National football rivalries. 09:52 - Jun 18 with 3798 views | MattinLondon | What with England playing Scotland tonight just wondered if the vast majority (English fans at least) still consider Scotland to be their greatest rivals? For me, it’ll be good to beat Scotland in a traditional derby sense but Argentina are the team that I want to see England humiliate. I love Argentina as a country, their fans are magnificent, but they’re national team…no.

They really don’t - it’s all about Holland to most German fans. Think France hold England up quite highly in terms of rivalry.

Given England are a pretty disliked country globally I’d say a lot of countries quite like the thought of getting one over on us. Luckily for them they often do

I think the same is true of Scotland-England. The rivalry is stronger on the Scottish side because we’ve only played Scotland a handful of times in my lifetime, always in friendlies and I’ve never really cared about beating them. For me Portugal is the one that evokes the biggest feeling of rivals because of the quarter finals of 2004 and 2006.

Yeah I think the French also have an eye on Italy most of the time. Croatia v Serbia and Egypt v Algeria are pretty tasty rivalries I think. Personally I love beating Argentina, the game in 2005(I think) when Owen scored 2 in injury time to win 3-2 was sensational.

I'd love to see us smash Portugal, my hatred for that winker Ronaldo still burns brightly.

I guess it varies person to person, I would agree with Portugal though. Ronaldo's wink taught me what it meant to hate as a young boy.

German fans do have an ongoing rivalry with Holland, but England and, more in terms of rivalry on the field, Italy are up there too. Argentina have a "special" rivalry with England that goes deeper than football. I was at a WC qualifier in BA against Chile a few years ago, and those two sets of fans hate each other. The Chileans were bussed in and out of the stadium surrounded by heavily armed police. Anyway, a couple of times during the game and without any reason or provocation, the Argies start singing, "El que no salta es un Inglés" (he who is not jumping is English). Everyone in El Monumental jumped, apart from me and the Chileans.

The rivalries are more political than anything else, The Argies don't like us due to the Falklands, the Dutch detest the Germans cause they stole their bikes in the War and the Irish don't like us for a plethora of reasons going back 100 years.

I usually follow Ireland whenever they qualify and maybe there's a little needle with England but otherwise the 'We're just here for the beers' attitude is a great one that more football fans should have - makes the tournaments a lot more enjoyable. The England-Germany non-reciprocal thing is just embarrassing.

There is a far greater importance placed on this game by those north of the border than ever there is down here. As PG Wodehouse wrote "It is never difficult to distinguish between a Scotsman with a grievance and a ray of sunshine." We happen to be the most obvious target to vent that long held and nursed national grievance. Otherwise, I do not believe there is anything in any national football rivalries that are not simply emneties between countries manifest on the pitch.
