Because she has never done anything useful in her short life. If she gets the worst culprits to do something about the issues she drones on about, I may take her a little more seriously.

I would say inspiring a generation of her peers and empowering to believe change isn't folley is a huge achievement.

We were taught about climate change and ecological impact in school about 20 years ago, and it felt niche, taboo, futile. Here she is making it feel mainstream and realistic - the fact she has Daily Mail readers scared and in some case calling her a terrorist in comments is a sign that change resistors are scared. Reaching for their old friends 'smear and propagander'.

Changing the way a generation thinks is something that can take generations, I would say what she's done in her short life is pretty stacked.

Sure, China and India are a worry based on sheer numbers of people, but everyone's got a roll to play. Nobody can take the moral high ground until their own house is in order and all that.

Germany is a real disappointment in that ranking, particularly with their Greens having some presence within their PR-based system. Am I right in thinking that is largely to do with construction? Would it be too simplistic to use that as an example that whilst efficiency is good, there is no such thing as sustainable development? Probably.

Do you honestly think what we do will make that much difference when the main contributors to the issue don’t give a s**t?

Whilst they don’t take it seriously, there is no point me even worrying about it, as my actions or even the whole country taking action won’t make a noticeable amount of difference.

I will still wish you good luck in your challenge to go “green”

This is an unbelievably simplistic view which I can only imagine you've sourced from Twitbook or your climate scientist friends down the pub.

Just because another country might be emitted more than us, it doesn't mean we shouldn't be doing everything we can to help in with the overall climate goals. If we want places like China and India to make changes we need to be speaking from a position where we are or have made those changes.

A few more tidbits for you:

- It's highly likely the computer you've been using to type your angry responses was manufactured in China (or at least many of the components) so without countries like the UK outsourcing their manufacturing emissions to places like China our footprint would be much higher.

- You are framing all emissions in a contemporary context, if we look at historic emissions then the US and EU have far more emissions than China or India since 1751. We have caused far more of this issue historically without even factoring in the outsourcing of manufacturing so of course we should take the lead in trying to sort it out.

- China simply has a lot of people. They need to move away from coal ASAP but it's worth noting they are by far the worlds biggest generator of renewable energy, generating more than 3 times the amount of the USA in second place.

https://www.irena.org/Statistics/View-Data-by-Topic/Capacity-and-Generation/Coun

So in summary, yes China should be doing more and we should continue to apply pressure to ensure that happens but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be progressing in our own duties to transition to a carbon neutral status.

I decided to be more direct with my posting since returning and to be honest I find your posts in this thread both ill-informed and utterly depressing. I don't want this place to be like Twitbook but with the level of reasoning and analysis that your showing that's unfortunately how it feels.

Greta Thunberg speaks extremely well, and no other person has done so much to highlight the issue of climate change.

That she has achieved so much at such a young age is quite remarkable. And you are right to highlight her remarkable achievements.

But why do the majority of your posts involve either putting down this country or the people of this country?

It's because they still have a lot of coal power — they've preferred to keep that going while turning off nuclear power stations (nuclear's share of energy generation has dropped from around 25% to 10% in the last decade).

The potential new government (which the Greens will be in) has some good ambitions though — one thing apparently agreed on already is to set aside 2% of land for onshore wind farms and to put solar on every roof that's suitable.

Thanks for that. I'm one of the Lovelockian 'nuclear as a necessary least bad option' greens, but it's a hard sell!

Something is needed for baseline power and if you don't have good sources of hydro or tidal power then nuclear is pretty much the least worse option out of the others specifically with regards to climate issues.

It was madness that we didn't build the Severn Barrage to take care of our baseline power needs in my opinion.

It was the Greens - and if I have one issue with them, it's their historical resistance to Nuclear power. I know renewables are best of all, but having a chunk of power from Nuclear does seem to be a part of why France has lower emissions.

Throw in the need/desire for us all to drive electric, we are going to need a load more electricity than we currently supply. Nuclear for me does seem to be a sensible part of the answer.

That is a very good point.

Why would civilisation not use those efficiency gains to drive growth higher and higher?

If you had a system of fixed size then efficiency savings would make a big difference but sustainable development is just another way of saying growth. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) recently came out with this projection;

All our new renewables just become additive to the existing energy mix and the fossil fuel mix continues to grow just at a slow rate to renewables. The strategy to decarbonise has to be thought through properly otherwise we could make the situation even worse.

Partly due to a reliance still on coal for electricity, by the looks of it - https://www.cleanenergywire.org/dossiers/energy-transition-and-climate-change

They make an interesting case study.

And yes good point on development (growth) - this is the things that George Monbiot keeps talking about. Green Growth is a misnomer. and we need to rein in consumption. But then that obviously has huge implications when people want to become richer and have more toys and gadgets.

Have you seen the state of this country, Glassers?

I have. And it’s a wonderful country full of wonderful people.

I don’t judge a country or it’s people by it’s political leaders. Or the actions of its governments. If I did then I’d believe that most Russians, Chinese, Syrians, Iranians, Israelis etc were scum.

I haven’t mentioned this on here before but my wife and I donate to and help out at a food bank in Glasgow every Tuesday night. We work with fantastic, caring and dedicated people. The folks who use the food bank are wonderful and diverse. Homeless, addicts, or everyday people who have just hit hard times. Great people.

I know refugees who have escaped war and persecution. Who risk their lives and those of their families in order to seek refuge in this great country of ours, they choose this country above other western counties. I know people who dedicate themselves to finding homes, jobs and schools for refugees. These people are British.

I’ve spent far to much time visiting hospitals over the past couple of years that I couldn’t fail to notice the brilliant doctors, nurses, porters, canteen staff who give so much for scant reward.

I hate seeing others knock the people of this country. When they do so they are knocking you Herbie. They are knock your family. Your friends.

Noggin could have quite easily praised whet Greta had to say and the eloquent way in which she put it. Was there really any need to take yet another pop at the British/English people?

Yes, there are many great people and communities around the UK.

But systemically we are a fecking embarrassment with politicians and media that aren’t fit for purpose and an establishment that prioritises (its own) wealth over the greater good.

Supporting that status quo is the definition of knocking this country.

Should also make the point in response to Glasser's, fair, points that just because we compare well with many other states does not mean that we could not do better and are not doing enough to bring about the changes that are necessary.
