Masks post July 19 08:05 - Jul 5 with 9509 viewsbluelagos

Appears that the mandatory wearing of masks will be replaced by personal choice with govt guidance to wear them in enclosed busy places.

One obviously enclosed busy place is public transport, tubes, trains etc.

Playbook reported that TFL could retain masks as a condition of entry but it seems unlikely and would be unforecable imho.

So, is there a case for mask carriages, say 2 per tube, where you are expected to wear one. Would give those anxious or vulnerable the ability to travel as they choose and those who wish not to wear a mask the opportunity to do so without impacting on others by choosing a different carriage.

Good idea or as crp as my alternative days idea for pubs ? (Cv passport)

Wear a mask. Double up if you want. However you're out of luck if you believe you have the right to enforce this unhygienic practice on others.

There really is no need to be quite so rude.

You exist purely for your own gratification.
The mere fact that any of this has had to be spelled for you proves that.
Carry on though, it is sadly fascinating to watch an imbecile attempt to tie his own shoelaces with chopsticks.

Personally I'm delighted to be getting rid of them. Bloody awful things.

No issue whatsoever with others choosing to wear them. Also fair to say that I'll be a lot more cautious with cold symptoms than I was previously; e.g more willing to 'isolate' myself that I was before, take time away from work... The Asian use of masks when susceptible with cold makes far more sense now, than 18 months ago (unsurprisingly)

Interestingly, I think, if asked by someone else to put a mask on, I'd do so. I wonder if there's an argument to be made for using the mask as a courtesy, when asked?

Edited due to abysmal post structure.

Whitty said he would use out of courtesy. It’s a no brainier really, I certainly would as you wouldn’t know the reason why someone wants you to wear a mask. They could be in a vulnerable group fro example. You’d have to be a right selfish arse to refuse.

I will certainly continue to avoid public places (or at least be very conscious about social distancing) and wear a mask whilst it looks like we’ve got cases taking off again. I’ve had the b@stard virus once and have no intention of catching it again. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

Hey Fungers.

If we all just donned one when we have a stinking cold/whatever that would make a difference to other people wouldn't it?

You'd like to think we've at least learned that extra bit of respect for others, but we both know that won't happen across the board.

I do mean in enclosed spaces/public transport or course.

I think the issue was mainly around whether individuals would continue to wear masks in crowded areas.
The usual lads said they wouldn’t because they couldn’t give a toss about anyone but themselves.
I’m sure you’re moderately more sensible once someone hides the bottles.

Being the majority view doesn't mean it's the right view. As it stands the science supports the continual wearing of masks in crowded, enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces.

It's really not a hardship to don a mask for a few minutes on the tube or whatever. I know you've said you would but many clearly seem to think it's something akin to medieval torture.

Hey brother.

Agree, and I guess it all comes down to common mutual respect.

I remember going on a few trains/ flights back in the day full of cold; thought of doing that now seems absurd.

Very keen indeed to go out and get off my face in a field or hall somewhere (or some crap cellar in Deptford, at a push) to some loud repetitive beats, surrounded by plenty of others - but I know a lot of people can't think of anything worse. Others are scared witless by the prospect of this, and I can understand that too.

People need to use common sense, and I'm aware that the board view on how, er, common said common-sense is, varies.

Being your view also doesn't make it the right view

...........Although I confess I hadn't read the thread

I recently posted on another thread that I think on balance that masks should probably stay on public transport.

It's not my view.

It's the view of the scientific community backed up by peer reviewed studies and 18 months of solid evidence and I'm happy to trust the people who actually know what they are talking about on this point.

Indeed, I saw that and you, myself and the scientists are in agreement. Unfortunately the government aren't and that will cause a rise in cases, probably an exceptionally fast rise but we will see.

I wouldn't be surprised to see TFL making some sort of move to keep compulsory masks on the transport network. UNITE are already making statements about it given their staff have to be down there and don't have a choice to avoid it.

There is one huge issue with your post though:

People as an amorphous entity have shown that they can't really be trusted to use their common sense.

And this is where you and I fundamentally disagree, Stokie.

As I see it:-

The majority of people have been sensible this last year and a half.

Examples - People abandoning Christmas with relative good grace, accepting the utter lack of dignity surrounding the limitations on funerals (which is wholly dystopian, but that's a rant for another time), conforming with the restrictions on socialising with, in the main, little more than grumbling.

I think most people have demonstrated tremendous common sense since this started. You don't.

Comments noted about the cellar - to be fair that's likely to be a little way off yet.

All fair points but those are individual people and individual events. When people get together in larger numbers then things tend to be different. I however hope you are right and your faith is justified.

I guess the idiocy of a few probably has clouded my judgement of the whole but I see it a lot now - unfortunately I had to go on the train today and 50% at least weren't wearing masks even though it's still the law. That doesn't seem to be uncommon from my other experiences and the experiences others have posted on here.

I still think masks should be compulsory in confined areas and public transport though - no harm in taking a few decisions out of the publics hands. My points have been specifically around mask wearing, not about the relaxation of rules themselves.

People can argue all day over whether they feel people are being sensible or not; the bottom line is that how we are behaving as a group isn't doing enough to limit the spread. That's demonstrably true as under current behaviours cases are rising steeply and hospital admissions are now also starting to rise again. And that's with some controls (albeit minimal) still in place.

Removing all legal controls now when we're making such good progress with the vaccines seems utterly crazy and risks throwing all the good work away (3rd wave due to large %age of the pop still not fully vaccinated and/or emergence of vaccine resistant variant). It's Russian Roulette.

I think I'll be shopping in FFP3 masks, at least they'll give me a modicum of protection against all the selfish people who don't understand (or don't care) that mask wearing is to protect others. Sadly my stash of FFP3 aren't fit tested to me though (so in effect I'll be making a pointless stand)

Your second sentence has been proven wrong already by the last 15 months. The vast majority of people have followed the rules and used their common sense.

All anybody needs to do, if they’re that worried about getting sick, is not go out. And wear a mask when they have to.

Your reasoning makes no sense. Wearing a mask would prevent me from passing on an illness, not the other way around. So why, if I was that worried, would wearing a mask make me feel more comfortable.

I'm going to wearing a mask when I'm in enclosed spaces for the time being because it is the right thing to do whilst we are still in the middle of a pandemic. I am somewhat shocked people consider this to be a tremendous hardship.

That’s up to you innit. And wearing a mask doesn’t prevent anything unless several strict criteria are met around hygiene and single use etc.
As I say, if people are scared, don’t go out. If you have to for work wear a mask if it makes you more comfortable like the poster above who said they are wearing a mask even though they know it’s pointless.
