organised religion is a cancer (although I respect people’s right to believe in what they want if they don’t hurt others, but organised religion is arguably more corrupt than our current government.

Well the first option is turn them into museums.

Not sure if you're trolling here Callis. I'm not keen on organised religion or the sway it has in society but knocking down churches is a bit far. These buildings were erected by people in their short lives living in , well , Medieval conditions. They are should also be seen as a testament to the skill and pride of the working class and are the only mark that they left on this planet rather than the paintings and statues of the 'great and good.' Like Brecht said, ' History is not made by great men.'

I love a good church meself. Nice and cool to wander into after a hot bike ride to look at a fascinating hotchpotch of centuries of architecture, carving, and minutiae of repairs, centuries-old graffiti etc.

I'm a non-believer myself, and agree with your sentiments about organised religion in general, but it's easy to get too carried away and tar them all with the same brush. I presume that most religions started as philosophies of good intention, and became corrupted by the greedy, manipulative and power-hungry weak-minded fools who exist in all walks of life. I think that most religious officers, certainly at the grass roots level, tend to be benevolent well-intentioned people, usually pretty tolerant even of irreverent pagans like me!

I think it's possibly that the French are just a tad clumsy with their cathedrals. I use to have a neighbour that loved to fry up chips after getting half pissed in pub. Would have 1-2 chip pan fires a year....

Continually halted human progress?

Those who pushed for the abolition of slavery and the great social reforms of the 19th century were all involved in organised religion. It was organised religion which preserved and propagated culture and learning during the Middle Ages (not to mention providing the bulk of helath and social care). Catholic Liberation Theology opposed oppressive regimes in Latin America. C of E vicars were among the first supporters of Charles Darwin.

The church vs progress/science narrative is largely the invention of certain enlightenment and 19th century writers and their followers. Often thinking of situations like 18th century Spain and Italy, which were particularly reactionary and did crack down on independent thought. But that doesn't reflect what was happening in other times and places.

On the whole believing in sky men, still to this day, is largely responsible for atrocities around the world and the anti-progress of humanity/science/fact. Look at the evangelical love for Trump RN. Or the message the catholic church sent in regards to HIV and protection. Or the manipulation of the Koran to encourage martyrdom in the 70s/80s. Or Saudi laws. Or the rights of women being trod on by pro lifers.

So people should be free to believe what they want to believe ... but not what I don't think they should. Interesting idea of freedom of belief.

It is your bigotry that breaks the "think before you post".

I do think there should be limits on freedom yes. However, I do not think either following your atheistic philosophy or any of the religious non-freedom models that happen in many parts of the world is right.

Not going to bother to argue further because you are too blind to reason with as continually proven and immediately resort to insults like you already have. Good night.

You seem to have failed to grasp the difference between religious belief and organised religion, which makes your entire point a non-starter.

Don’t run off pretending moral high ground because you can’t engage your brain, that’s your argument to have with yourself.

You could do a + and - cost sheet, work out the balance, take the best bits & fight against the bad bits. I think that's how flawed humankind has managed to evolve over time.

Organised religion is corrupt and hideously hypocritical by interpretation of texts that were the word of man told by “God”.

I have plenty of my own beliefs and communities with like minded individuals but no one is grossly profiting through active greed or a set of rules that can be changed depending on how they are read.

Perhaps there’s a market in a vegan-based religion?! That’d be a good way to ruin it on second thought?
