I'm sure I'm not the only one who's a tad sceptical about all this, insomuch as not being convinced that there's not some strange Trump scheme behind this.
With the debate the other night, will Biden have to quarantine as well? The only Trump 'play' I can see here is either trying to get the second debate cancelled, or trying to get Biden shut away for a fortnight.
It is a measure of Trumps constant dishonesty that your scepticism will be a widely held thought.
The election is as good as lost - and will mean his orange face being hauled before various courts over alleged criminal activity. Resign, and get Pence to pardon him would seem a logical move for a shyster such as himself.
Whatever it is, it is another twist in the tail of the interesting times we live in. Who needs the telly when it is all happening for real ?

Let's assume that he does have Covid-19. He needs to have an epihany and get real about this virus. If he recovers, and I expect him to, then announcing that he was right all along that the symptons are generally mild and people have nothing to be worried about will be the dumbest thing he can say. But he'll say it and you know he will.

He's been playing down C19 so it might actually look a bit weak to some of his base to say he now has it, especially as a lot don't believe in it anyway.
I wouldn't be surprised if he does have it, he's not big on masks or social distancing.
I also wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't and just wants to avoid the next debate.

You said you don't see the benefit but you can now (steals the agenda, gets sympathy votes), so my work here is done.
1. He hasn't denied it exists. Down-playing isn't quite the same. 2. He talked all over Biden in the last debate, now they're saying they're changing them so that doesn't happen he says they're moving the goalposts. Trump would get owned in debates. Now he can just post what he likes from twitter and avoid the face-to-face difficult stuff. 3. Fair point, although depends what the worst kind of loser is. Losing the election or being sick (although he'd probably frame it as 'I wanted to fight on but they wouldn't let me,' thus protecting his strong man image). 4. No idea, it's buried! Like I said these were just off the top of my head.
There is, of course, the chance to defeat it and be a hero.

The timing is quite suspicious. If he had announced it yesterday then 14 days quarantine means he still has to do the debate on the 15th.
Now quarantine will last until the 16th and he won't have to do it.

If not, could "prove" the virus is mostly harmless, allowing a full reopening of the economy, etc.

He won't look weak if he defeats it like a good strong patriotic American.
He can also say he doesn't want to stop/isolate... but 'they' are making him.
And you see NO CHANCE of him resigning... even if resigning means he can say forever more he never lost a presidential election... plus Pence can pardon him so he won't face any criminal charges. I'm not saying he will resign, but it's a big call to say there's no reason why he might.
