Not sure what to make of it all really 20:52 - Aug 14 with 6395 viewshype313

Part of me is being a pragmatic with our current situation, with all the changes over the summer and players needing time to gel etc.

But on the flip side, these players we have brought in should be good and able enough to beat Morecambe, Newport and Burton with thier abilities.

Cook's honeymoon period is well and truly over and as yet, we haven't seen anything from him in his time here that suggests he is the man to charge us to promotion, regardless of all the caveats, although I still have some confidence that he can be the man to take us up, but that could just be blind faith.

I dunno, I seem to be contradicting myself here, but I'm really not sure where I stand on the current situation.

Maybe I'll come to a better conclusion after ten games, that's my hope anyway.

Feels like there's a lot of pressure on Tuesday's match already, partly because of our start and partly because of who we're playing. No offence to Cheltenham but, on paper, this would be one of our favoured away games.

My own view is that PC did really poorly last season. I don’t buy into the argument that he had to change the whole team and that the last 14 games should be written off. With his history he should have had us at least challenging for the play-offs; instead, he did worse than Lambert.

The new squad is very good, though, but will need some time to bed in, and PC needs that time to get it working properly. I would genuinely be amazed if we don’t end up top 2.

Whether that means PC is any good, I don’t know. I feel even I could make a decent fist of it this season :-)

The fans should be placing pressure on him. My fear is the excuse making will start — it’ll take a season to turn it round, the club is rotten to the core etc. etc. etc. If we’re still performing in this way after 10 games that’ll be 24 he’ll have had; for me, more than enough to have had some effect, especially considering the support he’s had.

In that case I think we as supporters need to get behind the players from the kick off, we play a part in removing the edginess.

We need to start playing players in their best positions I.e. Fraser and cutting out the individual mistakes.

Defensively our full backs seem to be getting caught out of position on a regular basis, this is a concern.

That’s how they are set up to play - full backs as de facto wingers with the 2 CBs and 2 CMs forming a solid square to deal with everything else. If they are getting caught up there it’s because the ‘square’ is failing

I understand the concept, but having looked at the goals we conceded today it's not working, KVY is out of the picture, our defensive awareness once the free kick is given is non existent and we are chasing shadows, Powell is free as a bird. Credit to Burton looks like they did their homework

First half we didn't cope at all with their press, this is the biggest concern for me, you can't always play out, your full backs cannot be your outlet every time, especially away from home on narrow pitches. Feel sorry for Piggott, he's had very little service into his feet.

Today is another poor result, however score the pen and I fully believe we go on to win the game. Fine lines and individual mistakes costing us again.

Interesting team selection ahead for Tuesday

If it’s tangible progress by seasons end then he’ll be ok, if not then he won’t be here, that’s how it works. As I’ve said before, our fans have been through a lot and during that time we’ve had to watch our neighbours flirt with top flight football with relative ease, it’s no surprise some are disappointed, it’s a bit of an anticlimax, hopefully all will workout, we are starting from zero after all.

This is our most exciting start to a season in 50 years. Shame on you for doubting us.

We'll come good I'm sure, but this has been a less than ideal start.

I think a lot of people on here vastly underestimate what it means by, “needing to gel”. It might be several weeks more yet before this happens given we’re still getting bodies in.

Fair enough, I'm certainly hoping that my concerns are completely unfounded and we are top of the charts in ten games time.

For the avoidance of doubt, my post was tongue in cheek.

I'm a little concerned tbh. I'm sure it will come good, but we're so conditioned to failure here I do wonder...

5 games and no win would not be good. We need to put a few wins on the board while the team is settling in. But I’m sure that Cook and those above him all know that.

Yeah, its a strange one, I feel like I should be on cloud 9 given where we are now compared to a few months ago with Lambert and Evans, yet...

Have to be pragmatic, it's only fair at this point and there is every chance this takes off over the coming weeks. But Cook needs to get his record into credit here fairly quickly if he isn't to feel some serious heat. My sense is that Cook & the new regime is a marriage of convenience that won't take an awful lot to come undone. But if he can find a winning blend in the coming weeks that won't matter a lot. Injuries certainly are not helping.

Totally agree.
Out of interest, how does an international manager like Gareth Southgate managed to "gel" a squad of strangers so quickly? I appreciate they're not complete strangers but nevertheless...

Described it perfectly for me. I really hoped that today I'd see something that would buy me into the what others have seen but it was almost like the first game at Burton I saw under Lambert. I was hoping for something better. I'm still positive that we will be better but today I was so deflated from the game.

Yep, can't really blame you Dan, from what I've seen of the Palace, Millwall, Morecambe and Newport games you can see snippets of what he's trying to achieve, albeit undone by some mistakes, but if I'm being positive then hopefully once he has his fully settled, fit 11 we should start to see some results.

Time isn't on his side though.

Lets hope for a big confidence boosting win on Tuesday to settle the nerves and provide a platform for the coming weeks.

On the plus side, met someone I used to work with and turns out he was a town fan. Talked to him a bunch of times about football and somehow neither of us brought up who we supported so nice to know there are still a few of us around notts.

People are excited by different things I guess. This is the lowest point in more than 50 years, and we're 'running towards adversity'. I just don't know what to make of it.

It really isn’t. The lowest point was the end of February this year after we’d lost 6 of 8 home games with a 40+ squad and Division 2 staring us in the face this season or next. The club was nearly dead under Evans. It’s been rubbish for years and was exactly where it belonged. A mid table League 1 club getting smaller each year and living a lie in its decaying stadium. Evidence? Former and current coaches and players views. First hand accounts.

The takeover has given us a lifeline. They’ve said there would be ups and downs and that was obvious to anyone with a brain cell. Whether Cook is gone by October, as so many hope he is and have done so since the Gillingham game, is actually irrelevant.

The club will improve if the owners are good to their word.

It's because the on-pitch results haven't been good enough since Gamechanger arrived. All that excitement off the pitch in March/April and yet we have to break off from it to consider 6 games without a goal and 0-3 defeats at Northampton and Wimbledon.
We come into the opening week of this season and really ought to have beaten 1 of Morecambe, Newport and Burton, but didn't manage to beat any of them. We've been here before at the starts of new eras....And they never improved in the style of a Bkackpool, they just subsided into dreariness. To watch Scott Fraser's appalling attempt at a penalty today was to be confronted by the fear that we now have yet another group of players who soil themselves at the prospect of winning matches.

You’re right about being conditioned to failure, the damage that’s been done to our club over the last 13 years runs deep and will take some time to correct.
