This place has been infested with people's hot takes this last week or so... 19:57 - Aug 16 with 5701 views | BlueBadger | ...so it's cards on the table time. Let's get them all out RIGHT NOW in a health y fashion that won't at all devolve into a massive argument. What are your own personal, favourite hot take* on ITFC? I'm going to lead off with : 1. If Mick McCarthy had bought Donacien, Nolan and Nsiala, you'd have recognised how rubbish they are ages ago 2. If we carry on not wining games does that mean that our appalling form last season wasn't actually the players' fault? 3. Lambert did more damage than Hurst did, it's just that everyone blames Evans. Using this definition of 'hot take' here: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hot%20take 'a quickly produced, strongly worded, and often deliberately provocative or sensational opinion or reaction (as in response to current news)' [Post edited 16 Aug 2021 20:01]

Both wanted to leave and do he didn’t let them go - the real failure, as you mentioned was the recruitment which replaced them. |
This. ...and Garner played the old 'moving for personal reasons' card.

This place has been infested with people's hot takes this last week or so... on 21:13 - Aug 16 by clive_baker | Less my 'hot take' to be honest, and just playing devils advocate with more of a contrarian one because I'm bored, but has Cook been given too much of a free pass from Town fans? When he joined the club almost 6 months ago we were sat in 7th place with 16 games left. We were just 2 points off Pompey in 5th, and we had a game in hand. Furthermore, according to many, we also had an 'easier' run in. We had averaged 1.67 points per game from our 30 games pre Cook, yet managed just 1.19 with him. Rather, had we continued to average the relatively unspectacular PPG we had for the first 30 games, we would've finished 6th. So many on here seemed to view Cook's 16 games last season as a 'free hit', which surprised me then and does now. I really would've expected to see a reaction, a bounce, and a proper stab at getting into the playoffs, but we only saw an early acceptance of failure and a regression from an already very low base. The general consensus throughout the season was that the squad was strong, and Lambert had under achieved with them. If that was true of Lambert, why wasn't it true of Cook. Almost overnight, and a 'too unfit to train' later, the party line shifted to that of the players were dog sh1t, and Cook was the messiah. Now that's no defence of Lambert by any stretch, the bloke was a disaster. But if it was true of Lambert, why didn't we see the improvement we would've expected? Since, Cook has resided over pulling the squad apart because they were crap, yet we've seen 4 move on to Championship clubs, a further 5 that finished the season here find homes at fellow League 1 sides, and 5 or 6 have represented us again in our 2 league games this season. A touch surprising of 14/15 players that weren't good enough? Still, at least the football is better... |
It’s a fair point. The end of last season was, frankly, a disgrace. Cook got a free hit for that. Lambert got a free hit for relegation. Reflects the circus-style no-accountability “leadership” we’ve had at this godforsaken club for so long. Hopefully those behind the new era will be a bit more demanding.

So the majority of those players moved sideways or lower doesn’t really suggest the squad was one of the strongest in the league though does it? Let’s not pretend that Cornell is a Championship keeper either, he’ll be spending most of his time on the bench playing the odd cup game for The Posh. [Post edited 16 Aug 2021 22:27]

Either that or the new delusion KVY is no longer our best RB. |
I like the way you’ve included 7 players in that number (Tyreece Simpson, Zak & Kai Brown, Tristan Nydam, Cole Skuse, Allan Vidal and Harry Wright) who made a combined 6 league appearances to get to really big number

Hasn’t it always been so at Ipswich? We don’t tend to get too passionate and vocal about things. Was re-watching the blue Monday interview with pablo earlier and he was shocked at how well the fans accepted relegation from the premiership, fans saying oh well we’ll be back next season. That didn’t play out too well! Suspect the new ownership won’t be quiet so forgiving.

If winning ways and 4 points aren't in the bag within the first 2 league games of the season, the fans on that club's forum who state in August that they are very unhappy and very worried about whether promotion can be achieved in 9 months' & 44 games' time are not only right, but showing great intelligence in their analysis.

So it's yet another manager's fault that the previous squad didn't deliver. When we take your opinion from your post plus some peoples stance there is one big common denominator as none on you question the players and their attitude. It's just the manager's fault..... time and time again ! That squad which Cook has ripped apart was the worst one in the clubs history. Both in terms of playing and attitude. That bunch of sh1thouses had got us relegated without a fight (they got clapped and cheered by SBR) and had two gloomy seasons in League One. But you and some other people still don't question them. All their cliches and soundbites in the interviews which some people had easily been lapping up and what? They had been embarrassing us on the pitch. All started with alleged Hurst's bad way of treating them. The players wanted him to be sacked, they asked Evans to act and they got their wish. Why couldn't they start performing and fighting for the shirt after Hurst's departure then? So Hurst was a disgrace, Lambert was a disgrace and Cook is criticised by some for having failed to deliver with that hopeless mob last season. The players still being indulged by some. But they had been the biggest problem for this club in the last few years no matter how awful Hurst and Lambert were. [Post edited 16 Aug 2021 23:46]

Yes, I don't think anyone disagrees with that. I think the point being made originally was that that was an erroneous analysis that was overly generous to Cook. It is pretty unanswerable, it seems to me, that if Cook had got the same PPG as Lambert, we would've been in the playoffs. He didn't just preside over a slight decline, our results fell off a cliff.

This place has been infested with people's hot takes this last week or so... on 20:45 - Aug 16 by Chrisd | I really find it bizarre how some think PC is a hopeless manager, look at his managerial track record. Suddenly, after managing a few games last season with players that weren’t his own, that had downed tools he is deemed a poor manager. Judge him on this season and most certainly give him the first 10 league games with his own players. I appreciate it’s all about opinions, but is PC a better manager than PH? Yes. Is PC a better manager than PL? Yes. Has PC got better quality throughout his squad than recent seasons at Town? Yes. When he does turn it round, then I just hope those that have doubted his managerial credentials will do the decent thing and put their hands up and say they got it wrong, instead of looking for any negative results or performances to justify their flimsy argument. If I get it wrong and PC isn’t able to work the oracle, I’ll hold my hands up and admit you called it right! On the note of ME, what recent months have shown for all his financial help in keeping us afloat each season he’d pretty much let the club deteriorate and we were in a hole. I’m thankful he’s found owners that want to drive the club forwards otherwise, I could see us slipping another few places towards L2 this season. We just weren’t going in the right direction under ME, you could see he seemed content in letting things drift and that’s a frightening thought. [Post edited 16 Aug 2021 20:50]

The squad Lambert inherited was much weaker than the squad McCarthy inherited. On top of this, while McCarthy did a very good job turning the 12/13 season around, the players already at the club had more than enough talent to stay up anyway, just needed someone to give them a kick up the arrse. With attacking options of DJ Campbell, Michael Chopra, JET and Daryl Murphy, alongside solid defenders Luke Chambers, Tommy Smith and Aaron Cresswell, there was certainly already a lot of Championship quality. That's not to say McCarthy didn't do a very good job, but it wasn't quite as unbelievable and miraculous as I've seen many describe it as. Cristophe Berra was never more than a pretty decent Championship defender and by the end was more of a liabilty due to his inability to complete even the simplest of passes. Mings was better than Cresswell at everything except crossing. Also, I genuinely think Knudsen would have been a really good Championship centre half, good in the air, bit of pace, tough, maybe not the best with the ball at feet but could be masked with a Wolf or a Webster next to him. Cole Skuse shouldn't be described as a defensive midfielder, and only does so because he sat really deep and never contributed to attacks. It's not like he won many defensive aerial duels or put in loads of tackles like a Hyam or a Downes. [Post edited 17 Aug 2021 9:40]

Yep best post I've seen on here. Look back at some of the games we won at the beginning of last year and the way we scored goals. In some of them we tore teams apart. Better quality than what I have seen so far this season. Our midfield who everybody gave so much stick to has gone up a league for good money. Our defence last year was actually solid at the end of the season we just couldn't score goals. We have brought some decent players but most of them are players that are out of favour or surplus to requirement in the clubs they have come from. The players did need to go who left but not entirely sure it was all their fault. Not entirely sure what Cooks tactics are defensively.
