The whole point is they are not free to do it at all. Red lights apply to them.

Well quite, that applies to everyone.

By freer I simply meant that they have more opportunity to because they don't get stuck behind other traffic.

But you knew that was what I meant.

Your title sort of carpet bombed all cyclists as people who go through red lights and then you labelled them all pricks. Sort of comes across as you’re using this tragic death as a way to push forward your views on cyclists.

Maybe be a tad more diplomatic- If you routinely go through red lights please think again - something like that. Also, some cyclists don’t like criticism - not all, but some are incredibly thin skinned.

I can’t help what you infer. The OP is very clear; stop going through red lights you pricks.

Purely apocryphally on my part I’d say cyclists are much much worse for this behaviour. I’ve seen them do it many times at pedestrian crossings too.

It seems to me that the cyclists that go through red lights will do it at any point in the sequence, whereas the motorist would never do it in the middle of the sequence, only just as they've gone red, expecting the opposite lights to not yet be green.

Upvoting a post about the tragic death of an innocent man caused by a cyclist is even more peculiar, I'd have thought.

Maybe - just maybe - that isn't the part of your post that people are voting about.

It maybe the umpteenth time for you my friend but that was my first reply to Cotty's post.

Next time I will remember to wade through several pages of a thread before commenting on the second post in it.

Now if everyone did that, then all threads would consist of one op, one comment and one reply. We could all then get on with other things.

'wade through several pages"? We're only on page 3!

But yeah, fair point.

It's pretty obvious though, isn't it? Of course you'll see more people doing an illegal thing if they can get away with it, as opposed to those who are restricted in some way. It's not a fair comparison.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Maybe car drivers could consider giving cyclists as much room as a parked vehicle when they pass them too ?!

Yeah you give them enough room for a car and then at the next lights when they catch up, they scoot up the inside of you in your blind spot within 2 centimetres of your car!

Yes. If there were less cameras then there would be more speeding by motorists. If there were no police patrols then there would be more drink driving. That is obvious.

But with cyclists I think there is more to it than it being easier to get away with.

As I say, I cycle quite a bit so I'm not anti cyclist. But I think there is very much a mindset that the rules of the road don't apply to cyclists in the same way as it does motorists. Whether it be ignoring lights or mounting the kerb if it's more convenient.

Maybe it goes back to when we were kids and we all had bikes. We took liberties. Liberties that we simply wouldn't entertain after many driving lessons and taking a test.

Putting my cyclist hat back on (or should that be helmet?) one thing that really pisses me off are pedestrians who are about to cross a road.

A pedestrian can quite easily take one step on to the road, then stop to look left or right and have no fear that they will be hit be a car. But it's a bloody hazard for those of us on a bike who suddenly have to swerve into the way of a car when they do do.

So some drivers are pricks. Some cyclists are pricks. And some pedestrians are also pricks.

As someone who cycles regularly, drives a car ocassionally and a lorry daily through central London I have to say that there is quite a large proportion of cyclists who couldn't give a feck about rules.

There are lots of car drivers who are like that too, I accept that, but what I seem to see with the cyclists is that is spread across all ages, creeds, cultures etc, it seems to be a cultural thing for many whereas you can often spot the guy who's going to be a prick in his car.

As already mentioned, there are loads of bike specific lights in London now, most of the major junctions have them centrally, you'd think actually having there own traffic lights would make them more inclined to pay attention?

As I say, I cycle several times a week so have no beef with cycling on the whole, there is a large subset however who do seem to be 'pricks' and feel the laws don't apply to them.

The last time this topic came up I posted some stats.

The actually amount of prickishness amongst road users is consistently the same irrespective of means of transport, this includes pedestrians.

Which demonstrates that human prickishness is not a factor of travel.

An indication of if someone is a prick could be a person using the death of someone to try and make a point about millions of people. See also racists.

As a cyclist seeing other cyclists jump red lights really pees me off

I know clipping out can be annoying and we all like to smash the occasional strava segment but there really isn't any excuse for it

Agree with all of that. I cycle a lot and never run urban red lights (or rural ones if there are any!). I've seen far too many accidents in Cambridge to do that. Also, wear a helmet and don't use headphones. Ridiculous behaviour.

Headphones when cycling

I wouldn’t, but possibly in defence in some cases there are headphones purposely designed to allow you to hear ambient noise.

Interesting that the perception running through this thread is that cyclists behave worse. Just a little bit of googling for stats on road offences and injuries seems to indicate that’s not the case (hard to find like for like comparison studies though).

"Also, wear a helmet and don't use headphones."

So many of those in London, I've actually given them a name - BHNHFW's
(Big Headphones, No Helmet, Fixie W@nkers)

(This is from a fellow cyclist by the way)

As for the OP, as someone commented elsewhere in this thread..."So some drivers are pricks. Some cyclists are pricks. And some pedestrians are also pricks."

I cycle about 20 miles a day through central London, and the biggest problems I encounter are caused by pedestrians and motorists using their mobile phones; red light jumping is insignificant in comparison.

I agree with everything apart from there being a mindset that the rules of the road don't apply to cyclists in the same way as motorists. I think (and witness) that most cyclists do obey the rules, and certainly do myself.

I think what you've described is a perception with very little evidence (unless you can provide some).

The main reason, IMO, that motorists obey rules like not jumping lights is simply because of the chances of being caught are much greater. It's as simple as that. If you switched things round and had number plates on bikes and not on motorised vehicles you'd have way more motorists than cyclists jumping the lights. Taxi drivers would only stop to pick up and drop off their fares!

As I have previously said, some motorists are pricks, some cyclists are pricks and some pedestrians are pricks.

As a result of the pandemic we have seen thousands of more people taking up cycling. Last summer you couldn't buy a bike for love nor money.

Ergo, with many more cyclists on the road there are there are more pricks out there giving the rest of us a bad name.

Oh and look at me. I only started cycling recently and did 50 miles from Auchinstarry to Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago. I was pretty pleased with myself.

Not sure what any of this has to do with my reply to Tractor Wood. All you need to say is there are lots of pricks out there. It's this constant demonising of cyclists that gets my goat.

Well done on your 50 miles. I cycled to the National Theatre yesterday (only about 8 miles)... and got hit by biblical rain on the way back. Had to ring out everything when I got home, and even emptied water out of my shoes like emptying a glass of water. Felt like I was doing Tough Mudder or something!

Not to mention going through No Entry signs and riding on busy pavements. One last year in Bury came round a corner and only just managed not to pile into my dog. He wouldn't stop and take the lecture I gave him. Wonder why? Deliveroo cyclists are by far the worst round here, during lockdown there were a total menace and I made an official complaint.
