https://dataviz.theanalyst.com/season-reviews/2021/?competition_id=11&season

Defensively
In open play we are the meanest defence in the league - only 4.4 xG conceded this season. Means we have come up against some good finishing and bad goalkeeping, from set pieces we are 18th in the league - 2.9 xG against

Attack
Open Play - 13th best attack in the league
Set pieces - 19th best attack in the league

For all the promising attacking football we seem to see, we really do not create anything like enough good chances - final ball lacking?

Set pieces have to improve at both ends as well

Funny how perceptions can colour things innit. I agree and say we look very good going forwards at time this season. That's probably because we've been so abject over the last few seasons (probably since Waggy left) so anything would be an improvement, plus we've scored some lovely goals. Yet we obviously need to do a bit more if we're serious about challenging.

The games I've seen in their entirety (Morecambe, Bolton, Cheltenham, West Ham yoot dem) we've not created all that much in terms of clear cut chances. It's definitely an area we need to improve on.

All of which fits the perception of us being somewhat disjointed as a team, isolated good passages of play might be nice to watch but they don't, in themselves, win enough football matches.

That we are so poor from set pieces at both ends of the pitch is clearly an organisational failing and one that, yet again, points directly towards the inexperience of the first team coaching set up.

i thought in the 1st half on Saturday we got into some really good areas and our final ball let us down massively.

2nd half not so much.

Imagine being the kind of person who doesn't understand stats. You'd probably be the sort of tragic loser who pay over a tenner for a pint at Wembley and claims that they did The Sex so much they needed fortnightly AIDS tests.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Was looking at that yesterday and interesting to see that we are 'unlucky' in the regard that despite conceding the 2nd fewest shots and having the best xG against a lot is still going in which you'd naturally expect to start leveling out at some point.

Also shows we're the slowest attacking team in the division which isn't necessarily bad (MK Dons and Wigan just behind) but combine it with the eye test and it shows as a team we're not in a place yet where we are fully confident in what we are doing - Saturday we were more cautious overall but clear at times passes were being made too late or not at all when a good option was on. What the above tells us is basically we allow teams too much of an opportunity to do something about it by the time we start putting the ball in their box. Browsing through the player stats on there suggests Edwards back in would help us out on that front.

Our amount of high turnovers is also the lowest in the division which again is not necessarily a problem but shows we're probably not as aggressive as Cook would like, and certainly are not pressing as well as a team as he would like either. That we're ranked high in what they call 'direct attacks' shows we move the ball forwards but everything above suggests it's not with enough purpose or enough speed to really trouble the opposition.

Think Experimental361's xG table a couple of weeks ago had us lower mid-table which feels about right (possibly slightly higher now) - unfortunate to have conceded as many as we have but too blunt in attack to properly make up for it.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

I seem to recall us struggling with set pieces back end of last season as well. It's not a new issue.

Figures there also suggest our approach play still isn't remotely quick enough.

There has been quite a bit of Lambert ball at times this season. And most of our chances and goals have been through individual moments of quality for the most part (as was also often the case under Lambert). It would do everyone the world of good for us to string some wins and cohesive performances together quickly.

Defensively, I agree to a certain extent, but it is also players responsibility when they cross the white line to do their own jobs too. The coaching staff can't head the ball away or mark designated players for them. In the attacking sense of our set pieces, it doesn't necessary mean it's down to organisation if the delivery isn't clearing the first man on the near post which is something we have consistently done in recent seasons. I'd like to see the stats on that from our corners this season. Generally, we should be doing better both ends on the pitch with our set pieces though, that I do agree with.

That was particularly notable after the flurry of set piece goals we scored when Gill stepped up to take a more involved role.

Although we had a problem scoring goals at all for most of that period. Even more so once Judge dropped out of the team.

I don't know what "Expected Goals" would have been in isolation for that second half, but until Santa turned up I'd given up expecting anything.

He's very much our main source of threat. Set up the equaliser at the weekend and our best other chance came through him getting in one on one. Hard to remember many other players having much in the way of chances, it's mainly been Bonne.

I'm not sure 'clinical' is the right word. Although he has looked a very good singing for us, look at the chances he's missed and very good chances at that. You could argue he should have a about 10 goals by now.

Piggott was meant to be our main goal threat to this season I believe.

He's absolutely been clinical - he's got 0.93 goals per 90 off an xG of 0.76 per 90 and scored every other shot on target he's had. He should have put away the two sitters but apart from that he's been excellent to the degree it should tail off which is why we need to get the whole attack firing better.

Really? I'd say that he's being about as clinical as you're going to get for this level. He could have had more but I don't expect a striker at this level to be putting away every single chance they get.
