The BBC license fee 16:10 - Jun 4 with 8366 viewsBelsteadCav

After David Mitchell defence of the bbc the other day, which tv or radio show do you think is worth the license fee?

Obviously the sport coverage ( World Cup, Olympics etc )
Spring watch
Radio 2, radio 5 live and 6 music

What else do you think is worth it?

Definitely any programming which wouldn’t be viable on free-to-air commercial television. The natural history department is second to none.

Masterchef, Great British Menu. The Beeb has lots of good programming really. I feel like the licence fee is decent value.

Bellers you seem to be conflating “worth it” with “things I like”.
I don’t like watching Children in Need but it’s worth it.

Giri/Haji. I'll keep banging on about it until you all watch it. The British/Japanese The Bridge or Fargo. So good and criminally under-promoted.

Good point.

But I still think it’s worth the money

Biannual international football tournament coverage
Annual Eurovision Song Contest Coverage
The BBC News/sport website

That’s probably it tbh, I think most of the programming is clearly not aimed at me/my generation so it’s more paying the fee for access to other channels.

The Louis Theroux docs. I don't think the early ones would have been commissioned by any other broadcaster.

The news on any BBC TV or Radio Channel. Not having output controlled by powerful media moguls, like Murdoch, is worth every penny of the licence fee and more.

After I saw his pre planned and completely set up tirade I had a look at the evenings BBC viewing and the only thing worth watching was Fawlty Towers and that's 40 years old

It's not the amount of money for the license I am against it is the fact that I haven't got a choice.

I mean what is it, £150? I just paid a robbing bastard dentist £50 for 5 minutes of his time.

The forces undermining the BBC are the right, and the right wing press. BBC in a way gives us our identity. It’s demise will see the further rise of populism and the disease of Fox News type journalism.

Yes it has got a lot wrong, and the main news and journalism is weak.

But for me just these items alone justify the fee:

Autumn/spring watch
Motherland
Newsnight

R4 output - in our time, today, broadcasting house, Saturday live
6 music - Sean Keavny

Those items alone justify the license fee

The news website, which is without doubt the best in the UK IMO.

The football website used to be great, but in recent years they've really cut back the coverage of anything outside the Premier League - removing the league sections from the main page was a big backwards step as now it's quite difficult to access news stories from the lower division unless they make the front page (which isn't very often).

In some ways the license fee is a piece of forced altruism. Want to watch Eastenders, or catch the latest Attenborough documentary? Then pay for a licence fee so the BBC can still produce stuff others want to watch/listen to.

So Facters is right in my book; what's worth the license fee is the whole output even if only part of that output appeals on a personal level or has any objective worth.
