Cook says the takeover was a total surprise.... 10:28 - Apr 12 with 1540 viewsTrequartista

.... yet this news outlet and the fans knew the exact pension plan that would be funding the takeover.

Is that credible?

Think he probably means it actually happening and concluding came as a surprise.

It was widely reported in the Athletic, on here, in other media etc. He's not stupid.

Don't think he's being entirely truthful. Maybe he is keeping his cards close in case they change the structure.

If he really had no idea then the new owners are probably well aware of what we've put up with over the last 14 years under Evans.

Truly impaired.

Paul won't have been spending his time speaking to CHIS's and gathering intelligence like Phil. The presser today seems to confirm he'd been told about investment but not a buy out, hence the comments about "exciting times behind the scenes."

I think its just a case of being told by Evans that nothing was close but investment was possible at some point.
Turned up to a normal day on Wednesday to find out hed sold up completely.

Edit - meant to be in reply to the OP, not you specifically J2.

He kind of touches on that in the presser. I suspect his carefully chosen and vague words, and the fact that a takeover (not investment, a takeover) has been plastered all over the press for weeks, means he at least had a good inkling that ME would end up being bought out.

'Quizzed on whether he knew the takeover was happening, whether it had come up in his discussions with Evans, he added: “I think guys I’ve got to be careful because you want to take me in to waters I just don’t want to go into.

“I can only be truthful, I was aware that Marcus was looking for investment into the football club and like everybody else, I think a deal was struck in the end where Marcus couldn’t have majority control of the club. I think the new American investors wanted that."

The most important thing there though is that he seems genuinely excited about the future and thinks the relationship he's going to have with the new structure should be a solid one.

Hopefully this will put to bed some of the wild speculation over the weekend.

I still think it's strange he didn't do post match stuff media though. A decent manager/leader should have the emotional intelligence to deal with that side of things, even if we have lost.

I don't understand how he didn't know it was happening, or possibly going to happen. Unless Evans literally said "I'm getting more investment but I'll still be 100% in charge".

Maybe he was officially outside the limits of any DIA an can't admit to have been told all about it by Marcus. Seems the most likely explanation.

I think he 's fulsomely saying not too much. I imagine that he 's quickly realised that his no-show was the wrong thing to do at the time, and is now speaking good things while awaiting the developments that will affect him most in terms of managerial autonomy.

Hadn't seen this post when I posted similar. So yeah, I agree.

Also good point from the poster who said if he was under an NDA then he would have to act surprised, even if he did actually know more.

of Cook's presser, I reckon he knew plenty about the takeover and the only surprise was when it finally actually happened.

There's various references to 'not wanting to talk further' on certain aspects, and I think that could be out of respect for Lambert. We know Evans sounded Cook (and others) out long before Lambert got the boot. And the consortium have been in discussion with Marcus for 14 months. I'd imagine a possibility of huge investment coming in would be a great way to sell a club to a prospective manager - a manager who, let's not forget, turned down bigger clubs in a higher division and waited.

I wouldn't mind betting Cook knew about the chance of a takeover before anyone else.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I honestly don’t think there is anything to see in all this. It’s pretty obvious he knew someth8ng was afoot - he’s not denying that.

It’s pretty clear thought hat he hadn’t been told before last weds that a complete takeover had been done. In one sense, why would he be told? He’s a manager of the football team and nothing to do with the company as such. On the other hand I’d have thought that ME might just have given him the heads up and a bit of reassurance regarding his position the night before.

In the light of his comments today we’ve made way too much of him not doing the pressers. He’s pretty clear that Friday was just to do training (and boy they need it!) and after the games was because he didn’t want to have to be negative about the players.

If Evans told him one thing and the press were reporting something else, what was he supposed to believe?
