Thankyou for giving me back exciting football 21:44 - Aug 10 with 9891 views | ChateauWines | Thank you all at Gamechanger, Cookie and the players. Despite tonight's result that was most enjoyable game I've seen us play in for years. It's very clear what they are working to achieve. If that's our 2nd XI I'm more than happy

Thankyou for giving me back exciting football on 09:54 - Aug 12 by Dubtractor | Ffs. Joe didn't say it wasn't the most exciting transfer window, he said it wasn't the most exciting thing overall. In the actual post you've just quoted. I feel for Joe at the moment. Since toilet gate he can't say anything without there being a pile on. [Post edited 12 Aug 2021 10:01]

Joe really isn't helping himself with single word posts like, "Embarrassing", is he? It's hardly the most reasoned argument, (and Joe is very capable of reasoned argument), to deliver to a thread, but also incredibly dismissive and lacking any respect what-so-ever for the OP. I'm not sure Joe needs you fighting his battles every two minutes either. That being said, as mentioned, Joe wouldn't be having so many battles if he wasn't being so dismissive of other peoples opinions over the last few months.

Thankyou for giving me back exciting football on 08:48 - Aug 12 by Herbivore | The OP is laughable, imo. Some fans have lost their heads. By all means be hopeful, optimistic even, but creaming your pants over a home defeat to fourth tier Newport's reserve team and a home draw against relegation favourites Morecambe? Yeah, maybe not lads. We're a work in progress, let's see where we are a few games in, but let's not pretend this has been an amazing start to the season. |
This has been the best and most exciting start to a season since Bobby Robson joined us, he also had some poor results but his intent was soon obvious. Back then there were many morons booing and chanting Robson out and I have never listened to doubters since. I love an exciting project and this is exactly what we have got and I will thoroughly enjoy myself and support the manager and owners to the hilt. Loved Tuesdays game.

Thankyou for giving me back exciting football on 10:39 - Aug 12 with 1339 views | Texaco73 | The most pleasing thing for me is that the club structure appears to be getting back on track. When a club is run well it generally follows that the playing staff perform better and the club grows stronger each season. I don't think people need to worry about Cook's performance or struggling against teams that on paper we should easily beat. It is still early days of the season. There will be poor results. I am comforted in that the tools have been/are being provided and a better environment is also being invested in. If Cook doesn't make us competitive at the top end of the divison he won't be around long. Promotion is the only target. The new administration won't take long to bring in someone else I suspect, if things don't progress forward. Now isn't the time to worry or get upset IMO. We've had a long painful demise and we all are a little short on patience after the mugging Evans and co. gave us, but it's going to take a awhile to get the house back in order. I have faith in the new owners to steer the club foward and the team and results will surely get better.

People losing their heads by being excited about the exciting intent of our attacking footy for the first time in a good while coupled with an exciting new ownership is not the same as morons moaning, booing and being generally miserable. The only disappointing thing about our upcoming successes is that the miserable moaners will get to enjoy it too in their own pathetic way just like in the Robson era.

Mate, you literally described our start to the season as the best and most exciting in 50 years. We're in the third tier and have started with a home draw to the relegation favourites and a home loss to a fourth tier side. I don't even know where to start with that. By all means be excited by the project, I think we more or less all are, but let's not pretend it's been a good start let alone our best in 50 years.

“This has been the best and most exciting start to a season since Bobby Robson joined us,” I presume you’re being ironic with this statement aren’t you? Better than all the season in the 70’s and early 80’s? If you do mean it then you really are getting things out of proportion as we’ve drawn one game and lost another to two much smaller clubs than ours! But maybe what you mean is that the build up to the season, the building of a decent looking squad is the most exciting since SBR’s days? Even if you mean that I wouldn’t agree - but then I’m old enough to remember how excited we were as each season and how we expected each one to be the one we won the league or cup - hope with genuine expectation! TWTD. Watching the transformation of support staff and the playing squad being built has been fun and it’s looking good for the future - but no way is it better than anything in the last 50 years. Or maybe I’m just about to be whooooshed!

Thankyou for giving me back exciting football on 09:45 - Aug 12 by Cheltenham_Blue | So what has been the most exiting transfer window in the last 15 years Joe if this one clearly (so vociferously in your opinion), hasn't. What was the most entertaining game in years if Tuesdays wasn't? Its very easy to come in with a single negative comment like, 'embarrassing', unfortunately, it makes you seem more than a little bitter, (again), about the regime change that has happened here to date. [Post edited 12 Aug 2021 9:49]

If looking just at transfer windows, the summer after Keane joined and we went into a Championship season as favourites to go up was bloody exciting - but nothing that happens off the pitch is more exciting than what goes on on it - as we found out then. The most exciting thing to happen to this club in the last 15 years was when we were 2 wins from the PL, that’s a million times more exciting than signing players……there seems to be this rewriting of history by some. It’s mad.

I never said it was better. That period was great in hindsight. This period is a chance to re-gain that standard of footy with a modern day footy structure for the first time since then with Burley and Sheepshanks time almost managing to do it. NOW is the time to get excited again.

Your words were that this is our "best and most exciting" start to a season since Robson's first season in charge. You said that about a start that sees us winless after two home games against much smaller clubs. If you didn't really mean that it's our best and most exciting start since Robson's first season then why did you say it was and what did you actually mean?

Thankyou for giving me back exciting football on 07:56 - Aug 12 by Vic | I always look out for your posts Joe because hustirically you have been more knowledgeable and measured than most posters on here. You live near the ground and it’s obvious that you’ve been to may youth and U23s games. You are hugely invested in the club, more than most of us, and I like that. What’s also clear from your comments on here and on social media is that you also have a decent understanding and appreciation of football - tactics, fitness, skills etc. For all these reasons you deserve respect on here. All that said, personally I’ve been surprised by how cautious you’ve been over the last few months and feel that your criticism comments have on balance outwieghed your hope and optimism. I agree with you on Cooks utter failure last season - I would have liked to have seen him handle things very different. But even then, what was reported about his comments to ALL the players were somewhat wide of the mark (as I thought they probably were). But this squad rebuild is surely in anyone’s book a plus and what we have now on paper is a massive upgrade on the last few years. However, despite your protestions, you’ve comments have tended to be more cautious than positive. The first two results have not been what we want, but that the performances have been better, even from our youth/reserves surely cannot be denied. I agree that there could all end up being a bit Lambertesk and being hot air and false hope, but that’s not really likely given the quality of players, the manger and most importantly the management and ownership above Cook. I just can’t see it being allowed to happen. So yep, let’s be disappointed in the results, but there is, surely, plenty more reasons to be optimistic than cautious. None of this is meant as criticism (football is about opinions!) and not really sure what the point of my post is (!) but just an observation from a moderate watcher of the comments and threads on here. |
This is exactly where I’m at. No, the results haven’t been good enough. We should have beaten Morecambe and the tea lady and car park attendant 11 should have had too much for Newport. The first team is half formed, hasn’t really played together and the club structure is new too so expecting everything to fall into place immediately was hope over expectation. The implementation of structure is the most important part of this in my view because if the club is ‘right’, good things will follow. It’s about building foundations. I’m actually surprised at the progress we’ve made off the field and in player recruitment. I thought it’d take a couple of transfer windows to get as far as we have. The hope now is that they can mould into a team. It will take time but if/when they do we will win a heck of a lot of games. He got a few things wrong but I do not hold Cook accountable for last season. He inherited the most unprofessional, shameful shower to ever represent this club. But this is Cook’s team now. Accountability lies squarely with him. My expectation is improving performances and results. Top two should be the aim. It’s up to him and his players.

I think some people just struggle to understand nuance - so when Joe raises concerns about performances since Cook came in but maintains optimism about the future they struggle to understand and try and paint him into this negative corner. Wonder if there’s also an element of them appreciating that Joe is quite influential, and feeling a bit defensive whenever he says anything even slightly negative, because they desperately want the atmosphere around the club to improve. Understandable but not exactly fair on Joe, who’s just a bloke offering his opinions.

It's tedious innit. I disagree with the bloke on plenty of footy stuff but things are rarely black and white, except the simple truth that things are looking quite positive without the need for gushing praise for drawing to Morecambe and losing to Newport, at home. I'm peeved Cook couldn't accommodate Downes and Dozzers, and to a lesser extent Teddy. However, I understand the clear out, and we look to be building a perfectly decent squad for the plan. We can get promoted and do well over the next few years as well as the lads who've left doing well, and I hope they do. Not mutually exclusive positions. I'm feeling optimistic for once, and think Cook will do well. But a) he hasn't yet and b) we lost to Newport at home ffs :) COYFB
