Downes to Bournemouth on 07:40 - Jul 13 with 3865 views | ipswichtillidie | Interesting that’s the first time I’ve seen someone actually say Downes wants to leave.. (other than when Palace came in!) makes the inclusion in the u23s now make more sense because for me Downes in our old squad was our best player. He doesn’t want to be here so we can finally all move on from this now. [Post edited 13 Jul 2021 7:42]

Yep some people have said as much but without seeing direct quotes it was a little hearsay. But now we know he has told Cook he wants a fresh challenge, best all round he goes and we get the best price. Shame, as what we're building here is exciting, we could be easily overtaking Bournemouth in a year and a bit time. [Post edited 13 Jul 2021 9:43]

I think it's been a given ever since the Palace interest.

I'm not sure that Cook has shown much desire to keep him either. https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town/bournemouth-make-move-for-downes-81399 Bournemouth would be a good move for him, recent history of improving players even if they have lost their way a little they are still currently a top-end Championship club. Just a shame we didn't get to see more of him last season, a fit Downes would have added some solidity to a stretched midfield.

If he's made his intentions clear that he wants to leave and isn't committed to the future plans, then Cooks not really had much choice. I can understand both positions. Good luck to Flynn, and we move on.

He said he wanted to leave last year? - Do you think he gave it a month or two and went "actually, I want to stay now."

I don't think he's more than good enough for the championship, I think that's the right move for him.

He’s not wanted to be here since last summer.

Agree. From the outside I get the sense that there were a few players that thought they were doing Town a favour by staying here. That type of attitude was always going to clash with Cook’s world view.

Northern League Division Two Would be a bit of a drop down to be fair.

He wanted a move to Palace. Public knowledge. After that and under the new ownership I think it’s fair to say that fans alike would have hoped being a local lad he’d want to stay and be a part of that. He doesn’t so we move on

Downes to Bournemouth on 08:55 - Jul 13 with 3018 views | OwainG1992 | More than happy for him to go. He was my favorite of the academy lads but he's wanted out for over a year. Move him on. We're moving forward with some wonderful business so far.

Downes to Bournemouth on 09:06 - Jul 13 with 2859 views | BlueandTruesince82 | Would be a good move all round if we get a sell on clause inserted as. And forgive the pun, Bournemouth are a club that prem sides will look to cherry pick from. Right level for him, hopefully a reasonable fee for us with more potential down the line

Downes to Bournemouth on 09:14 - Jul 13 with 2759 views | MrTown | I think we will get a decent fee for him with Ashton in negotiation. Happy to draw conclusion to this now and shift him on. We have replacements, it won't be a significant loss. Hopefully money goes towards bringing in Matt Crooks.

Downes to Bournemouth on 09:15 - Jul 13 with 2769 views | itfcjoe | A shame, will be sad to see him go - think he is the one I’d have liked most to see brought back into the fold. All the stuff about wanting to leave for over a year is overplayed - both the club and him handled the situation badly last summer, I certainly wish him well

Don’t understand where the local lad ‘one of our own’ comes from. He was born in Brentwood and supports West Ham.

Because he’s been at the club since he was 8 years old.

The sell on fee will be the most important part of this deal. i would be surprised if we get a million for him.
Downes to Bournemouth on 09:23 - Jul 13 with 2620 views | portmanking | Do we know yet what kind of midfielder Downes is? I still think he's stuck between being a dedicated holding midfielder or a box-to-box midfielder. You'd assume someone like Scott Parker may be able to redefine him.

It's not easy to define that, is it? Brentwood and Cambridge are equidistant from Town, and Bishop also has unequivocably been "one of our own". Our geographical separation widens the scope for the claim, unless it's beyond Diss. It's more of a "he's been a one-club lad with us since before we knew of his existence" sort of thing.

Even when its confirmed that he wanted to leave You still try to make out theres more to it and try to make out the club were in the wrong again. It's just simply a player who would like to leave that is all there is to it. It's not a problem. We both move on

This exactly. Thanks for explaining the obvious. Some like to play devils advocate for no apparent reason. [Post edited 13 Jul 2021 9:33]

Both parties were in the wrong and handled it badly - these things don’t happen in a vacuum
