If it means my second year of uni is better than my first, (not that it was particularly bad, just predictably underwhelming) than I'm in favour, even if this is perhaps a slightly self-centred view.

I'll admit that I don't actually look at any covid news or numbers though, because I don't see the point in worrying myself, and I also find it really boring, so I can't really make an informed judgement. So maybe I'm wrong, idk.

Not sure it’s that a big a deal. Don’t wear one at work, don’t wear one at the pub, don’t use public transport.

I do understand the message Boris said tonight (for once) though. Surely it is better to try it now rather than the winter. I think we all are in agreement we have to live with covid so why not now.

Do you want there to be more restrictions / lockdowns in the autumn and winter?

When do you think we should get back to normal again?

People are dying through lack of medical care/operations being delayed, businesses are being ruined, lockdowns do not work for a thriving society.

Who mentioned lockdowns?

We aren't really locked down at the moment. You are conflating different issues and different levels of restrictions/rules to help manage the spread.

Trying it whilst cases aren’t rising and there’s a new variant which seems more transmissible before we can do any further research on that?

And this ruddy obsession of “let’s go abroad” is getting on my last nerve. It was people travelling back into the country who brought it here in the first place.

Looks like Khan is looking into ignoring the government rules and keeping masks on London transport.

"The wearing of face coverings on public transport helps to reduce the spread of Covid, and crucially gives Londoners confidence to travel on the network, which is vital to our economic recovery. Further discussions are now planned with Transport for London, the Department for Transport and other transport providers before we decide our next steps."

Ryanair announced masks would be compulsory on their flights earlier today and it's pretty awful to be behind Ryanair in anything really. That's also going to cause some dilemmas for the mask-hating sun worshippers heading to Spain.

Infections aren't going down anytime soon. Hospitalisations are barely rising, deaths not at all, but the biggest rise continues to be vaccinations.

Some restrictions will 100% return for flu season, this would happen regardless of whether we lift fully or not.

People with all sorts of medical needs will die if hospitals are swamped(again) with people with a respiratory virus which is prevented by some simple measures.

The Lambda variant is already looking more transmissible than the Delta from early research. It's not confirmed but the virus will continue to optimise itself given a large enough pool of infections, something the world seems determined to give it.

Natural selection is incredibly efficient given a large enough sample size. I wrote an optimiser using a genetic algorithm and it works fantastically, I never thought I would have to see it played out in the real world though.

SB

That would seem to be a particularly exotic variant.

Why do people think lockdown stopped operations.

It wasnt

It's the inability of hospitals to cope which leads to cancelled operations etc.

Over 15 million Over 50s in the UK....of which around 85% to 90% have been vaccinated.

Around 1.5m haven't been....and we have an variant that transmits more quickly as ever with the same level of symptoms etc.

Ask BlueBadger if he thinks the NHS can cope.

No it wasn't. I had an operation cancelled 'just incase' there was a surge of COVID.

Nearly 700 cases per 100,000 in Newcastle today. Higher than any of the previous two peaks for that area.

Is that any data to know how many of that 1.5m aren't vaccinated because they simply don't want to be?

Yeah. Thats not the lockdown causing it. That's the worry of the hospital not being able to fulfil the appt due to rise in hospitalisations.

How many are now going to be cancelled because that worry will now be there again.

Imagine focusing on a virus has killed far, far more people, is relatively easy to prevent and hasn't been fuelled by her a decade of government cuts to youth services and community policing.

In a pandemic.
