Ditch the Tractor Boys nickname. on 16:24 - Apr 14 by jeera
Tommy Miller once said he and other players hated it.
Jim said he didn't like it as he didn't want to be considered a carrot-crunching yokel. But aren't many of these things largely used by the media? Does any fan really talk about Man u as the "Red Devils" or Everton as the "toffees" or toffeemen? Malcolm Allison did change Crystal Palace's nickname form the Glaziers to the Eagles & that did stick. Chelsea also dropped "The Pensioners" under the instruction on manager Ted Drake to the bland, near meaningless "blues".

I always thought it was a shot at the big clubs writing us off. Didn't really understand why it stuck.
The other thing like that was when we had that comeback vrs Sheff Utd and shoved that song back in their face. Then we had to endure it for the next decade, as if it was ours.
This may just be urban myth, but I thought it came from the 2000/1 season with town fans singing '3-0 to the whipping boys' at Goodison. This was picked up and we were referred to as tractor boys by the media.

I don't know why it upsets some people. It was used by the media as a bit of a pisstake term... then we shoved it back in everyone's faces by being good (singing 1-0 to the Tractor Boys, etc.)
I find it mildly whimsical.
If you refer to yourself as one of the blues or super blues then no-one knows who you are. Everyone knows who the Tractor Boys are. Also, Super Blues is a bit cringe IMO, especially these days.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

First time I heard it was that season 2000/01 when we beat Milwall in the cup. I think they sung it to us as a derogatory remark when we were 2-0 and 3-0 up, then we joined in and took over the chant at 4-0 and 5-0
Oh to score 5 goals again......
Personally I didn't like it at first, and don't think it really applies to many of our fans, but at least its our own unique identity

How can you not love the Tractor Boys?
Stay.
I'm 54, remember when we started to be referred to as the tractor boys. Oppo fans would sing "your just a bunch of farmers!".....that and the tractor Derby (when we used to play them!) that was the headline for a while. Keep it.

If I chat to someone I've just met at work or whatever and tell them I'm a town fan, 9 times out of ten they'll go 'ah! A tractor boy'. Probably partly because we're so off the radar they don't know what else to say. Either way, seems like the name is there to stay like it or not.
Invented by the press in the 01’ season, never sung by us, never used by the merchandising arm of the club, never mentioned in the 90’s or before. Ditch it, but it’s not up to us, the press own it, they’ll use it. Tell the Yanks to get the proper badge back on the shirt while they’re sorting stuff out, or, for the pedantic ones, even the Town coat of arms badge.

The press blew it up, but wasn't it us owning a common slur thrown at us by opposition fans? A joint effort at least if I remember rightly.

Definitely was sung by us! Think it was first sung at a game against Birmingham in about 98 but really took off when we beat Leeds at Elland Road early in the Premier League campaign. Became the chant of the season and media picked up on it from there.

It's one of those nicknames no one really uses outside of the media. How often have any of you referred to Sunderland as The Black Cats? Or United as The Red Devils? Doesn't happen in fan to fan talk.
In fact, most nicknames are crap when you stop and think about it. Don't think it's a massive issue.

This is pretty much how I see it. Yes, we could stop using it but the media still would.
"What's that coming over the hill? Is it a tractor? Is it a tractor?"

Sorry but I'm gonna have to lay this down and put it to bed.
It started when we were playing Birmingham and they scored, they suddenly started singing - No noise from The Tractor Boys
When we went 2 - 1 up it was sang back in jest - 2 - 1 to The Tractor Boys
And then Sky picked up on it and the rest is a miserable continuation.
I absolutely hate it, it makes us out to be a bunch of yokels.
Tractor Boy = face painted, blue and white wig wearing, anti northern bypass protesting sh1t for brains
