Cook had better know exactly what he's doing 12:43 - Jun 23 with 9739 viewsSomethingBlue

(Which is different to saying "Cook doesn't know what he's doing")

What's that, 11 players starting first-team training and nearly three times as many in the 23s? Even considering there won't be much ball work over the first week, this is one hell of a high wire act. Need to see four or five more players come in very quickly otherwise this will start to look pretty messy.

That's good but surely Dobra has already proved that he's up for the fight by his performances at the end of last season and comments recently.

Not sure what else he can do unless there is a question of his attitude within the club.

I seem to remember a few years ago that his attitude was questioned by whoever was manager. Or am I imagining that?

It’s interesting that despite the way many of us called for the group of younger players to be given a chance, a couple of years on they have been, haven’t cut the mustard and now other clubs aren’t exactly queuing up to sign them, I for one I thought Downes would be courted by a few clubs in the championship; likewise Bishop, but now it’s just Lg 1 teams interested it seems.

Like you say, one hell of a high wire act - as things stand it’s hard to see anything bar a few PL loanees coming at the end of the window with how much recruitment we need - coupled up with giving decent players away.

Our floor is realistically the middle of this league, so it isn’t going to go disastrously in that regard but how slow a start will Gamechanger/Ashton put up with? Because unless a lot happens in next 2-3 weeks this season has been set up to fail (and a lot of that is on Cook)

Just have to hope the 5 deals Ashton spoke about a couple of weeks ago are close to fruition, or we need to get past June 30th for things like loyalty bonuses to be waived etc in contracts if those we are looking at…..because so much needs to happen. Starting the season with 11 first team and 30 in U23s is something that could go badly badly wrong, unless you believe it is this masterful feat of manngement…..whatever it is, it will be judged with 20:20 hindsight in a few months

ha i certainly didn't, I hated Hurst.

Also, you can't compare the two anyway, Hurst had no experience of doing what he had to do and at a higher level, PC does.

Also, we had Lee O'Neil and Evans in charge, now we have experienced footballing experienced CEO, Chairman etc involved.

I can. I just did.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

As you say, players contracts aren't up until the end of June. Im very optimistic we will get a good few ins and outs in those first two weeks of July.

yep, that sounds about it

Prove yourself good enough for the standard now expected - or move on.

Maybe it won't be the coming season that we achieve promotion, but it will be the season that players realise they have to earn their wages on performance, not just appearance.

About time too.

Extremely sceptical about the man management idea that the more you humiliate and punish people, the more you get out of them.

Less than convinced that we're imminently going to recruit players of a significantly higher level than all the ones we're binning. We'll see though, I guess.

Which players are being humiliated and punished?

You've got a few who are leaving so don't need to be with the first team and 1 who it back where he was last summer.

Only the kenlock one is one not expected as a handy backup but again could easily be one that's on the move.

If the purpose is to motivate some players to kick on, of course it's punishment to make them train with the U23s, what else would you call it?

… does this latest management strategy from Cook damage our ability to recruit talent?

Or does it combine with players under the bus videos from the end of last season to make us look a less desirable club?

My hope is that our wages, the US funded project, Cooks existing reputation and the two signings to date cancel the above out.

But I have a niggling feeling that an incoming player is not going to be enamoured by a first team squad of 11!!!

I cant see any other than Kenlock that we have moved across with the potential of it being prove a point. ( kenlock doesnt really have anything to prove mind you as you know what you get with him)

Downes. Bishop. Lankester are off. Jackson... no real point to prove as been here long enough now and had time under PC and most likely off.

Dobra needs to slow down and work with the u23s and first team when they feel hes ready for it long term rather than being put into it immediately.

No issue with what he is doing. Everybody will look at it differently and make there judgements. Only hindsight will show whether it was right or wrong.

Nothing he has done yet raises any red flags for me, the people beginning the season with u23’s I have no issue with.

I back him, I think he’s a very good manager at this level. You either back your manager entirely or don’t bother at all, no room for half hearted attempted support. It’s very clear to me he has full support of Ashton/GC to put his plans in to plan.

I’ve no issues with his signings, think Evans, Burns & Jacobs (if done) are very good operators at this level.

There's lots of speculation on here about it being "motivation". Even you're speculating that it's designed to motivate Dobra.

If it's a holding group for players we're selling, well, what a signal to send prospective buyers!

Meanwhile our total first team squad is 11 players, most of them chosen seemingly on the technicality that they weren't available to play for Cook.

I'm not speculating on Dobs. That ones for certain

Couldnt tell you on the others but with linked moves away for all of them it's not a shock to see them in the u23s.

In regards to being a holding group.. bishop. Lankester moves etc could be well underway. We saw how out the blue Hawkins deal was done. And it would make sense to leave them out during negotiations.

Or for some of the U23 crew to come back fit, keen and then to push themselves forward in training. Grab the manager's attention and earn an upgrade.

Impossible to say at the moment, we’re in unchartered territory which is rightly causing anxiety. Whatever happens, Cook has invited an enormous amount of pressure on himself. Time will tell whether he’s right or not but despite being a big fan of his work, I’m growing more concerned about some of the methods.

(Or that we'll imminently offload all the first team players we've sent to play with the stiffs?)

Dobra, I know what was said to him - guess as some said in that thread that you aren’t legally allowed to do that.

To claim he’s going back to 23s for motivations is mental, it’s just not the case - he played 20 games last season for first team - he’s in the bomb squad

No.

With Dobra it's not motivation its more trying to get a level head on him. And just slow his head down and to get him to remember what level he currently is and what he needs to do regularly to develop further to be a regular first team player. Dyer and TB working very closely with him.
