Attn: cyclists on 14:02 - Jul 29 by chicoazul | Purely apocryphally on my part I’d say cyclists are much much worse for this behaviour. I’ve seen them do it many times at pedestrian crossings too. |
Cyclists are freer to do it because they can nip round traffic, some motorists who would otherwise do it have no choice but to stop behind decent law abiding people. On the other hand there are lot more cars on the roads so probably a lot more cars jumping red lights overall. Certainly in Ipswich, you only need to sit at the West End Road lights for a few minutes to see more cars jumping the lights than there are cyclists in total.

The whole point is they are not free to do it at all. Red lights apply to them.

That is not great consolation to friends and relatives of a person killed by a cyclist ignoring lights.

In my experience as a driver and cyclist I could count on one hand the cyclists I’ve seen behaving like nobs, yet I witness probably 10 or more drivers behaving like nobs daily. As others have said your anger should be directed towards 4 wheels not 2,and I would not be surprised if the amount of pedestrians killed by cyclists in history is probably less than are killed by cars in one week in the Uk.

I doubt it was meant to be. Statistics are quite hard to find on this, but a TFL survey from around a decade ago showed that of pedestrian injuries caused by red-light jumping, 4% involved cyclists, 13% motorcyclists and 71% cars. I don't approve of cyclists jumping red lights at all, and this case is a tragic consequence of a cyclist's highly irresponsible actions. But it's news because it's so rare. There were 470 pedestrian road deaths in 2019. The overwhelming majority of those were killed by motorists.

Maybe other people have different experiences from you and think you’re wrong? But that still doesn’t explain why people would downvote a post about the tragic death of an innocent man caused by a cyclist.

Your title sort of carpet bombed all cyclists as people who go through red lights and then you labelled them all pricks. Sort of comes across as you’re using this tragic death as a way to push forward your views on cyclists. Maybe be a tad more diplomatic- If you routinely go through red lights please think again - something like that. Also, some cyclists don’t like criticism - not all, but some are incredibly thin skinned.

Upvoting a post about the tragic death of an innocent man caused by a cyclist is even more peculiar, I'd have thought. Maybe - just maybe - that isn't the part of your post that people are voting about.

Attn: cyclists on 14:03 - Jul 29 by Lesta_Tractor | As a cyclist seeing other cyclists jump red lights really pees me off I know clipping out can be annoying and we all like to smash the occasional strava segment but there really isn't any excuse for it |
The one that’s just been jailed didn’t look like the clipping in/out sort. Having cycled in clubs, I suspect this sort of disregard for road signals is far more prevalent in casual cyclists and commuters. Just a hunch based on club rides I’ve done/seen and the types who try to run me down when I visit the big smoke.

Kinda hard to do that in built up areas where roads tend to be narrower.

It maybe the umpteenth time for you my friend but that was my first reply to Cotty's post. Next time I will remember to wade through several pages of a thread before commenting on the second post in it. Now if everyone did that, then all threads would consist of one op, one comment and one reply. We could all then get on with other things. [Post edited 29 Jul 2021 18:39]
