I've just seen the clips from Twitter as I don't have a licence to watch on Iplayer but bloody hell, these heartless individuals... They're all preaching personal responsibility, while voting for a policy that will ensure whether or not kids eat is determined by their parents income, which they have no control over.
First we have Brendan Clarke Smith accusing those wanting to feed kids of "virtue signalling." He's the same bloke who was caught denying the scale of food banks during his election hustings.
And Kieran Mullen, claiming that it's not the state's job to feed kids.

It's just another of those things some people assume is happening, and have no idea what the actual score is at all.
It sounds good in their heads, it doesn't have to be true to be repeated.
To suggest the country is in debt because of 'handouts' is absurd. Notably these people don't comment on the billions wasted by government on white elephants or even appear to notice it happening. |
I think handouts for rich people are okay because that motivates them, but to incentivise poor people we have to cut their support. Pretty sure that's how it works. | |

No child deserves to starve and the argument that some parents waste benefits and/or shouldn’t have children is nonsense, because a child is still suffering and that is not ok. I have signed the petition and hope for a government u-turn.
However, rarely are issues black and white, and there are policy considerations to take into account. Parents have to take some responsibility, if you take away all financial responsibility and financial burden from parents, then is there not a danger of those parents having more children that they cannot afford knowing the state will pick up the burden: There has to be some balance. |  | | |
