Cornell contract terminated.... on 16:16 - Jun 11 by chrismakin | well that's changed then, used to be if terminated it would include fees, Mutual meant there was an agreement between the two parties to move on for the best of both parties and no fees involved. Oh well, which ever, good for David and the club to sort it now and move on. [Post edited 11 Jun 2021 16:21]

I think it's always been this way. Why would a footballer give up money that was owed to him? Cornell consented to cancel his contract because he was paid to do so. [Post edited 11 Jun 2021 16:30]

Cornell contract terminated.... on 16:05 - Jun 11 by itfcjoe | He's got Championship interest from a couple of clubs, guess we have had to pay him off for this |
If he has somewhere to go and wants to leave, there's a possibility both parties just agreed to the mutual termination so he could get on with it, isn't there? Something similar happened with Emmanuel going to Bolton, I believe.

Why? If clubs aren't willing to pay for him and he's got an opportunity at a Champ club, just makes sense for all parties really.

Cornell contract terminated.... on 16:16 - Jun 11 by ChipLimehouse | My name is Chip Limehouse I have just been made aware of David TPM Cornell contract termination and must say how disappointing this news is. TPM was a more than handy backup goalie who never let us down when he turned out, the ability to consume vast amounts of beer before matches and save a penalty is commendable and I think the club are letting him go just because he is a maverick. He also enjoyed sinking numerous beers during lockdowns and was always up for a holiday in the sun at all inclusive hotels. In what has been a terrible year for the hospitality trade the loss of TPM from the club is only going to impact the local economy further. The only good to come from this is that the leaving do will be something that goes down in the history of ITFC [Post edited 11 Jun 2021 16:17]

Cornell contract terminated.... on 16:44 - Jun 11 with 1738 views | Hipsterectomy | On Football Manager, mutual termination means you pay off maybe 1/2 or 3/4 of their remaining contract, rather than they just leave. If that's usually the case or not I have no idea, can't imagine he was on much as a League 1 back up from Northampton

My understanding is that your assumption is quite fair. The agreement can be structured in any way the player and club agrees. He was contracted for another 12 months, it could be agreed that he can leave now, and we'll keep paying him until he signs somewhere else (freeing him up to trial elsewhere, prove himself, try and earn a contract beyond 1 year etc). It could be that the club said 'look, you'll earn £100k to sit here doing nothing for a year, we'll give you a lump sum of £25k and we'll go our separate ways' which he might think was fair enough, if he's confident he'll get something else. I very much doubt any clubs would've been willing to offer any money for him, and if every month he's here is costing us £10k for example, then it often makes sense for both parties to part ways.

mutual just means whatever's acceptable to both parties. could be full payment of contract, zero payment or anything in between. if it is to go to a championship club, then should be on the low end.

If applicable, imagine we are just paying the difference for the final year of his contract between whatever deal he's agreed elsewhere and what he was on here. [Post edited 11 Jun 2021 18:31]
