My Energy Supplier has gone kaput, second one in successive years, starting to think I might be a bad omen.
In the meantime I'll await who OFGEM move me to before I can change, chances are it will be British Gash, so any recommendations would be welcome!

As you say you will be placed with one of the biggies like British Gas or Scottish Power so you won't be able to choose for a while, but when you can I have found that Octopus are a pretty good choice.
Green, competitive prices, and a user friendly website where you can set your own monthly payment amount, which is a useful feature as long as you are sensible about it.

I have been with Octopus a couple of months, even though it as only been a short period I have been impressed with them, great communication throughout the switch and find their website easy to use and updates quickly.
Some nice little features such as well, such as chance a win money off your bill if you submit a meter reading, you can request that they either plant a tree or send you an octopus toy . They also have a referral scheme where both you and the referrer get £50 bill credit.

Switched to them a few months ago, incredibly cheap, superb customer services (an actual human being answering your call straight away, no menus, no loops, no holding - wow!) and one of the few who do an E10 tarriff as well as 100% renewable. Am leccy only.

I'm with Outfox The Market, have been for many years now, and would highly recommend them. They've just been ranked as the number 1 energy supplier with 'Which?', and have excellent customer service (a very responsive Facebook group, and a very quick live-chat option on their website).
They're 100% green as well, if that's a consideration.
Generally speaking, though, do a search with as much information as you can, see who's cheapest in your area for your circumstances and, as long as they're not too new and don't have abysmal customer service, go with them.
DON'T bother with any switching services, as you can be sure that they won't cover the whole of the market, only suppliers who'll pay them commission for the switch (OtM, for example, don't pay commission). |  |
